Multi-Plat Defiance

Well, Defiance will do it.

If you're looking for a free Fantasy MMO, I highly suggest TERA as it is completely free to play now and pretty impressive for a game that could just have as easily stayed pay to play. Looks great, fun and engaging battle mechanics and a good story (well, what I've played of it anyway was good).

I actually played Tera for a bit when it was subscription based. I didn't like the controls, felt clunky to me.

Did you play at all? I wouldn't compare it to Boarderlands(2) at all other than the fact that you are playing a shooter with rpg elements. I mean, that's about the jist of the similarities. I guess if anything it might be close, if BL was a mmo and hundreds of thousands of people were all playing it at once together. I'm not sure what you mean by nickle and dime, as the only thing you have to pay for is the game itself. Mine's nearly paid off, and will be in a few days once I get my paycheck. You don't have to buy anything off the cash shop. It's there if you want the options and considering they haven't actually done anything as far as additional content yet, who's to say what you will have to pay for and what you'll get merely as a patched game update. I might even blow some cash on the shop as some of the armor sets do look pretty cool. But I think I'll wait and see. There have been some neat costume unlocks that have been granted just by doing side and story quests, and a few options to be found in certain vendors.

Yeah, I played it enough for my my "don't want" sensor to kick in, which wasn't really long at all. It may be something more than I feel it is, but really, it'd have to be spectacular to pull me in from MH and PSO2 right now, and spectacular it is far from. I spent pretty much 2 hours thinking, "eh, I'd rather spend my time playing BLands if I'm in the mood for something like this."

On the nickle and dime front, they haven't been bashful at all about this. You pay $60 for the base game and then after that there will be DLC, Season Passes, and microtransactions. Instead of picking one model or another, they're going with all of them, minus the flat rate fee, fully embracing the idea that your typical console gamers love their DLC more than base game content. So basically, if they sneeze on the game, you're going to pay for it, you'll be lucky if they don't charge for friggin' patches from what I gather. I wouldn't have brought that up if they hadn't already discussed it.

I want to pull this out separately:

You don't have to buy anything off the cash shop. It's there if you want the options

I'm going to tell you man, in all of my years in playing games with a cash shop, there have been very, very, very few that didn't find some way to make them just flat out necessary or a means to overpower. PSO2 and GW2 are the only games I have ever seen, ever, where a cash shop is utterly worthless towards gameplay. However, look at the models for these games; a completely free client (PSO2), a non-intrusive cash shop, free, frequent updates, and above average support. Things that typically do not come from companies who are nickle and diming their customers with DLC DLC DLC DLC DLC mindsets. DLC is a plague that needs to go away, and let me humor for a minute that it should exist; it has no place, none, in an MMO.

But hey man, that's just my feelings about it. If you're having fun and don't mind the pay scheme, that's boss, I hope you dig the hell out of it for years to come. Me, it's just not my cup of tea and I'm not all too sure I want to give money to Trion Worlds period at this point. It could be too that I've just been burned for the last time with an MMORPG, and still a bit salty. TERA's instituting a cash shop into a game I paid a monthly fee to play, stuffing event items in it and turning the event items from permanent (in all their Asian versions) to 30 days in the western clients (unless you bought the permanent unlock out of the cash shop)... I haven't played that game in a very, very long time and I still want to kick the shit out of everyone (even the secretary) that works at En Masse.

Hmm, Well I sorta see your point about the money. Though I still say the cash shop items are not 'must have' items, even with Tera you do not have to buy a single thing in order to enjoy the game in full.

Also I don't know how long I'll be playing Defiance. I'd like it to be for a decent amount of time, since I will be playing it with a lot of my local friends. It's just something we do. Usually when a big MMO comes out that everyone is interested in we all get it and play it together. This has it's ups and downs, since there's no telling how long some of my friends might stick with a game. When SW:TOR came out everyone was into it, and we got a lot accomplished then slowly some stopped playing to where it was pretty much just myself. Then BL2 came out and everyone was excited and loved the game and we tried to get 4 of us together to play when we could, sometimes it was just 2 or 3 of us but it was still fun. We beat the game several times on different toons, but no one ever hit the level cap before it seems like their interest died out. (which sucks, because I really wanted to get my toons to 50 but the game was just more fun when I could play with them) Same thing with Tera, though I still am having fun with the game I don't play it much anymore because no one else out of my friends is right now. And so here we are with Defiance coming up and my buddies are looking forward to it, I am too after playing last weekend since I actually had a pretty good amount of fun.

At the moment though, I'm all over some Bioshock Infinite. Hopefully I can have it beat before next Tuesday.

Today is the day.. though I won't be playing much until tomorrow.. *sad face*

If there are server choices, let me know which one you are on. I will probably pick it up this weekend.

Multiplat game from Trion Worlds? Meh...

There is no specific server. It's kind of like how Champions Online is, basically sharded. Luckily I was able to get my name; Ecks. Today I just had time to log in, get to the base and do two side quests, still at just 50 Ego rating. I've gotta work tonight. Tomorrow I'll be gaming it up though.

I wasn't sure how much local hype there'd be for the game in my town, but there were 3 other dudes at the Mall this morning waiting for GameStop to open so they could get their copies.

I gotta say, I think it had a relatively good launch day. I managed to get on and make my toon with 0 problems at about noon yesterday and didn't encounter any issues at all for the hour or so I played before hitting the sack.

Hmm, so is anyone else playing? I thought there was someone from here, but I can't seem to find that post or perhaps it was on some other section of the site. My character name is Ecks, just post what your name is so I know to accept your friend request or to send one to you.

