You guys ever thought about installing a chatbox? Only takes a few minutes.

I think I would be opposed to something like this. An unmoderated, cluttered box of text would make this site most unappealing. The IRC channels have failed, the ventrilo channel has failed, so I don't see how this would be different. I have never seen a chatbox implemented well.

IRC = MIRC? i used to live on that when i was in highschool, oldschool chatting 4tw
 
If left un moderated it can get pretty out of hand....like Kelyon said about flamebaiting and what not to just starting a flame in general...
 
The problem with a chatbox is that it can't be moderated. Text moves fast enough to the point that if someone is flamebaiting someone, by the time it got reported and/or brought to the attention of the mods, it would be long gone. All it does is leave a big open space for people to go unchecked.
 
Chat box only shows 5 "posts" at once right? if thats the case then yeah it would probably be a bit hard to check it unless you could see the history

That chatbox is the easiest thing in the world to install. No file edits, nothing. Just import. Works great too, and my users love it. The only thing I don't like about it is a) Cyb gives zero support for it and b) you can see people's text even if they're on ignore (which I've been trying to bug Cyb about)....

You'll actually see Pakomen trying to get some answers in that thread lol.

It actually can be moderated, and you can ban people from using it.

The way I see it, if you can ban anyone from anything, I'm good to go. :D

Also, it doesn't have to show on every single page. You can have it only on the default three columner if you want and even default it minimized. Hell, you can hide it in a thread, probably.

I'm just saying. My members love it. It doesn't get abused very often at all. It was the best addition I made to the forum I run, and I was very skeptical about it as well. I sat on it for a few months because I didn't want to install anything that would take away from threads. It ended up keeping members on the board longer, which boosted activity, which boosted membership.

It has a history (archive) and you can view hundreds of lines at a time if you want.

I think it'd be neat to try out. If it turns into anarchy after a couple of months, mods can always disable it.

I'm going to keep this in mind! We have a couple of things that do need immediate attention, but it would be good to get this discussion going again. :)
 
After I installed it on my board, things blew up, in a good way. It's basically a lounge, and flashchat and others just can't do it for ya. Let me know if you want the exact one I'm using.

Only problem is it's a bit server heavy, but it should be ok. You can always replace it with one that's not so ajaxy later if you'd like.
