I'm just wondering if I have to do Campaign battles in certain areas (Windurst, San d'Oria, Bastok) in order to get the items there or if I can get a high rank in one and spend points on gear in anouther without doing anything.

last update allow you to do the latter option. You just will pay more for the items not of your home nation.

If you're from one nation and want another's item, you have to pay extra, looks like a 50% increase in AN price. However, if you're not too far into one nation's storyline and don't mind switching to another nation, you can do a quick 10 min quest to change nations. The bonus to this is you can KEEP your current rank and AN (latter may be a glitch, but I am not telling SE). This allows you to get items from another nation at the same price they pay. The only downside to this is once you switch back to your original nation, should you decide to, you lose two ranks, but it's a small price to pay when you could end up saving a vast amount of time farming AN.

Has nothing to do with storyline. You can do all 3 country's story while staying 1 nation.
