Because it was a new idea back then. If they did that now, it would suck. Which is what the new scary/epic/date/Sparta movies are doing. You can only milk something good for so long before it goes sour.

See I instantly dismissed that movie as soon as I saw previews just as I'm dismissing Cloverfield based on previews. If the previews are retarded chances are the movie sucks, and the best scenes were already shown.

QFT

I went over to a friend's house to kick it and she had a couple movies to watch and the choices were:

1. Black Snake Moan
2. Bridge to Tarabithia (sp)

I opted for Black Snake Moan since Samuel Jackson is a pimp. The majority went 2/3 for Bridge to Tarabithia. After watching that movie I have never EVER had my emotions manipulated like that all the while feeling violated from a Disney movie. Finally the ending came (thank God) and the scene was shown in the previews and I was like "WTF!?!?" At the very least they could have shown more scenes of that fantasy world instead of focusing on the death of that crazy broad who thought she was Indiana Jones swinging across a creek, but only cracking her skull and drowning. Here's to your dream of being a stunt woman. R.I.P.

i bet if the blair witch tore off Miss Liberty's head and rolled it down broadway, it would've done better at the box office

Blair witch was shit then, it's shit now. Difference between that and Cloverfield is that it almost looks like Cloverfield is being shot almost like a documentary. For examples that do notfail, see Special Bulletin and The Day After.
