I have a question about Chocobo genetics, when it comes to breeds/color.

As per the History of Chocobos info release by SE a while back, they explain how there are 5 different breeds of Chocobos.

ChocoboRaising3.jpg

In a nutshell, the basic traits of each breed are:

Destrier - Strong, and Black
Courser - Fast, and Red
Palfrey - Mid-sized and Blue
Jennet - Small and Green
Rounsey - Average and Yellow

Considering the vast majority of eggs seem to hatch yellow chocobo's (adult yellow, not just chick yellow) it leads me to believe that any of the races can be yellow, as well as the above listed color.

Now, I am currently raising my 5th Chocobo. My very first Chocobo was Yellow (Jeuno bought egg) and I breed it with a Friends Black Chocobo(also Jeuno bought), the offspring produced a black (M). I then raised this Black Chocobo, and breed it with another friends black chocobo. It took 3 or 4 chocobo love sessions, before this resulting chick ended up growing up black (F) as well.

I then raised this Chocobo, breed it back with her father :shok: and ended up getting another Black (F) chocobo.

I have also given out a few chococards, and the resulting choco's from most of these have been black as well.

So to me, it seems that my Chocobo's are of the Destrier breed... since all I have been getting is Black or Yellow.

I have now breed my Black Chocobo, with a friends Red Chocobo, (which according to SE, should be a Courser). It is still a chick now (M), but Kamp Kweh told me that the resulting offspring will also be back (fwiw).

Now my question is this, do chocobo eggs contain "DNA" in that my new chick is 1/2 Destrier, 1/2 Courser? So that no matter what color this chick grows up to be, it is possible that its offspring could produce a Destrier or Courser, i.e Black or Red?

There is obviously some genetic information in eggs, as you can pass abilities down from parents to chick. So I guess my real question is how much genetic info is stored in an egg, and how many generations can it be passed down?

Has anyone out there say, breed a Blue and Red Chocobo, and have a Black offspring? And if so, was there a Black Chocobo in the family history anywhere?

I know nobody really knows, but I am interested in hearing other breeders theories about choco-genetics

I don't think there's DNA per se, but rather at some point(making the egg, hatching, adolescence, not sure which) the color gets set; but I think the parents only contribute a greater chance of getting a certain color. The stats and how you raise it(food, activites, etc) also have an effect I'm sure, but I can't really say what specifically.

My first chocobo was from and egg from the uncapped ISNM and it turned out red; my second was bred from two blue's and is blue as well. There are some people who have bred their yellow with a colored chocobo and still got a yellow, so the parentage is not a guarantee in the color of the offspring.

I totally forgot about the different breeds. Everyone has been caught up in the ZOMG COLOR... I've forgotten of the roots! *slaps my forehead*

That's exactly what got me wondering about the breeds. With the new Chocobo dye's on the horizon, If these breeds actually do exist in game, it could have an impact on breeding..

For example, a Rounsey dyed Green, would still be a Rounsey, and unable to produce a naturally green offspring.

I don't think the breed concept really translated over in practical terms. I think the different breeds are mostly backstory for different colors. It'd be nice if a green bird was significantly different than a black or red, but they're all pretty much the same bird.

As far as genetics, I'm not sure how much of it carries over. I'm sure there's got to be a point where you could start off with a yellow bird and eventually managed to crowd out the yellow genetic information with enough color pairings... but I'm not sure I'd want to try and find out.

I started off with a yellow bird, bred him to a (pure) blue female and got a blue female out of it. I ride around on her, but I don't really think of her as good breeding stock because there's a chance her offspring could be yellow even if you paired her with a (pure) blue male. Bleh. The black male I'm raising has no other colors in his bloodline, so that's the card I'd be more likely to pass out.

The egg waiting in my moghouse is a bit of a wildcard. The parents were green, but there's some black in the bloodline. I'm hoping it'll still turn out green. I want the plaque if nothing else.

I'll trade you a black card for a red card halif.

I was going to ask if I could score a red card off you. Just track me down in the game. I'll be free most of the evening, other than the Proto-Omega fight I'm about to do.

I gave up on chocobo breeding since I only get female hatchlings.

My main goal has been having one of each color just to have the plaques to decorate my moghouse, but I'd eventually like to expand that into having one purebred of each gender for each color.

Now... if they'd just get their thumbs out of their asses and let us start racing...

just out of curiousity, what benefit does chocobo breeding actually give? Do you actually get to ride the damned thing so you dont have to pay 2k to choco from Jeuno or whatever. And what in the world do choco's have stats for? Don't tell me that my choco can attack other choco's, that'd be F'n hilarious.

(or, for those of you who hate answering questions, just gimme a damned link ^.^)

haha, thanks

Yes, you can ride it. It costs however. You get a whistle after completing a quest, and to recharge it you need to shell out 1000 Gil per charge missing. Stats are increased by food, care plan, and interactivty options. Abilities are learned through Tell A Story interactivty option, using a key item you get through out doing various tasks with the Chocobo

For stats:
Strength: Speed
Endurance: Ride Time
Discernment: Affects learn rate of abilities
Receptivity: Affects hereditary stats and traits for offspring

Abilities(Max of 2):
Gallop: Increased Running Speed
Canter: Increases Endurance
Burrow: Increases odds of rarer items being found when digging.
Bore: Virtually the same as Burrow. They stack, however.
Treasure Finder: Increases odds of rarer items being found when playing Hot and Cold.
Auto-Regen: Increases energy restoration.

Discernment and Receptivity will play defensive roles in Chocobo Racing, allegedly. Same with Burrow and Bore. Such as having high discernment will result in the chocobo getting distracted less often.

I dont know much about breeding...but this may be the answer to any problems you may be having...

(actually, i have no idea but i wanted to type something)

hmmm, making you pay to ride your own choco is kinda lame, but a step in the right direction i suppose. I'd much rather breed a pimpin black choco then ride the standard yellow ones around. You mentioned recharging the 'whistle'. am i to take it that you can call the choco from anywhere (that chocos are allowed to go)? cause if so, thats WAY nice ^.^

so, after a considerable amount of breeding/stat increasing, how does a custom choco's speed/ride time compare to that of the standard jeuno rented choco? (assuming you focus on strength and endurance). would you say they're about the same? or has SE given us a slightly faster mode of transportation? cause to be honest, after playin a few other MMO's, traveling in FFXI seems to take FOOOOOOOOOOOOOREEEEEEEEEEEEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEER, lol.

ps: thanks for the info thus far ^.^

First-Class Strength and Endurance = Rental. But with Gallop and Canter, I'd assume they're better than rentals. I'm not entirely sure if they push the effect above their max from the stats. Yes, you can call them anywhere Chocobos are normally allowed to be. If you can't ride it, you can't call it. This includes outdoor areas like the Northlands.

You can get a First-Class Strength and Endurance chocobo without breeding, takes about 30-40 days(depends on how often you get a status effect.) On the downside, you'll never be able to get its Discernment high enough to teach it abilities while keeping First-Class Strength and Endurance before it's stats lock at age, so you'll need to breed to get a chocobo thats better than a rental(again, assuming traits can go over stat max effect.) Traits are passable, but only one of the possible 4(2 max per Parent.)

It's really nice when you party in the jungle and can just call your bird for a ride back to Kazham... or from Garliage Citadel back to Jeuno, etc.