Right now I play with about 4 other friends, though we're all at different stages of the game and different EGO ratings. Two of my friends are already in the 400's range. Did a co-op mission, which the closest thing I can relate them to is they are a lot like doing dungeons, an instanced area with it's own little story and a final boss at the end. I was pretty impressed, even though out of the 4 people that went through it, 2 were my friends and 1 was a stranger that got randomly queued in with us since our original 4th friend somehow got kicked out of the group. The new person was in the 700 ego rating and while they were doing a fair amount of damage because their weapons were far better, me and the other low end friend were still doing consistent damage to not feel completely useless. I like that. Basically anyone can group with anyone to do these things and you get a lot of exp out of them as well as possible loot drops. The boss battle was actually pretty fun and had a simple if not easy mechanic (though he was pretty damn hard, and huge). I'm sure most all of the co-op missions will be something like this one was. Which isn't bad as I and my friends had a fun time of it. It's a good diversion from the normal side missions, main missions and episode missions that you do in the open world.

Let me tell you though, the episode missions alone are pretty awesome. The main missions are generally pretty cool and lead up to an epic fight, but the episode missions (which feature characters from the upcoming show) have so far always felt a bit more epic. The normal side missions are pretty basic, some can be fairly long and complex while others are almost too simple. I don't view this as a bad thing, as it's nice to see variety in difficulty so you never really know what you're heading into.

Anyway, hit me up in-game. Chat system is kind of weird, and their auto-voice chat while in groups needs more fine tuning. I don't use the in-game voice chat, well none of my friends do actually, we decided to just make a steam group and use Steam voice chat during play as it's waaaay more effective and crisp.

You know, I have 5 friends playing it and a $20 GMG credit with a 25% off coupon to stack so I went ahead and got it; I'm around 640, I forget. I'm glad I gave it another shot as it's a whole lot of fun. That said, it's probably the worst effin' game I have ever played in my life. It's so bad I can't believe it was released in its current state. There are so many bugs, glitches, and complete lacks of oversight that it's such a wonder to behold. If it was not just so damn fun to run around and shoot things with an Infector or Flare Gun while grinding keys for gear that maybe, just maybe, will suck a little bit less than the gear i got two hours into the game (I'm a sucker for the loot grinds) - I'd feel like the biggest idiot in the history of idiots for saying to Trion that a product this bad is OK to release. Oh, and the chat system isn't weird at all, it's just broke, flat. out. broke.

I feel the place I have for it comes from the failures of Borderlands 2, in that, it wanted to tell me too much of a story I didn't want to hear; I just want to farm loot and that's all Defiance is about (no matter how shitty of a loot system it is). That said, it has gone and made me appreciate Borderlands 2 on a new level, since it's such a horrible effin' game (Defiance that is). So with that, I'm now splitting my non Monster Hunter time between the two.

No, if you detected any sarcasm there, you're wrong. I'm having a hell of a good time with the game but for me, there is a difference between a fun game and a good game.

Hmm, I'm struggling mighty hard to understand how you could possibly put 'failures' and 'Boarderlands 2' in the same sentence, and then complain about that game's story. Which was freaking amazingly awesome. The only problem with that game for me was that once I played through it once the only way it was truly fun to go through it multiple times was while playing with my friends. That's how it was for me. But I absolutely loved the story, the comedy and the unexpected twists.

Now for Defiance. It's far from perfect, I can definitely admit that. It also has a lot of problems that need to be fixed and according to the guys working on said problems, they are aware and working hard to fix the issues so that people can enjoy their game the way they intended it to be. On their list of things to fix was the chat system. It does work, it just doesn't work like it should, in fact local and party chat are about the only chats that actually function correctly. I have also got to say, I have been enjoying the main mission and episode mission storyline a lot.

Strid you are way ahead of me though. I'm only at about 385 or so. Haven't been able to play much due to work the last 4 days. But at least we can agree that the game is fun.

The jokes are funny for the first few hours and then they turn predictable and by the end, I was ready to punch Anthony Birch in the face for being an unfunny twit that has no business writing for anything past a short, retarded YouTube clip. Borderlands 1 was quick and painless to get through all the playthroughs and enjoy the loot grind (the only reason I play the game). Borderlands 2's story is just, aside from terrible, too. damn. long. If it had ended around the time of Blands 1, all fine, not for me, but I wont complain, but 2 is like the Energizer bunny. By the time I hit TVHM and warped out Sanctuary I had enough of, well, the entire game - haven't touched it since despite wanting to grind loot for a thousand+ hours like I did the first game.

The chat does not work for most people on the PC platform period. It's a matter of when I type something it gets derped into oblivion instead of put on screen, same with the others. The missions are alright, but I've just been skipping all the blah-blah since I can only here the word "schtako" (as well as their other made up words to substitute cursing) so many times before my eyes roll out of their sockets from how corny it all is. That they're all skippable, it's like they knew I was going to play the game and I like that.

Ayup, it's fun. I'm having a hard time staying off of it right now even. I figure it's worthless to play the game if my guns are going to keep cycling through stats (after putting in the time to get the stats I wanted). When the loot situations settle out, I'll be up for a ton more, but until then I'm -trying- to finish Blands 2 TVHM but I can't seem to keep it on for longer than a half hour or so.

I haven't put in too much time to get this far though. My friends and I just group up and all drive in separate directions until someone hits a random event that awards keys (some of them do not) then we warp to them; rinse and repeat. We figured out real quick that doing Arkfalls, while fun at first, is pointless right now. To spice it up we'll do the co-op maps which I really, really enjoy, but the constancy of always having things to do has made "progressing" (if you can call it that in this game) fast.
