PS3 Demon's Souls デモンズソウル

I want to play this again badly. I can't get enough. Soul level 95 I think I left off but I don't own it.

Me and my friend have been playing this. Man oh man is it ever challenging. It's like playing through an MMORPG solo. The gameplay is amazing though, and the level design is amazing. I love the art direction and style too. This is the first action RPG really done right, much better than Elder Scrolls or Fable in terms of gameplay.

But DAMN is it ever hard. For me and my buddy that makes it just perfect. I can think of a few people who love Fable and Elder Scrolls that would just love this game but I doubt they could handle the difficulty. You need more than skill too, you need the willingness to lose an hour of your time and shrug it off and keep playing.

Note: Your deaths will never be cheap. You may get your ass whooped because you were overconfident or you screwed up or just weren't fast enough and good enough but you won't get killed cheap.

Def a tough game. The only boss I've managed to one shot so far was the Spider in 2-2 or whatever. I've wiped, in some cases multiple times, to every other boss and I'm not even halfway through the game yet. Timing is everything and stamina management makes that timing real tough in certain areas. I also very much enjoy the fact that there is no pause button to bail you out if your brain doesn't work as fast as it needs to in order to react to any given situation.

This game is $ for the hardcore gamer and probably a nightmare for those with little patience. I find myself getting frustrated at times (especially in certain spots where slight video lag comes into play) but my drive to beat it keeps me going back for more punishment. My roommate wouldn't even look at this game because he says he wouldn't be able to deal with it lol

But it definitely engages you more because of the difficulty and the penalties for failure. How many times playing MW2 or Uncharted 2 have we all just screwed around and tried to force our way past rough areas by figuring out a pattern by where we live and where we die. It's just sort of lazy auto piloting that will eventually get you to the next checkpoint.

In this game I get actually frightened for my character. I am cautious and frequently fall back to the nexus to keep my ass alive. Even the little bad guys are dangerous enough that I have to keep focused at all points. Absolutely the only thing comparable is playing an MMORPG, only the gameplay is much tighter and faster than any online RPG out today. I'd love this game as a fully realized online RPG, not necessarily an MMO, but just making the Nexus online and the ability to join up with others through there and go through in a hunting party.

I also love the blood splatters and message system. At one point I got to the top of a staircase, read the message that said "behind you", and I turned around to see an arrow flying at my head. A quick dodge and it sailed past me. Me and my buddy were laughing our asses off.

Blood splatters are great too. You get to actually see how other players have died and often that information is enough to save your own life. It's also good for a laugh some times if they carelessly run off a cliff.

Really? About 99% of the blood spatters I've seen are from idiots doing stupid things or they don't help out, like running off a very obvious cliff or they just show the guy fighting something that doesn't give much information. I'm very dubious about the worth of the blood spatters at this point, because it seems like only the people who suck are those who die doing things that are obvious to kill you. There's been a few useful ones, but they are few and very far between.

I don't even waste my time watching bloodsplatters anymore. As you pointed out, it's mostly just retards running straight and then suddenly dropping dead.

Messages can be real helpful though.

I love watching blood spatters just to see the hilarious ways people can die.
I saw one near the beginning of 2-2 where it looked like someone was fighting some of the miners. He rolls to one side, rolling right off the cliff to his death.
Also, a lot of the spatters of people running off cliffs are usually people who are trying to get into soul form/darken their world.

It's not so much watching it that I find useful, rather the location of it. When I see a blood splatter on the floor and no cliffs around, I know there are bad guys up ahead. It's really cool and an excellent way to give people a heads up that danger lies ahead. At the same time you can't be dependent on it because they're very random and people don't always die to the hardest monster. It's definitely cool though.

So I kept Ostrava alive through all 3 stages, beat his black phantom in 1-4 and never received the mausoleum key. Is it still possible to get this somehow or am I SoL?

You sure you got him through 1-3? If you did, he should be sitting on the steps right before BP Ostrava.
So, I think you're SoL for this cycle.

I'm pretty sure I got him in 1-3. I've read that it can bug out though and the key can actually disappear from my inventory. I coulda sworn I had it at one point but it isn't there anymore.

If I did miss him, is there any way to go back and find the key somewhere?

This really sucks as I'm finding out it means I can't get that Demonbrand sword this run through :| I've been playing it pretty casually so a whole 'nother playthrough is a long ways off for me.

It's really easy to screw yourself and miss something in this game. I'm pretty sure everyone had to go back through a playthrough and retrieve something at some point.

Yeah so I've heard. I hate missing stuff though even if I expect it.

you should go back and check the corner after the gate, he walks there after you open it for him, and sometimes when you talk to him it wont register so you have to do it again.
