I'm curious - How many (mostly male, but females apply too) actually cook their own dinner. Or at least cooks every once in a while?

I've noticed a trend lately. Everyone seem to either rely on their partner or parents to cook for them, or else buy fast food, or something that can be microwaved fast. While I enjoy fast food every now and then, or microwaved food, its not because it actually tastes better. Quite the opposite, I can make the very same thing myself and make it taste better in the process. Its because I, like everyone, enjoy being lazy every now and then.

Its quite a pleasure to be able to cook whatever you feel like. Like a good Caesar salad with Caesar Dressing, and why not a nice Orange Chocolate Fondant cake for desert, like I made today?

Not only is it nice to be able to cook what you feel like, it is also, 90% of the time, more healthy then premade food and fast food. It is also a nice way to impress girls by, say, preparing a romantic dinner for two.

Really, why does cooking seem to be a dying art among males?

I used to help my mom out with cooking dinner whenever I got the chance. I picked up a few things, though not enough to really say I could make something amazing on my own.
Dad usually brings home something, or my grandfather takes us out to eat now. Save for maybe once a week, my mom doesn't cool dinner. And when she does, it's usually when I'm not home.

I cooked meals for my family every night, and now i cook meals most nights for my room mates.

I love cooking and its pretty much how i hooked my current girlfriend, of more than a year.

If i haven't said it yet, i love cooking. I'm actually making my own cookbook and right now i'm up to about 100 recipies that i've made on my own, or that i've picked up from random places.

I put most of my recipes in my iPod :P Makes for easier shopping lists so that I don't forget anything.

Ever made Marshmallows, Makelith? Makes for tasty toppings on cakes. (at least I think its called topping <.<; You know, the thing you have around the cake.)

I rarely cook. Frozen stir fry's and steamed veg with potatoes seems to be my diet at the moment. When i'm in Germany Chii cooks me lovely meals :D. I can cook steak and roasts, oh and I make a mean Full English Breakfast :).

I'm not much of a desert guy, but i dabbled in it once. It was totally not worth cleaning up all the things that i made sticky and gross by the end.

I'm more of a food kinda guy. I'm starting to make my way in to appetizers, though. I make a mean ass biscuit. Makes Red Lobster biscuits look like a hot pocket.

Yeah... marshmallows SUCKS to clean up afterwards. Waaay too sticky to make it on a daily basis because you feel like eating marshmallows <.<;

I cook at least six nights a week.

I made a fettucini alfredo with grilled chicken and garlic sauteed broccoli tonight. Topped it with fresh squeezed lemon juice and some parmesan cheese. For dessert there's peach cobbler.

It works.

If you learn to cook Kel, i can say with ~90% certainty that the guys won't be able to get enough of you.

Well...maybe. All the gay people i know already know how to cook *almost* as well as me. Its like they have a natural talent.

If I had a bigger kitchen area, I would probably cook more. Thing is apartments are too small to store all the supplies and lack counter top space for a full course meal. Also not having an electric stand mixer makes baking somewhat annoying.

Fresh items are usually easy to assemble since most items are either chopped/cut or thrown into some boiling water. Odd enough, a lot of stuff only requires boiling water and a watchful eye.

Kitchen appliances such as a crockpot are always handy to have for those who have time constraints. Throw stuff into it before going to work/classes and then come home to a meal.

Casseroles are easy too but a lot of recipes make huge portions (leftovers for over a week until one is sick of it). Throwing stuff together in a dish and letting it bake is pretty simple enough.

Originally, I would say to do some frozen stir fry meals when pressed for time but they have preservatives in them (they make some people unbelievably sick too). Grabbing small portions of the fresh stuff into a skillet is a way to avoid the preservatives.

For those who hate cleaning after desserts, get harder durability supplies. The cheap stuff does not take to baking too well. Glass and stainless steel ftw. Most things that are non dishwasher safe should probably not be in a kitchen with men. Parchment paper is awesome for putting under baking items (makes cookies easy to get off the sheet and less mess on the tray itself).

As for the red lobster in fort collins... those things are cheese bricks. <_<

I'll take any man woman or whatever on in a cook off any day of the week, except tuesday/thursday. Those are my crockpot/slowcooker days.

Red Lobster biscuits are really good out here in MN, but thats the way it is with just about anything (woot woot), but i still stand by the fact they are dwarfed in comparison to mine.

I'm similar to you Uzor except a bit more towards the other extreme. I rarely cook anymore, yet I am very capable of it. I learned to cook from both my parents who can both cook up a killer meal. I enjoy cooking when I actually get the chance/have the time to do it, but usually I just have to grab something quick, cheap, and easy. When the need arises I can cook some delicious meals though :D

Try making marshmallows <.<; they're far from your normal cooking mess... Hell, first time I baked it I used an electrical mixer, and the marshmallow "dough" or whatever actually broke the mechanical parts inside of it, due to how its so hard, yet sticky.

Sure, I guess it was rather stupid of me to use a normal electrical mixer in the first place, but I've always learned the hard way...

edit: not a mixer... you know, those electrical whipping machines. wtf are they called in english anyway? >.O my mind's drawing a blank... possibly due to being 3 AM

I cook pretty much every night for 14 people.

I don't cook unless I'm having someone over. Takes too long, and I'm lazy.

I cook like crazy. I probably make about 90% of our meals at home; usually simple stuff like a roasted chicken or beef stew, but I love having company over because it gives me an excuse to go out and buy that leg of lamb. I also like to bake, everything from cookies to breads to souffles. I grow my own fresh herbs year-round, and during the warmer months I have an organic vegetable garden (in fact my peas are being planted tomorrow). Osse doesn't cook as much, mainly because he never has to, but he's at least proficient. (He made dinner for V-day; seared ribeyes, mashed sweet potatoes and sauteed green beans).

I grew up with my dad being the cook in our house. My mom only uses the kitchen for baking and making sauce, everything else my dad does. Most everyone in my family cooks, both men and women (in fact my aunt owns a catering business) and we all have an appreciation of food that borders on obsession. When I do go out to eat I usually prefer to get stuff that I just can't make as well at home, which is usually tikka masala, sushi, pho, or a good brick-oven pizza (my electric oven sucks dong when it comes to making pizza).

I cook about 5-6 nights a week. Although, admittedly, 90% of those meals I just throw something on my hibachi grille while I sit outside and haved a beer with my neighbour.

I never eat fast food. Have you guys SEEN the things they put in that stuff??? Good god.

I also baked one killer 8 layer cake for my friends this past thanksgiving. Nothing but pudding and whipped cream, with fresh strawberries, and really thin layers of cake in between. Hot damn... I think I'm gonna make another one tomorrow! haha

I will admit, I sometimes fail at cooking things though. I tried to make one of the simplest things the other day... spaghetti and meatballs, but the meatballs were really dry tasting and ended up falling apart. I used the slow cooker and everything! Guess I left it on too long... ah well.

But I do know what your talking about Uzor. I've met people recently (my current gf) who can't even make grilled cheese without botching it up! So sad...

General rule: I cook about 75-80% of the time. The rest, we eat out.

She bakes. :-)
