Did you play at all? I wouldn't compare it to Boarderlands(2) at all other than the fact that you are playing a shooter with rpg elements. I mean, that's about the jist of the similarities. I guess if anything it might be close, if BL was a mmo and hundreds of thousands of people were all playing it at once together. I'm not sure what you mean by nickle and dime, as the only thing you have to pay for is the game itself. Mine's nearly paid off, and will be in a few days once I get my paycheck. You don't have to buy anything off the cash shop. It's there if you want the options and considering they haven't actually done anything as far as additional content yet, who's to say what you will have to pay for and what you'll get merely as a patched game update. I might even blow some cash on the shop as some of the armor sets do look pretty cool. But I think I'll wait and see. There have been some neat costume unlocks that have been granted just by doing side and story quests, and a few options to be found in certain vendors.
Yeah, I played it enough for my my "don't want" sensor to kick in, which wasn't really long at all. It may be something more than I feel it is, but really, it'd have to be spectacular to pull me in from MH and PSO2 right now, and spectacular it is far from. I spent pretty much 2 hours thinking, "eh, I'd rather spend my time playing BLands if I'm in the mood for something like this."
On the nickle and dime front, they haven't been bashful at all about this. You pay $60 for the base game and then after that there will be DLC, Season Passes, and microtransactions. Instead of picking one model or another, they're going with all of them, minus the flat rate fee, fully embracing the idea that your typical console gamers love their DLC more than base game content. So basically, if they sneeze on the game, you're going to pay for it, you'll be lucky if they don't charge for friggin' patches from what I gather. I wouldn't have brought that up if they hadn't already discussed it.
I want to pull this out separately:
You don't have to buy anything off the cash shop. It's there if you want the options
I'm going to tell you man, in all of my years in playing games with a cash shop, there have been very, very, very few that didn't find some way to make them just flat out necessary or a means to overpower. PSO2 and GW2 are the only games I have ever seen, ever, where a cash shop is utterly worthless towards gameplay. However, look at the models for these games; a completely free client (PSO2), a non-intrusive cash shop, free, frequent updates, and above average support. Things that typically do not come from companies who are nickle and diming their customers with DLC DLC DLC DLC DLC mindsets. DLC is a plague that needs to go away, and let me humor for a minute that it should exist; it has no place, none, in an MMO.
But hey man, that's just my feelings about it. If you're having fun and don't mind the pay scheme, that's boss, I hope you dig the hell out of it for years to come. Me, it's just not my cup of tea and I'm not all too sure I want to give money to Trion Worlds period at this point. It could be too that I've just been burned for the last time with an MMORPG, and still a bit salty. TERA's instituting a cash shop into a game I paid a monthly fee to play, stuffing event items in it and turning the event items from permanent (in all their Asian versions) to 30 days in the western clients (unless you bought the permanent unlock out of the cash shop)... I haven't played that game in a very, very long time and I still want to kick the shit out of everyone (even the secretary) that works at En Masse.
