Well, not "be" one, just think like one...

I've seen lots of debate on the board about how Bush sucks etc. And usually it's followed by - "He's a liar to the American People" etc etc, or some other daragatory statement that carries very little weight. So I'm just asking (the intelligent) why do you think Bush isn't doing a good job, or why does he suck?

^^

<<<<< Total Democrat (yes, I do vote)

But, I won't discuss politics on the boards, (even though I think Bush sucks  ).

I think he sucks, but since I am not a democrat, I can’t really convince you to be one.

Ok, I'll reword it, why do ppl think Bush suck? (Mainly Democrats)...

I'm not against democrats or anything to that extent, just wondering why so many people oppose him.

In my opinion he's doing an ok job.

I am neither a Republican or Democrat, and never will be. Let's put it this way: Bush is not as bad as Democrats portray him, and not as good as Republicans do. Did he start a war with Iraq for the sole purpose of attaining oil? Pretty much. Did he institute tax cuts for the rich? Yup.

But is he a warmonger hellbent on world destruction? Nope. Is he a puppet in the hands of the Catholic Church? No way.

If you really want to form an opinion about him, read an equal amount of material written about him from both Republicans and Democrats (there is no such thing as objective material, besides facts like birthdate, etc.). Form an opinion from there.

Have you even watched "Fahrenheit 9/11"? Take a fact from that movie that you think is off the wall or untrue, and then research it. You'll find that you can locate the same information that Michael Moore used.

I'm not saying that Bush is a liar or anything like that. He may have been manipulated by people that have been in the executive office for many years (Rumsfeld, Ashcroft, etc.). This is something we may not know until later in history. I know that his cabinet all had experience w/executive prcedure, but also probably had their own agenda.

However, I *will* say that President Bush is NOT a good public speaker. I believe that this is my biggest problem with him. He is not good at articulating his points, and often speaks in phrases rather than sentences. His sentences are often broken up into parts, and I don't believe he carries the speaking ability that President Clinton had. President Bush may have charisma, but it is not like that of Clinton.

I also believe that Bush is a divider rather than a uniter (sp?). This last election was extremely divided. The country has a very divided opinon about President Bush. It seems as if there is no in-between, and you either like him or dislike him. Bush's foreign policy really upsets me also. We are a nation of many cultures and races, and that says to me that we should reflect that in our foreign policy.

I don't believe Bush does this. From what I have witnessed/gathered, he carries the "we're the only super-power left" or "we're Americans and we can kick everyone's ass" attitude. I just think he's too gung-ho on America. I think he forgets what this country was founded on.

This is just my opinion, although FFXI is no place for politics. (I'm being rushed, lol)

The first thing people should understand. Is if you are too polarized your vote is meaningless. If no matter what Bush says, you're going to make fun of it. If no matter what Kerry says, you're going to call him a scumbag... nobody gives a shit about you. Your vote(or lack thereof) is already in the bag. You're going to be ignored.

That being said, I voted for Bush. No I don't think most of the bullshit said about Kerry was true. No I don't think he's a bad person. He's a politician yes, and all things that carry with that, but I wasn't going to cry myself to sleep if he won. You people have to learn understand the actual difference between the liberal and the conservatives in this country, is no so big. You also have to learn what sort of political rederic is inflamatory and stuipid.

Calling Kerry unpatriotic is inflamatory and stupid. Saying he wouldn't protect America is stupid. Like if you saw the Republican convention, Zell Miller went on a huge list of defense programs that Kerry votes against.
The conclusion anyone with a brain should have came to is, he prefered to voke for other defense programs he thought were more useful. This is an example of political bullshit at its finest. Dumbass republicans were going on about this for months as proof Kerry was unfit.

What other political bullshit do people go crazy about? Tax cut for the rich? More horseshit. The tax cuts are across the board. The rich benefit the most from them because they pay the most amount of taxes. Cutting taxes without cutting the richest taxes has no economic growth, it only leads the country more towards communism. But people ignore this fact. No one gives a shit about the reason the politicians they don't like aren't evil bastards, they just want to hear the juicy stuff. Why do you think our voter turnout is so low?

