This may come off as a dumb question, but...

So my AIM (v 6 and 5) and Firefox just came up with corrupt files and nothing came up after a chkdsk. Am I better off reinstalling both firefox and aim or should I do a complete HD wipe? If I'm going to do a complete HD wipe I'm thinking I'm better off just bring this laptop in and getting lemon law on it to get a new one seeing as though it still has over heating problems.

Corrupt files could be caused by a couple things: bad sectors and massive fragmentation. If your HDD isn't fragmented much and chkdisk isn't reporting any problems, I'd go with a reinstall of the apps first. If that fails, you might be looking at a bad HDD.

The overheating you mentioned can cause your hardware to start failing. I'd go with getting another so you don't lose any important data.

How do I frag it? I've tried doing it before but got completely lost.

Right-mouse click your C:\ drive, tools,Degragmentation. If you don't see high fragmentation, it's probably not an issue.

Also, Arianelle is right; bad heating could cause HDD damage.

All it says is format sooooo... no worries?

Edit: NVM it was under properties.

Is it really overheating? Many laptops run pretty warm under normal operation. If it's overheating, newer games with taxing engines will crash after some period of time.

WoW was causing an over-heat restart after alt+tabbing. I'll randomly over heat when just browsing the net with it even after adjusting things and adding a cooling foam around some stuff. I'm tempted to just bring it back if it wasn't for having an english class this semester and doing a paper a week.

You have a temperature monitor running when it crashes while you browse? Overheating in 2D apps is highly uncommon, it's more likely something else. If it is overheating, dear lord I hope that's a sign of defect. I'd check some forums (www.notebookreview.com is decent) and see if anyone else has similar problems with your model.

No don't have one setup for it. I should have after I got it back in December after 2 months with out it. I was just so tired of LolBestBuy that I just stopped caring.

Do you know of any?

Edit: I downloaded SpeedFan and it says that my Core is the one that's heating at 63C where the HD and Temp1 is at 47. I have no clue what it means. Damn my limited knowledge of computers. I can only assume Core means the cores on my processor.

PC Probe is a good one; monitors everything from temperature & fan RPMs to voltage levels on each PSU rail (12v, 5v, 3.3v, etc). However this is an ASUS product so I can't testify how well it co-operates with non-ASUS boards.

Those readings... Core @ 63ºC is high but not critical. This is while you're idle in Windows?

Temp1 - talk about non-descriptive. We're strongly interested in your GPU reading though. Whether that's an ATI card or an Nvidia card, both include a temperature monitor somewhere in the Advanced properties of your Display settings (where you change your desktop resolution). If it's an Intel GPU, that I don't know about. It's worth looking at least.

Those temps were with just AIM and Firefox open. I closed both apps and no change in temperature.

I tried installing the one you linked, but it says that it only supports ASUS motherboards.

That just ain't right.

Take screenshots, hell re-create it if you can right in front of the techs at the retail outlet. If there's two brain cells amidst the whole group of them, and those lonely cells happen to collide and create a thought, they'll be working on a replacement or at worst a repair for you.

Oh no it's at lemon law right now and now my Temp 1 is over heating. I have a feeling the temp 1 is the graphics chip or motherboard in general. I just had a massive slow down that actually made me have to crash my computer. Temps hit 135 on Temp 1 and 165-170 on the Core. Now it's saying the HD is above temps etc. I had AIM, Firefox, and the Zune media center open at the time nothing else.

I think that's about the point where shit starts blowing up.

Yeah it's going back tomorrow when I have errands to run. I just hope they plan to give me ram upgrades for free because the new laptop would have Vista on it, and from what I know it's almost a need to have 2 gigs of ram.
