Rio is where it should be, only surprise was that Chicago got booted out of the first round. The economic benefit to Chicago would have been iffy at best actually. They likely woulda turned a small profit as a whole, but the big deal is that it is one enormous commercial for the United States that the whole world is watching. And yea, it would have been retarded of Obama not to go. A short visit to Europe to promote the long term interests of the U.S. is hardly a waste of time for a President.

Oh and on a side note, there is absolutely zero guarantee the Olympics would even turn a profit. All of you posting that the Olympics would of been this huge economic boost are just naive. Maybe in Rio they'll turn a profit because they can hire labor there to construct and run it for pennies on the dollar but in Chicago??? Chicago??? A place where they're currently running an annual deficient in the hundreds of millions, a place with a tremendous crime rate, where they DEPEND on the government cheese to stay afloat, a place where they're getting ready to lay off thousands of state and local employees, where corruption runs rampant????? You want to have the Olympics there????

Now don't get me wrong you could swap out the word Chicago for Rio in the above tirade and it would be 100% true as well, but like I said, if you factor in dirt cheap labor Rio might actually turn a profit.

Seriously though... Tomas is right about some things even when he does come across as a ranting maniac most of the time. We're paying for so many upgrades for the 2010 Olympics when the money could be better spent elsewhere, education, health, you name it. I highly doubt we will get back what we put in and (seeing as how I work right downtown and have to take the skytrain to work everyday) transportation is going to be a fucking joke.

They already said that every 9 minutes, one of our busier intersections will have 15,000 people cross it. Try getting to work when, even on the non-busier days I have to wait 4-5 skytrains to get one that isn't filled like a sardine can. Keep in mind we also have the "swine-flu" to worry about with people from all over the world coming here.

And most countries end up being in debt to host the Olympics. It's a symbol of national pride much more so than it is a moneymaker. No single country in Africa could host the 2010 World Cup, so they had to divide the games between the entire continent. You think any of those countries really have the excess funds to build facilities? Nope.

Silly reasoning to some, but it is a morale booster for sure, important when your leadership may depend on the people liking you. I could explain further, but I think that suffices.

I'm more of a fan of the right but even I feel bad about loosing the bid for the Olympics. Hali already mentioned the jobs, but the country who host the Olympics get a huge chunk of change and we all know how helpful that would be for our country right now.

Obama did well to try and help, I don't think he did it all because of Chicago. I bet he'd have done it for any city in the U.S. to get the bid considering the importance of its revenue. As a whole the state of Illinois is broke. It has over a 10 billion dollar deficit. Chicago is in the same situation. The city has no money. It would create temporary jobs on constructing some of the facilities to host events that wouldn't be able to be done in either Soldier Field or the Chicago Fire's stadium.