Since I believe this was all rooted in my Konartist post, that is why I called him an ignorant prick. If he wanted to speak politics, which in the first place had no purpose in our exp party, at least have an opinion more informed than "Bush is an idiot because he's a racist idiot who killed iraques for oil."
I mean, seriously. There are VALID points against Bush by intelligent liberals. There are logical and idealogical debatable views that are likely to bring me to a stalemate. I can't argue bullshit propoganda. I'm not going to turn around and say horseshit about the democrats that I don't believe is true either.
People are SO SO obsessed with winning they have to demonize their opposition. It's ridiculous!

lorelaiy I didn't see your post at the time I made mine and I'd like to comment.

Michael Moore is an entertainer, nothing more or less. His target is Democrats who already hate Bush, and he sells them on things they want to believe. This last election was all about Bush. The democrats who voted for Kerry, in a vast majority did so because they hated Bush.
In all fairness: Liberals tend to be more emotional and less logical in terms of political decisionmaking. Except for extremists, most Republicans you won't find protesting. Republicans may picket, Democrats will throw parades in hatred. Polarization is the problem. Michael Moore is the problem. CBS is the problem. Bill O'Rielly is the problem. Fox news is the problem. Biased commentary. People not looking for the truth, looking for any way to make the opposition look as bad as humanly possible.

WOW! Constructive political posts (for the most part)!

</Shocked>

To add my two cents, I really do not like people who are too polarized on the political spectrum. Here is my reason why:

An extreme liberal in my Theology class said: "Bush is just using Iraq as a front from which he will wage war on Iran next. Soon there will be nothing more than an "American empire" in the Middle East."

An extreme conservative in my Government class said: "It's a good thing Canada gave us Alaska, other wise the red, white, and blue may be stretched farther North than it is today" (LOL didn't we [the U.S] BUY Alaska from Russia?)

These extremists are too focused on supporting their views that they cannot even get their facts straight.

On another topic, I recently learned that "good ol' Arny" of California is pushing (or has pushed) to establish a panel of former judges to head the redistricting process as opposed to the more common (and hurtful) polarized gerrymandering. Can any Californians or anyone give more info on this?

I do not understand what you are saying, Firestreak. How can Bill O'Reilly and Michael Moore be the problem? If exercising your First Amendment right is a problem, then there are a lot of people that are problematic.

Their statements are extreme, and sometimes off the wall. I will acknowledge that. They take things out of context, and I will ackowledge that. However, I do not believe this makes them *the* problem. I don't believe there is one specific problem, but instead believe that it is the combination of many factors. There is truth in each of the statements such extremists make. Some of Michael Moore's statments are true, and some of O'Reilly's are true.

Yes, they are entertainers. Yes, they are trying to pursuade. All this does not mean that you should ignore their statements altogether. I believe part of the problem are the people that make uninformed decisions. This includes the people the that chose Bush/Kerry because of default reasons, such as voting an entire Republican ticket. You may not know what the candidate stands for/intends to do in office, but you vote for him just because he is in your political party. To me, this is only a part of the problem, but it is still a problem. People that make uninformed votes should not be able to vote. (Sorry if this upsets some)

Blah, I've talked too miuch already and will wait for a response.

The problem is, of course, that too many people JUST see Moore or JUST see O'Reilly or Coulter or Chomsky and the ONLY base their opinions on what the guy on TV told them to. Extremists are stupid. There's no denying that.

Are there things I don't like about Bush and the Republican party? Of course. I didn't blindly vote straight Repub in the election and I don't think I ever could. For some of my peers, it was moreso "The devil you know (Bush) vs. the devil you don't know (Kerry.)" On the other side of the fence, all I heard was NO MORE CHIMPY NO BLOOD FOR OIL SELECTED NOT ELECTED and all this hodgepodge of vitriol and garbage spewed not only towards Bush, but towards everyone who supported him.

