Strictly speaking of buying materials, yes, I do think it's worth it. I could make hundreds of thousand of gil every day just making bullets, bolts, and ninja tools if I weren't so lazy and didn't mind hanging out with that freaky circus everyday to make stacks of stacks.

And that's just with lolalchemy 98 and all subs 50+.

I think the problem is too many people shoot for those super big number HQ synths that just don't happen all the time. If you only aim for tier-0, you're only going to profit every now and then. If you aim for tier-1/2/3, you will profit more often. It's common sense. And ffxiah.com is your friend. Look for the green text. Is it green? Click it. Does it sell more than once every three years? Was the last one sold during the inflation days? Oh, they sell almost weekly for a solid profit margin? There you go. It's not rocket science. You can profit from any craft at just about any level if you're not completely ignorant.

I totally agree and very well said. Thanks for clearing that up ^^

Edit:

And as I mentioned, being "worth it" isn't just about sales. If you decided to take up corsair tomorrow and were able to save yourself 40% off the price of 12x99 iron bullets by synthing them yourself, you could consider that a profit in my opinion.

I always thought crafting for that reason alone is silly (I know you didn't craft just for this reason) but you make a good point and I stand corrected.

I havent looked at other crafts but at least in Clothcraft "almost" all tier 1 synths are pretty much dead. Unless you HQ more then the 7-10% you wont make any profit and even if you do get lucky the market is flooded and you will get constantly undercut.

Making those big number HQ, as you call them, is the best way to go as I see it. These items never gets flooded, you can set pretty much your own price on them (within reasonable limits) and the demand for them is high. Only problem is that people lack the gil to buy these rare synths.
But theres always someone willing to pay for them.
Be patient and they will sell eventually.

I suppose every craft is different. I speak only from experience with alchemy and subs so positively there are more players such as yourself with insight into profiting from this kind of synth.

Yar. Except I don't count cooking or fishing ^^
why would you not count cooking? without cook you would not have sushi, curry, cookies/crackers, marron glace, curse soup, yug drinks, tacos, all these are 60 + cooking skill, if no one lvled cooking then there would be a heck of alot of gimp parties.

Fishing is a craft do to the fact that without it you would not be able make alot of other synth. However unlike all other crafts fishing does not effect the 60 cap sub craft rule so I would call it a lesser craft.

And every 100 fisherman in the game would probably call you a lesser person.

lol don't get me wrong I envy you fishermen, but what i mean is fishing is in a league of it own and not connected to the other 6 crafts. Therefore making it a lesser craft to all the others because it is in a league of it own.

I understand what you're trying to say, but I think it would be more accurate to call it simply a different craft. Simply because saying "lesser" doesn't really accurately describe how difficult it is to skill-up fishing lol.

Yea just like we shouldn't call retards retards because they are just "different".

Fishing isn't a craft.

Cooking could be considered a craft, but it will still get picked last for dodge ball.

I agree, fishing and cooking should be called "skills" not "crafts". Unfortunately, they're all on the same menu.

The term lesser is what I was getting at. But you caught my drift, so it's all good.

And I'm not exactly a veteran fisherman. Only 32 so far. Ironically, about a month or two ago I had written a post basically saying "fishing is what I do when I don't know what I want to do next and am just bored". Two months later, I'm hooked... wtf... :P

Let's see, what makes a craft in this game? You take arbitrarily chosen items, combine them in the right manner, and push a button. If you're lucky the server will spit out a random number deeming that your combination of items and button-pushing warrants a skillup. Fishing is slightly different in that items are rod and bait rather than crystal and mats, but it's the same stupid shit otherwise. Whether you're staring at a fishing pole or staring at synth animation, it's all the same shit at the end of the day- a way to pay the bills.

The whole "craft rivalry" thing is stupid. No one craft is any better or more useful than another. The only reason crafts with big-money +1's are more respected is because everyone wants e-peen stroking for cranking out some rare uber gear with their John Hancock on it.

The problem with fishing is that your level really doesn't matter much, except for a few fish that aren't overly important. About the only useful fish that's kinda hard to catch without a higher lvl is Black Sole, but I'm sure the bots that all the lvl 1 fishermen use just ignore the fishing process anyway so it's a moot point. If S-E made your skill actually matter, fishing would be a whole different ballgame. As is, it's pointless to level, which pisses me off since I'm lvl 79 fishing and a lvl 1 fishing bot can catch the same shit I can.

What craft rivalry? Respected crafters understand that they can spend "X" amount of time making money, compared to a fisherman who would spend "X times X" amount of time to make the same amount of money.

Also I've never spent guild points for the crystal to sign items...that doesn't make me any more money.

Do you have any experience with fishing, or are you just talking?

Because I've been making very good money with fishing lately. And like I said, I'm only 32. I could not make this kind of profit with any of my other crafts at 32, and I was doing it from 21 to 30.

Now I'm at a dry not so profitable stage again, but you can bet when I need gil I'll be back to what I was doing a week ago.

Just talking. But your point about the level ranges is why Fishing is not a craft. It requires little investment aside from bait and a rod and a few light crystals. It's more like farming.

Yes, the only investment is time. It is like farming. Very, very easygoing, slow relaxing, profitable farming.

Actually, if you'd like to compare it to crafting, it would be like taking a craft from 1 to whatever using the same exact fire crystal and the same exact materials. I've seriously used the same two fishing lures and rod for the last 15 levels. lmao

And you can never get enough rusty leggings!

fishing is more of a skill (a very profitable and good skill)then a craft; it like choco digging, which most believe has invisible skill lvl. However cooking is a craft in every since of the word. You have farm mats., you have lvl to get to better items, and you use crystals in it (which you don't in fishing).

I agree, skill is definitely a better term for fishing than craft. Now if only they'd make it impossible to catch fish far above your skill level. >< I guess they made it more difficult to catch certain fish without Lu Shang's, but if you have a couple million gil to spare you can pick up one of them without completing the quest anyway.

I don't however, see how cooking doesn't meet the definition of craft. But whatever, to each their own.

Because people who do it believe farming materials is what makes a craft.

You can make money in cooking without farming materials. How does farming or not farming materials make something a craft or not anyway?

Oh and farming mats makes any craft more profitable, just because you're probably too lazy to farm doesn't make it a bad idea. :)
