Alright this is a tired old argument and there really is no point in bringing it up but something kind of bugged me last night.

I'm in Whitegate just doing nothing and I see the player Serio, now I remember about a year ago I checked this guy randomly just for fucks sake and didn't think anything about it. About 5 minutes later I get a tell telling me not to check him and I was a bit baffled he waited so long to respond. I just shrugged it off and went on my way.

Last night however I see he's LFP on his Samurai and start to remember the previous encounter with him so I go ahead and press my luck thinking "It's been a year, he's looking for a party, and he's have to realized there's a filter by now if it really bothers him." So I do the old check and he switches armor and proceeds to tell me "{/check}{No Thanks.}{Leave}."

Is this still a big problem for the few of them? I mean I may be a fat stupid smelly American but do some of them lack common sense? There's been a god damn option to not have to deal with this for awhile now and for some retarded reason they choose to still act like complete dicks.

I realize this is pretty pointless arguing over but I just had to bring it up. Also I'm curious to know if any one has a clue if it's been justified that these guys don't have to filter out this shit.

lol i check him everytime i see him just to piss him off

Some people just don't like being checked for some reason, I don't know why. A couple months ago I had checked someone and they yelled at me for it. I told them they could turn their filter on if they have a problem with it and they threatend to call a GM. Some people are just insecure I suppose.

I'm just going to say that some people will respond even if they don't like being checked.

Nothing will change their minds on that sort of stuff. We can debate, argue and cut each other's throats out but in the end, if they don't change their minds on the subject, they will keep on saying {/check}{No thanks.}{Leave.}

On one hand, they may be biased against American or Canadian or heck Europeans. On the other hand, they prolly just don't like being /checked by anyone without some form of consent.

I like to see peoples reactions when I spam /em examines you. in Jeuno/Whitegate :D

If they're wearing gear, expect to be checked...

If your not wearing gear, expect to be checked...

If your bazaar thing is up, expect to be checked...

If your party flag is up, expect to be checked...

Need I say more? Humans are curious by nature, so /check is just one of those curiousity things.

Yeah, there is another player that goes all crazy when you examine them also. Raizondetre once had a bazzar up, and I checked them and they switched gear before I could get to their Bazzar, so I checked them again thinking maybe that they were just changing gear at that moment. Checked again, changed again. Did this about 10 times and never got to their bazzar. Then they went all emo in /tell and I told them to GM me if they cared so much. I don't check them anymore, but for awhile there I did it just to bug them. Why put a bazzar up if you don't want to get checked?

Yea Raizondetre is in my dynamis LS .. he tried to get me kicked out of it for checking him. When the leader told him no he checked me 163 times (yes i got curious after 20 and went back and counted) during one dynamis windy. I lol'd hard that morning.

Same guy is also extremely racist.. everytime i show up for dynamis he sends me tells {english} {leave}

Go check Gais...Think that was his name. Funny stuff.

Yeah, I got the hint that he was super racist too. He was making connotations to the fact that I speak English. More power to him, but I'm never going to invite him to a party, ever.

i wont either but i like going with that dynamis shell so i put up with him... also he was fairly pissed when i outlotted him on bard legs maybe 3-4 months ago and then this week he was the number 2 lotter on the 100c i won >.>

Filters {Do you need it?}
They consider it inappropriate to check someone without asking. It a culture difference and that is why they do not put filters on. They consider it a evasion of privacy. They did the same thing on everquest. The reason it seem that most these people are racist is because most of them are, because they think outsides are pigs and have no manors, because of reasons like these.

I got to agree. Its pretty silly for anyone to get prissy by getting your gear checked. I'd say just take it as a compliment.

It doesn't matter what your ethnic background is, or who you are.
Never lose touch that FFXI is a videogame, and gamers will do things like compare gear and stats.

I'm sure at some time we've all had people who checked us in the past, sent us a /tell to say "wow; nice gear", and then 1 month later they have it.
For that split second, you were just admired. :-D (lol)

We may all have different motives in this game, but a lot of gamers that look to be proactive like the idea of becoming stronger, and having fun while trying to meet their goals. Of these players, they may check you to see what other things they can look forward to getting in the game. :-)

Dude you have no idea, in the comprehension of cultures. First off, its not because they think americans are racist pigs(Its because alot of PEOPLE in general do not like getting checked by random people)

Secondly it just so happens that JPN do it more because idiots like you check them 40-50 times in a row

Its not because of racism... And you cant say that i dont know.

lol I love this debate.

If you guys had to say which you thought was more culturally insensitive, would you say it was the people who assume every other culture that produces ffxi players knows they'll take offense on having a CHARACTER in a VIDEO GAME examined, or the players that are doing the checking?

Personally, I'd say it was former group, but hey . . . what do I know? I'm just another hairy gaijin.

I'm still of the opinion that if it's really that big an issue, they should petition SE to make them an icon that's instantly recognizable as a Japanese player. If they'll do that, I'll more than happily stop checking any player who displays it.

After all, do you adopt Asian customs and social mores with every Asian you encounter in a Western culture, or do you only do so after establishing that they're actually part of that culture, or "when in Rome," so to speak?

Holy shit, I actually agree with hellstorm for once? Wow.
Well, sort of at least. With things like differences in culture, you can't just say "LOL 2 BAD 4 U" just because you feel differently. In some cases it's an overreaction on both sides, but if someone asks you to stop doing something, and you do it more out of spite... yeah, you're being a dick. Things like spam /check on someone who asks you not to... that sort of thing certainly never helped relations.

Oh, and demanding that they make a change for you is no different than them asking you to change a habit as well. Except a vast majority of people say no and then spit in their faces.