And as for Moore, he's a master of taking true statements and weaving them into a lie. A friend of mine posted an excellent rebuttal on his blog; as soon as I dig it up I'll post it here.

Hmm, that didn't take long. Anyway, from 'Paratrooper' (a D.C reporter and one of the people inside the Pentagon during 9/11):

I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time lately debating with folks about whether or not Moore is “right”. Some hard core Moore fan will bring up a topic that Moore apparently “opened their eyes” to, and then I spend a week or more researching the subject, just so I can report back with what I have learned about the subject. Invariably, each time I look into the nuts and bolts, without exception, I have found that the story reality tells, and the story Moore tells never, ever jibes.

My evidence presented , the usual response is to totally ignore what I have just said and quickly follow up with a “Well, what about such and such”, always another point Moore has made in the movie.

But more often lately, I have been getting a new answer. “Yeah, okay, so he skewed some facts in the movie, but his overall message is still right.

This bugs me. This bugs me a lot.

I have dissected Moore’s film to death as have many others on this site and other places. Throughout everything I have read, I can only find two of points Moore made were completely accurate. The first, that if you’re going to be so gross as to slather saliva all over your comb and then run it through your hair, you’d ought to make sure the cameras are turned off. The second, John Ashcroft is a lousy singer.

But are either of those things bad enough to scream “regime change” from every campus across the fruited plain? Of course I’m being facetious, but really , what else is there?

What was the thing that Moore got so “right”?

Was it those 7 minutes when Bush was scared stiff in his chair, which turned out to be five minutes while Bush was waiting for the “all okay” from his staff to excuse himself? (After all, there was a probable assaniation attempt on his life just a few hours earlier.)

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the oil pipeline that Bush helped the Taliban build through Afghanistan, which turned out to be a natural gas pipeline and was scrapped in the planning phase during the last administration?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the haunting scene of the Army reservist Peter Damon, who has lost both his arms and was being “left behind” by the Army, who turned out to be mad as hell for being included in Moore’s movie without his permission ,and in fact supports the President and the war, and loathes Moore. Not to mention Lt. Col. Chester Buckenmaier, the anesthesiologist who treated Damon at the 21st Combat Support Hospital in Iraq, who stated
“I was appalled. This was Joseph Goebbels-type propaganda,”

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was is the revelation that Bush somehow finagled a job for his cousin to sit at the decision desk at Fox news to call the election for him, but it turned out happened to be that his cousin was a 23 year veteran election analyst who, along with a group of others ( dems and repubs)called not the election, but their announcement of the results as reported by VNS four hours after the last poll closed?(they were also the last to retract Gore’s name as victor)

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it that damning headline that showed Bush has lost the recount, which turned out to be a total fabrication, based on an op-ed page in an obscure newspaper?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it those dastardly Marine recruiters who were caught slinking away from the more affluent mall to go recruit from the other less affluent mall in the suburbs, which as it turns out was exactly the opposite as we learned with a little research.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the scene with the Congressman who avoided Moore’s question “Why don’t you sign up you child to go fight in Iraq?”, who it turns out doesn’t even have a child?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the revelation that Bush personally authorized the Saudi Flights while airspace was closed when it turns out that Richard Clarke admitted doing it and they actually flew out after airspace opened, which the 9-11 commission confirmed this as well.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was is the revelation that the Saudi embassy gets special protection from Bush, when it turns out that any embassy gets Secret Service protection if they request it.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the imagery of a jocular prewar Iraq with kids flying kites and people sipping tea in the market just before American bombs rained down on them, when it turns out that Iraq was actually torturing those men and those kids were lucky to not be in “kids prison” with their friends as a punishment to their parents.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the crass statement Bush made about stopping terrorism during that montage of politicians talking about the Iraq war, and then he ended it with that “Now watch this drive” statement, when in reality that statement was made before the Iraq war , and he was talking about the problems in Israel, and the terrorist attck in Isreal that morning?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the shocking revelation that not one single Congressman or Senator read the Patriot act before signing it, despite the obvious fact that Congressmen and Senators wrote the Patriot act, which was largely made up of RICO laws, with “and terrorists too” tacked on the end of each of them?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was is the scene where Moore describes Bush’s Presidency as “having not been able to get anything done” before 9-11, yet in reality, he got the largest tax cut in history passed and passed the largest bi-partisan educational bill in history?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the scene where Jeffery Tobin states that “If there was a statewide recount, under every scenario, Gore won the election.”, despite that a recount was conducted,(no “if’s Jeffery) actually five times, and in all but one, including the one that Gore asked for, Bush won?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it that quote from the Washington Post that incorrectly stated that Bush spent 42% of his first 7 months on office on vacation, but that time included weekends, time he spent in church, and time at Camp David with foreign leaders.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it Moore’s statement that, after becoming despondent because of his failure to pass anything, ( see above) Bush spent the “rest of the month of August at his ranch in Crawford”, despite the fact that he traveled to five different states in just one week in late August?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it that Moore tried to prove that the administration was trying to tie Iraq to 9/11 with this quote from Condaleeza Rice :

