Wouldn't Flare II as the new best light burst make people want to trade in their thunder merits? I mean, the whole reason people pretended 4 of the 6 elements didn't exist was to get a few more damage on the formerly top two. If all that matters to blms is bursting dark and light and getting the biggest number, thunder merits are no longer the way to go. Mob weakness hasn't mattered since potency merits came around anyway, since noone pretends every single mob is weak to thunder and ice - it's all about damage, and now fire is the top of the line.
Assuming that there's actually a difference in base strength of the different AM2s? Flare was the strongest AM because it was lvl 60 and others were seperated by gaps of 2. I'd guess all the different AM2 are base the same, and then you have to question which 2(assuming you want the ability to burst both light and dark).
Well, Ice is a no brainer for darkness, it have the natural 10 elemental and 5 int off the staff. Of the darkness elements, ice is the one mobs are most frequently weak to, especially stuff you would merit on.
Next, thunder, well this is a bit more tricky. Well there's wind, fire and thunder to pick from.
Well wind and lightning are at a glance the same, because they share the same lvl 2 skillchain while fire falls behind as a less used chain paired with light. So you have to ask yourself what's the different between wind and lightning? Well I'd say more often than not things are weak to thunder, and many HNM as well seem to be more weak to thunder than they are wind. Moreover, the kinds of mobs that are weak to thunder(like crabs for example), have a tendency to be more weak to BLM in general. So it is more effecient to capitalize on the elements we already excel in.
To top it all off, these AM2 all have long spell cast timers, meaning while they certainly do change blm, they don't now define BLM, we'll still need to cast the lvl 4 nukes to keep up damage, in which case we'll want to fall back on the classic blizz 4, thunder 4.
