got an odd problem with my new computer.... whenever i'm playing FFXI, or any other full screen game, whenever i try and alt tab to something else it just... pauses for like 3 seconds and then does it, like a full blown 3 second freeze, and when i tab back, it does it again... like, everything freezes completely for 3 seconds, if i tab from fullscreen to fullscreen it's 6 seconds... now, my comp stats are (copy and paste from my computer properties)

System:
Windows XP pro V2002 Svc pack 2

Computer:
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU
6600 @2.40GHz
2.40GHz, 2GB of Ram

Page file size is initial3070GB max4096 GB
vid card is: Radeon X1900 512mb mem dual dvi

any suggestions?

Maybe because you're not supposed to alt-tab out of them?

You use a static swap or dynamic?

Are your drivers up to date? How about Direct X?
direct X and all my graphics card and other drivers are up to date.

Wise master, small steps prs

Could just be your processer going from maxed to regular load... full screen games can do a number on your system.

Did it always do this?

My system is similar to yours, im going to go try it and report back and let ya know whats up.

it's a new computer and it's been doing this since day one, though on my older and much less powerful computer it didn't have this sort of problem at all, just lag from having 2 chars at a telepoint at worst.

Nevermind, if I had read the OP fully the answer's already there.

Is that an ATI-built card or is it OEM like Sapphire or ASUS? Have you tried Omega drivers?

I have the same vidcard and don't really have that problem. You know any details on your ram, i.e. mfr and timing settings?

check your ram, see what you got. Check your processes and see whats eating everything up and causing the hang.
You could even possibly have a memory leak.

As is now, running XI, firefox, windows media player and with all those nice background processes i'm tallying in at 600m and about 20% of my cpu usage.

the card is OEM (sapphire)

*edit* just got back from Bios! i have tshirts for everyone and some wicked sunburn. all of my chipsets are set to enabled or auto.

OC yyour cpu, raise the voltage just ever so slightly on your cpu and your ram...

Do you know what your memory can handle though? Sounds like a buffering problem to me, and overriding the auto settings for mem timing may alleviate that.

If it's high-perf ram then your invoice should state the capabilities of your sticks.

getting my sunglasses and a pen and paper, going back to bios. gonna come back with a full list of my settings... any in particular i should be looking for?
*edit all my invoice mentions of the ram is the item desc which is letter for letter as follows
OC7 2 667 2048 VPDC-K DDR 2 667 2x 1.0 gb

That'll do: http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_ddr2_pc2_5400_value_pro_series_dual_channel

Timings: CL 5-5-5-15

Back to your BIOS, wench! See if your "automatic" settings look like:

CAS (Column Access Strobe): 5
tRCD (the RAS to CAS Delay): 5
tRP (time for RAS Precharge): 5
tRAS (time for Row Activation Suspension?): 15

CMD (command rate): 2T for compatibility, 1T for performance

For all of the above fiends, lower numbers usually mean better performance at possible cost of instability.

"write to memory" of 5T or just 5?

Looking at your results, I don't think these settings will make much of a diff in your setup but it's worth trying at least. Anyways if your "write to memory" is at 5T, try to lower that to 2T.

Also, set your Windows pagefile to be static - you said right now it's minimum 3070 max 4096. Set those both to 3072 (1.5x physical ram). Windows isn't, and never has been, terribly good at handling it's swap file dynamically - again this probably won't make a world of difference but almost every tweak guide I've seen recommends this.

just to necro this... and tell ya what it was...
I'd been living witht his issue for a while now but really it was manageable, who really needs to alt tab that much right?
anyhow, last night i unplugged my keyboard and took it to a friends house to use... when i came back and plugged it back in... ZAMMO! no problems at all! fucking weird.