“Oh, indeed there is a tie between Iraq and what happened on 9/11.”

When in fact, the entire quote was :

“Oh, indeed there is a tie between Iraq and what happened on 9/11. It’s not that Saddam Hussein was somehow himself and his regime involved in 9/11, but, if you think about what caused 9/11, it is the rise of ideologies of hatred that lead people to drive airplanes into buildings in New York.”

?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the revelation that the Right Wing Carlyle Evil Empire hired Bush’s father as a consultant, while omitting the other Evil Right Wing investors, such as billionaire George Soros, Alice Albright, daughter of Madeleine Albright, Clinton’s former Secretary of State; Arthur Lewitt, Clinton’s former SEC head?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it that Amnesty International designated “human rights violator Saudi Arabia” ( a distinction they share with Iraq) invested 1.4 million in the BDM which was owned by Carlyle Group, where the President’s father was a consultant, despite the fact that former president Bush didn’t join the Carlyle advisory board until April, 1998—five months after Carlyle had already sold BDM to another defense firm?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it that crass statement from Bush that Moore showed us: “Some people call you the elite, I call you my base” as he stood there among a bunch of rich folks, despite that the uncropped shot of that speech showed that Bush was sitting next to Al Gore at that fundraiser, not for a campaign, but for a children’s hospital where they raised 10 million for the charity?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it Moore’s revelation that Bush was closing down Veteran’s hospitals, despite the fact that the hospitals being closed down were in areas of shrinking populations and being replaced with new Veteran’s hospitals. He also increased funding for all VA hospitals.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it Moore’s revelation that a majority of the folks purged from Florida’s voter rolls before the election in 2000 were Black, despite the discovery that in fact less than half of the folks purged were Black?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the sad footage of the Military funeral at Arlington national cemetery that Moore didn’t have permission from the family to use? The family refers to Moore as a maggot that eats off the dead.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the footage of the goofball with the parachute escape system who didn’t give Moore permission to use his image or his name? I read he just filed a lawsiut.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it Moore’s statement that

“No President had ever witnessed such a thing on his inauguration day...”

in reference to the protests at Bush’s inauguration, despite the fact that Abraham Lincoln actually had to sneak through Baltimore after his inauguration and the city wouldn’t even provide police protection?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the astonishing before and after transformation the Moore showed us of a happy, Patriotic Military Mom before and a emotional shell of a woman after her son was killed in Iraq, despite that the happy scenes were filmed after her son was killed also?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it the creepy blackout scene with just the sounds of the planes crashing on 9/11 that Moore blatantly stole form another documentary in his typical unimaginative fashion?

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it those references from Craig Unger’s Book , House of Bush , House of Saud, which was refused publishing in Britain because of their libel laws, which means you can’t publish outright lies over there without being sued? Moore uses this one book as the only source for many of his “shocking revelations”.

Nope, that can’t be it.

