I'm lvl 52 Blu and my Blue magic is capped at 163. I go to Gusgen Mines last night to try and learn Self-Destruct from bombs and after about 4-5 hours and some 50 bombs later, I have yet to learn the spell. The bombs in this area only use Berserk and Self-Destruct and from what I've read, they're supposed to use Self-Destruct often. I think this is horseshit because last night they used Berserk 3-5 times every fight. Since they're using Berserk that many times, it should tell you that I'm not having any problems feeding them TP. I'm not saying that the bombs aren't using Self-Destruct, I'm just saying that after 50 or so kills you'd think I should have learned the spell by now.

I've had the same problem with learning some other spells as well. I always make sure that my blue magic is capped and that I'm at the appropriate level to learn the spell before I go hunting it. Do I just have shitty luck or is there something else I need to be doing to make it easier to learn these spells?

Dare I say that the learning process has been nerfed and we just don't know it?

bad luck, trust me i spent a good evening and the following morning with a friend trying to learn filamented hold.

something that I can't quite say is confirmed but I learned a few of my spells from notorious monters on the first try with their abilities.

Try learning your spell from Bomb King and see what happens.

I've learned Self-Destruct from him that way and as well as Refueling from Odqan(although much more elusive than your ordinary nm)

I helped a BLU friend of mine get Self Destruct from the bombs in Garlaige. Only took 5 bombs to learn it, though he also had his Magus Bazubands to help him, too. I suppose it all depends on how soon you wish to learn it. ^^; By the way, he was around Lv.61 and I was as WHM71 when we went down there. If you go to Garlaige, take Lv.70+ assistance with you.

I've learnt Bludgeon and pollen while messing around. In my eyes those 2 are the only spells I'll EVER need to do BLU/BST to 75. Any other spell is just a luxury. This would be like a gimp BST/WHM hahaha...

I'm gonna solo to 75 next (after DRK) using those 2 spells and then go back and learn them ... with capped BLU skill + AF hands it should be slightly easier? Haha. I'll learn whatever else is on the way, but I won't go out of my way to learn them.

/dance

.... anyway

Unless the spell is essential, and if you're having difficulty, skip the spell and come back to it later when you're stronger and a few levels higher. It should prove less painful overall.

Although I believe Self-Destruct is one of the spells used to create Auto Refresh? I forget...

it is used to create auto-refresh, although I'm not sure why you would go out of the way to level to 75 just using those spells pollen soft caps fairly soon and wont keep up.

you would slow down your exp/hr a lot by not getting crucial spells and setting time aside to get it and just relying on the sub.

headbutt(duh)
soporific/sheepsong
wild carrot then magic fruit
refueling
zephyr mantle
pineconebomb(incredibly useful)

lots of others to list, when you learn spells go for the weakest mobs possible and spare the trouble, use wikipedia and go to the bestiary for the family to find the easiest ones, saves a lot of trouble and increases survivability...

true, i've read it and used it a couple of times, the info is assorted in one spot on wiki you have to use a few searches so this sight is a few steps shorter of reaching the same end.

I feel it should mention nms, I have a strong affinity to believe they increase the chances of greatly if not guarranteeing the ability to learn the desired spell

My EXP can only go as fast as what my pet can output, hence my dependance on the subjob weighs at roughly 90%, I can't go spamming spells, it would never work. This is all tried and tested already (at lower levels), I am extremely precise on what I do.

Myrrh: That site kicks ass. Much better than wiki, although it's a bit off it's an IP address rather than a site name... made me curious before I clicked on it but I figured since I'm at work fucking up my PC can't do me no harm.

Saying that, I did randomly bump into 2 BLUs in Jugner Forest trying to learn Pinecone Bomb. They were both dead when I came across them, I raised them and they told me what happened, I decided to help. Lets put it this way, the next hour hunting down treants WAS ABSOLUTELY PAINFUL. I was bored out of my mind but they seemed so nice I decided I didn't want to abandom them until they've learned it.

I guess it's all luck, eh?

Duddits: You can try higher level bombs, as the game tends to make it the more risk you carry out (fighting higher level bombs) the more chance they'll use self destruct. Although you will probably not survive it ... :/

Thanks for the input guys and I'll definitely check out the link that Myrrh provided. I've been using the Hunting Grounds guide from wiki which does have some inaccuracies. For example, Magic Fruit. It says that the spell can be soloed starting in the low 40's but you can't learn it until at least 53. How can you solo the spell in the low 40's if you can't even learn it until 53?

I guess my shitty luck in real life is spilling over into the game. Pinecone Bomb wasn't too much of a problem for me but looking for the treants in Jugner was. I got the spell after killing about 5-6 of them. The spells I've had the most trouble with so far are Geist Wall, Jet Stream, Blank Gaze, MP Drainkiss, Blood Saber, Sickle Slash and now Self-Destruct. I thought Wild Carrot was going to be the same way but thanks to the Goblin's Rarab in Bibiki Bay I was able to get it with minimal difficulties.

If parties still do it anymore, you can learn Sickle Slash while EXPing in the tree =)

As mentioned before, you are having a string of bad luck. The hardest spell for me to learn all the way to 75 was cocoon. I spent 5-6 hours trying to learn that one for some reason and was ready to quit blu then and there. I still have 10 spells left to learn, but overall it hasn't been too bad learning the spells. The AF body and gloves help a lot when you get there.

You guys sound more lucky then me when I was getting some spells <_< It took me a whole weekend to learn Wild Carrot. And some others which were just as long but I forgot which spells they were lol

I'm glad I'm not the only one who sometimes has problems learning spells. It's kinda funny seeing the difficulties people are having with Pollen. That was the very first spell I learned and I got it on the 2nd kill. Cocoon I got on the first kill :P

oh yeah spent about 8 hours there...and it's a worthless spell

still cool as hell to cast though!

I plan on getting all the spells. Don't care if they're useless. It's my own "needs to be 100% complete" habit. Also, still trying to learn death Ray <_<;

have fun learning refueling

I got incredibly lucky that's all I'll say

Wow, I learned that one on the first mob soloed in Ranguemont Pass. Sounds like SE gives you at least one bastard spell to learn for each blue mage.

replace that with about 2-3 each ten levels, I haven't bothered to go back and learn ice break yet, nearly punched my monitor before getting filamented hold
