Couple of things

just because it you can't see it does not mean it not there. The problem should not be ignored should be corrected.

What could happen is wipe all current rep and comment and start from scratch, then you couls make the rep system public.

Again, I thought the rep system meant absolutely nothing to you?

Can you see who's giving you red dots (just about wrote dongs :/ ) and just no comment or not see it at all?

It takes off the name, date, comment, and the dot. It's as if there was no rate up/ down at all

The problem IS the comments. Its not your points.

I'd say the problem lies completely within the system. If there is that much insecurity around that we really truly do have to worry about our rep points on this board...it's time to do away with it. I'm going to be pushing for that as of now, but I would like to hear comments for it, against it, and I need to speak with the cronys as well.

That's not too bad - I could live with that.

It'd be better if they just couldn't touch you at all, ie. "You can not effect the reputation of this user" or something, but the above isn't bad.

I would like to see a post count cap as to when users can be rated up/down. A lot of users I'm sure get scared off before they even get a general vibe for the board due to back door comments.

If the person is ignored it removes (just in the area where you can view your rep) the dot and the comment.. but if you unignore them.. its still there.. So the question is.. Can people deal with being rated down and not know about it? I personally will not be ignoring anyone for that reason.. If they wanna rate me down, I wanna know why. I'm not skerd =P

speak with the cronys as well.
*cronies :p

DOWN WITH THE MIROS ADMINISTRATION (jk - had to make a US Gov't joke at your expense since you used the word "Crony")

it's both. Yes the comment is derogatory and should not be allowed but also the hounding of 1 person to rate them down not on basis of topic but on bases of dislike in past. Finding any post just to rate them down. That the issue. If there going have a rep system it should be policed, or it should be removed completely. I care less if you like me or not, but if you going rate me down rate me down about the post not me.

ok, i've been keeping up with this cause it intrigues me (and my cat sat on my computer and somehow subscribed me to it? go friggen figure...)

i know i've only been here a week, but it seems like the rep system is much like similar ones i've seen. there are some ups and downs, but in the end it does nothing more than let everybody judge everybody. it can abused like any system, and unfortuneately there is no ONE real solution that EVERYBODY is gonna be happy with (their rarely is xD) again, only here a week, but i'm with mir on this one. i think doing away sounds like the best option thus far. it's a cute idea, but unless EVERYONE using the system is an honest and decent person with it, it will become nothing more than a petty popularity contest, and an excuse for douchebags to do bad things :/

it's also not like everything even remotely usefull is taken care of elsewhere... if you would rate someone down for a post, why not report it? if it's really bad enough to warrant judging them publicly, i'm guessing it's bad enough to warrant reporting the post...

and also, if you really have an issue with somebody, it should be dealt with between the two parties involved, and not publicly. even if you don't make the comments public the points still are... it's like....
if you have an issue with me, talk to me about it, don't go badmouthing me to the forum. ya know?

:/ does that even make sense? xD

So we are going to go with the less popular option of deleting something, rather than going with the majority who find no fault in the current system. Catering to the minority will never allow a board to grow. There is usually a reason why the minority is the minority, and that is because they are wrong. If every time some group comes to you and says they aren't happy with the board, and you oblige, then more power to you, but you are giving not only yourself more work, but usually losing ground in public opinion by the majority of users.

So there are a few people who believe the reputation system is their personal playground. That is why the ignore function exists. These people can't all be dealt with with one swift removal of the system because they will all find something to go to next. These people need to be dealt with on a case by case basis.

As ridiculous as it sounds and unnecessary as it is, make the reputation system viewable to Admins and Super Mods, hell, get another mod who will deal with just reputation issues. People that can't seem to deal with the ignore function will have their cases looked at, and if there is any sort of harrassment, it is dealt with.

Better words have never been spoken.

I'm not arguing for the removal of the reputation system - just to be clear. I'm arguing for some checks and balances for those few morons that feel like ruining it for the rest of us. Either have ignore completely remove all contact from the person doing the ignoring (ie. "You can not effect the reputation of this user") or have mods deal with out of control users, as you said, case by case.

There is a problem - and you're right, it's with a minority of the users but it is a problem, especially for those being harassed.

The people using ignore properly won't be effected because they got what they wanted and aren't seeing the repeated posts of people they don't want to see and by adding either of the two remedies above *or any better ones added later on* you remove a harassment tool from immature board members.

I agree with Rappa and Audino about this. There are things that have been said on my rep board that I'd rather nobody else see, especially dependent on how far back the viewing could be. Likewise, and I don't really know since I generally forget everything I say in Rep after I post it, but there might be things I've said to others that I intended to stay private to that person relevant to the post I was repping-up/down.

Your decision entirely of course, and I don't think that this circumvents it entirely, as it might not show the ignored users' rep-ups/downs to anyone else either, in which case we'd only ever see a bunch of ":P" or "lol" or "nice post" or "wow, that was fuckin stupid".

It's a hard call, to be sure.

I agree with this. I have not posted anything to anyone's rep that I would be ashamed of or worry about how others would perceive it. However, there are personal things that I have posted to people I am close to, either for moral support or in regard to private things we've discussed that I did so believing they were the only ones who would see my words. I understand if you mods feel the need to make changes going forward, from this point on, but I very much disagree with revealing past comments, previously understood to be private, for public viewing. It's a breach of trust, just like someone posting the contents of a Private Message, and it's an unnecessarily crappy thing to do to the people who haven't abused the system.

Making the change from today on will make your point just fine; maybe people will think twice before they post something idiotic then. I just don't think it's necessary to trot everyone's thoughts they expressed in confidence out there because of a handful of people who don't know when to step away from the keyboard.

if it's possible to completely remove contact with that person, that would be better than removing it entirely, however if that's not possible then there really is no way to remove this harrassment tool. as it's been mentioned, you can still be rated down by someone if you ignore them :/

the complete removal of rating rights to those who are ignored seems like an ideal solution, but also seams damn complicated xD

Like you said earlier, vB is probably too limited to removing all contact with other users, including full removal of rating privilidges. If that were possible, then there is a perfect solution. Since it can't be done (as far as I know) we should go case by case. I'd hate to see something as widely used as the reputation system disappear.

It seems unless it's done very carefully, there's room for even worse abuse by blocking one person from rating another, since people can be removed from an ignore list just as easily as they can be added.

It actually is possible to run a forum without one, but Bob Sagat would never approve, to be sure.

touchee! vous avez raison! i hadn't thought about the private nature of the comments made with ratings.... so going public sounds like a bad idea now. hmmm. maybe there would be a way to make some comments private? maybe if they're on your friends list or something? wait. no that sounds ridiculously complex xD (i've only done some minor programming in java, and i have no idea how a forum is done, nor what language it's done in, but the sheer logic issues involved in that are daunting @_@)

well it seems that any idea that we come up with is either going to be unpopular or require retarded amounts of work.

Or not.

If someone is insecure about their dots, thats their problem. They should realize its not that big a deal. Or are we removing the flameboard next because people who get flamed are insecure?