Was it those interviews with soldiers that Moore took without from George Gittoes’ movie, The Soundtrack of War which made Mr Gittoes very unhappy “because their interviews were taken out of context,” and stated “Michael got access to my stuff and assumed that I would be happy for it to be in 9/11. I would actually have been quite happy for it not to be in 9/11.” Luckily for Gittoes, Moore ended up paying him $50,000.00 a month or so after F911 came out. He soon stopped complianing about his footage being mis-used.

Nope, that can’t be it.

It can’t be any of that stuff. So what exactly is it that Moore is right about? What is Fahrenheit9/11 right about? More importantly, if Moore is right about his “message” than why in the hell would he need to use peoples images without their permission, edit speeches, use creative cropping to change the reference of the real scene, fabricate newspaper headlines, quote from a book so dubious that it can’t even be published in Britain, use quotes out of context, change time lines, steal scenes from other movies, switch the economic demographics of malls, tell half stories, and all of the other visual tricks he uses?

If Bush is as bad as Moore says he is, if our troops are that bad, if America is that messed up, why didn’t he just come out and prove it? Why all the tricks? Why the innuendo? Why the implications? Why not just prove it?

You know why.

I am a Republican and proud of the fact, do I agree with all of Bushes actions? No, the whole religion thing creeps me out. I am pro stem cell research and pro choice. I think the enviorment is in important. Do I believe he lied to the American people? No I do not, I think he knew about the same as the rest of us. Looking back to I support the Iraq war? Honestly no, why should we fight to remove the one man that can keep these...people(Using the word VERY loosely hear)...in line. I think Afghanistan was justifiable, and I honestly think Bush thought Iraq was justifiable. And if I hear one more person talk about the butchering of inocent civilians or the torture of Iraqi prisioners... Look up Bataan Death March, The Haulacaust, Dresden, Hittos vs the Tuttis, the purges in Cambodia or the Soviet Union etc... That will show you what a real atrocity is.
Here is where my support from Bush comes from, he acts upon what he believes is right. He is not willing to sacrifice ethics for the politicaly expedient answer. He is willing to step on toes to get what is best for the American people, not the Canadian people, not the Germans (Yea they are a REAL good judge in charachter), nor the Spainards (The election the terrorist won). The whole thumbing the nose at the UN thing was very funny as well.

Take a good look at the media.. 95% of the information we get is biased like that. You can argue it's the publics fault for being so easily tricked, but of COURSE the public is going to start to believe. How many people watch C-Span for all their news? How many people could actually uinderstand it? Build up a loyalty base, sell to your base, this is how entertainment works. This has always been a problem and always be a problem. It's no longer a free speech issue and it's an issue of, how can a canditate actually be allowed to get their message out without >their< views being distorted? Where is America getting is news, ask yourself that. Not the top 10% most informed but the majority of the voting base.
Places to not get your news: The Daily Show
Places to get your news: CNN's Crossfire. C-Span. I think MSNBC is fairly good as well.. sometimes.

I mean, I'm just trying to point out, don't use freaking F 9/11 as a source of real news.

I think the best way to understand this is simply a test. Find someone who believes Bush is "an idiot" or some extreme insult that's obviously untrue. Ask them why. Ask them for what reasons. Ask yourself how many of those reasons are probably remotely true.

I totally agree, Firestreak. Do not get your news from Fahrenheit 9/11.

But do you not believe Bush lied to the American public? Don't bring up Clinton, although he DID lie about geting a blowjob. It is a much different thing to lie about American security. We invaded Iraq because they "supposedly" had weapons of mass destruction. I am yet to see evidence that such weapons existed.

Was Saddam Hussein (sp?) a bad guy? Hell yes, he was an evil piece of shit. I would feel much better about the war in Iraq if he had been honest and just said, "I want to take out this scumbag."

Insted we have lost soldiers to a cause that was illegitimate. The legitimacy of such an offensive would have been better w/an honest purpose from the start.

This is a question I often ask, but can never get an answer from people. Why did you believe him in the first place?

^^ That is a good example of being Republican, but not being an extreme Conservative Republican.
