Radical Christians lead by Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Center in FL think it is a great idea to mark the 9th anniversary of 9/11 by burning multiple copies of the Quran.

Quoted from a commenter:

"Burning of any Book - is a sign of Ignorance! Do we as a country want to go down the route of the Nazis who burn books in the second world war? Many people maybe opposed to this, but to remain silent is to be complicit to this act"

I can't believe anyone would think that this is a good idea. I couldn't believe that this was real when I first heard about it. It's shameful. :(

This is disgusting. :/

It's fucking gross. White people piss me the shit off sometimes. Muslims have been portrayed in the worse way possible since 9/11, the media is partly to blame for this I feel. In such a media saturated world they need to be more fucking responsible for what they say. Bird flu, swine flu, killer bees and every crime is from black people anyone?

It is an ill-considered, totally unnecessary provocation.

But, regrettably, we must support their right to do it.

What the fuck is wrong with these people?! Burn a copy of the Quran?!

I'm completely dumbfounded by the sheer idiocy of this fucker. It's clear he wants to make things worse! Shouldn't someone stop this guy?! I'm fairly sure Nazi shit like this is not covered by Freedom of Speech.

How about we burn him?

/shrug

I don't find this any more offensive than any other book burning, flag burning, effigy burning, or any form of emphatic politicized incineration you care to name.

This shit goes on every day, when you get right down to it. It's annoying, it's provocative, and it doesn't solve a damn thing, but this is the price we pay for living in a free society.

Something should be done at the very least. This is inciting a war intentionally, the people who seriously plan to do this should be put hit by a raid and then put trial for inciting a war.

In the grand scheme of bold political statements, a book-burning falls pretty far down on the list.

Much further down than, say, flying a few airliners in a few buildings and killing thousands of people, which one actually could argue was an act worthy of inciting a war.

Which it did.

Burning a book? That barely even warrants inciting harsh language.

Considering that any religious extremist will look for any reason to go to war, I'd say this is going to be a huge problem for everyone.

...

At what point did you get the mistaken impression that the aforementioned religious extremists are not already war with us?

Ok, I put that the wrong way. What I meant to say is this is just going to make things much much worse. My mistake.

To elaborate further on my opposition to Gerry's position:

What you're arguing here is analogous to the position that women who dress provocatively are inciting men to rape them. That African-Americans who drive nice cars are inciting racist cops to pull them over.

I can go on listing similar examples, but I think you get the point.

You can decry the act itself, yes, but if a blatantly disproportionate response ensues at the instigation of a third party, you cannot lay blame on the party who committed the arguably offensive act.

Why all the fuss? I'm sure there are Muslims out there burning things with the same intent as this guy.

Pretty much every damn day, if the news is any indication. And I'm sure that there has been at least the occasional Quran burning prior to this, just less publicized.

Nothing changes the fact that it is still wrong. I, as an American and human being, am disgusted and embarrassed by this. Just because it happens, it does not make it right. To say, "oh well, it happens all over anyways" is not good enough for me or justification for the thousands of people who are protesting this event.

do you also protest all the burning that pretty much everyone does? or is it only this thing that an American happens to be doing?

There's a reason why Florida has it's own Fark tag. Jus' sayin'.

I should clarify: They're free to do this. It's their right and they have to suffer the consequence. Lets just hope that this doesn't lead to more acts of terrorism by certain Islamic groups that are based out of the United States. For those of you that don't know what I'm talking about the one that threatened Matt and Trey the creators of South Park over them planning to show an image of Muhammad.
