DADT repealed!

Glad this has passed, but can't stand it when dinosaurs like John McCain come out and say it was a "sad day" because it got repealed.

Sad day for whom?

This guy said he would consider repealing provided a study was done that recommended it. The study was done and it recommended the repeal.

He said that the study would need to be analyzed before he would consider it. It was analyzed and it STILL recommended the repeal.

He said studies don't count and that if the top brass in the military said it should be repealed, then it should be. On February 20, 2010 they did just that. They went to his committee room and said that policy needed to be changed.

McCain voted against the repeal today and calls it a "sad day." The man needs to either retire or remember that this is the 21st century. Able men and women regardless of race who wish to serve should be able to by their choice regardless of their preference in who they sleep with. They don't have to be straight to shoot straight.

Already said, but about damn time.

All this bullshit about "affecting operational readiness" is just that. Bullshit.

Sexual orientation has never factored into any operation my squadron has ever done and for the old coots that are adamantly opposing the reversal on the ban need to be put out of office. Not because of this specifically, but because we need openminded thinkers in office.

This is good news, not just in its own right, but in that it'll pave the way for more to come. Once gays are openly fighting for the country, they'll have a lot more power to get those other rights like marriage. Once experts discover that butt-sex in the bunkers doesn't increase 1,000%, they'll be more likely to allow women into currently restricted combat positions as well. This should have many repercussions - all positive.

While I'm happy dadt is gone I wish Dc could pass a bill without all the other crap in it. Just more of an example of what is wrong with our process.

No system is perfect, 95% of people are just happy this got passed period.

Can I ask why the fuck it matters? Why does sexual preference matter when you're in the service? It's not like gays were segregated into separate corps lead by white men. Seriously, why take up such mundane issues? Why does everyone want to be treated equally while still expecting to be treated like a special case? Equality in any society is a farce. You're going out to do a job and doing a job it doesn't matter if you like to lay with another man. All that matters is if you do your damn job.

A lot of people aren't worried that buttsex will increase. They word it in the following way:

"The draft will return with a vengeance and out of necessity. What young man wants to voluntarily join an outfit that will force him to shower naked with males who have a sexual interest in him and just might molest him while he sleeps in his bunk? ".

Quite sad how strong the bigotry is. Apparently, openly gay men will rape and molest other straight men. As such, every openly gay man is a rapist. This is very advanced and true logic, because every straight man rapes and molests women, so the same most hold true for gays, right?!

I always found it amusing that the U.S. military on one hand would that this would hurt morale and fighting effectiveness, while on the other hand extolling to the martial prowess of the Roman legions, the Spartan phalanxes, and the like. I guess someone forgot to tell them about the Sacred Band.

Honestly I hope it stays this way. DADT being such a hot topic is getting annoying. I mean really all it appears to be is a tool for politicians to win votes.

DADT wasn't a bad bill at the time, but I'm very glad that they finally repealed it.

Apparently the US military are unaware that the Roman Empire fell apart once homosexuality became illegal because of Christianity.

Can they un-repeal it?

Briefly skimmed over the OP article, but I'm under the impression that Congress passed a law repealing it and Obama signed it into effect (which is how Obama wanted it to happen IIRC). I believe if DADT wants to be reinstated, Congress would have to pass another law and whoever is in office would have to sign it back into effect. So it is possible, but the way society is changing, I don't think that'll happen.

Someone will have to verify/refute that though.

Lets face it there's no need for the bill any longer.

It's more of an issue if someone losses a career over sexual preferences 'getting out', even by means of an angry ex. You know?

It's an archaic method that I suppose, as you say Lucki, was good at the time. But there's just no need for it anymore.

Now everyone can expect to get there asses covered when it matters the most, and the nicer the ass...

It matters (mattered) because not everyone is agreeable and sees it that way. While it isn't executed the same as racial segregation, the old school, intolerant bastards are so hung up on having things be "right" and "pure" that they bring up the same arguments from when blacks started to serve. "Decreases combat efficiency" "Lowers morale" "Causes discomfort between soldiers". This is all political bullshit.

You're completely right, but not everyon in the world is as agreeable as you are.

So glad it finally was repealed. Now let's get some other shit ended. Like the drug war which has ruined Mexico and other countries, increased gang violence and such here, wastes government money on putting people away for doing drugs (hurting no one) in their private life, and more crap the drug war does. Or, perhaps continuing in the equal rights, let's pass marriage rights for all people :) Or how about ending the illegalization of Prostitution where poor women are being raped and abused and can't go to police cause then they'll be arrested for being prostitutes. Or how about the hypocritical anti-gambling law considering we allow gambling through wall street basically (and let's face it, life in general can be seen as a big gamble every day). Want moar change plz!
