Difficulty in learning spells

My recommendation is to get those spells which you see yourself actually using until you hit 56, and then go back with the Bazubands and learn the rest that you skipped.

At that point you'll learn them more quickly, and be able to handle the mobs much more easily as well.

I noticed a trend when it comes to learning blu. I'll go 1/1~1/5 for about 3-5 spells, then I go about 1/70+ <_<;

The worst i've gotten is like 1/20 for self destruct

I've learnt Bludgeon and pollen while messing around. In my eyes those 2 are the only spells I'll EVER need to do BLU/BST to 75. Any other spell is just a luxury. This would be like a gimp BST/WHM hahaha...

I'm gonna solo to 75 next (after DRK) using those 2 spells and then go back and learn them ... with capped BLU skill + AF hands it should be slightly easier? Haha. I'll learn whatever else is on the way, but I won't go out of my way to learn them.

/dance

.... anyway

Unless the spell is essential, and if you're having difficulty, skip the spell and come back to it later when you're stronger and a few levels higher. It should prove less painful overall.

Although I believe Self-Destruct is one of the spells used to create Auto Refresh? I forget...
Have fun soloing the long way... If you want to solo BLU to 75, goblin pets are your friends until 70.

EDIT: It took me 6hr+ after constantly killing clusters in mount blm to learn refueling. And to get Self-Destruct, I remember it taking a while in Gusgen Mines too. What I did was I aggroed as many bombs as I could, used DEF food, cocoon and what have you, let them smack me around until they blew up. If I needed to heal, I'd use that AOE drain or self cure (we only had cures from /whm or pollen back in those days!)

Redshift: I will sub /BST to solo, it will work for me =p, in my eyes it's a gimp THF/BST (which I've soloed to 75). ^^

Bludgeon = Sneak Attack style attack (it'll do 100~ damage, which is all I need)
Pollen = Blood Bolt

All I'm missing is Flee, but I'm sure I'll pick up crap along the way to help me finish the mob.

Finally got Self-Destruct Saturday night after a total of 8+ hours working on it. Since I was waiting to do Promys I also got Ice Break, Cold Wave, and Filamented Hold (got that one on the first kill. Don't hate me Khid...lol).

Radiant Breath has become the latest thorn in my side to learn, 3+ hours spent in Rivierne Site B, capped blu skill merits, no spell yet.

I was 1/1 on Ungur ;/

Also 1/1 Body Slam off the wotg mission 7 Dragon earlier ;D

i'm saving to learn radiant breath when I unlock drg and can solo it on blue mage, which i could probrably do now but I wanna do it at 60

Shame shame, those aren't the only 2 spells, lol. You forgot cocoon, which is to /blu what uts is to /nin (+50% def no cap).

Edit: misread, thought you said BST/BLU. But yeah, you were probably joking, but bludgeon pretty much sucks once you get sickle slash as /thf in party, and probably frenetic rip solo.

Thanks for the input guys and I'll definitely check out the link that Myrrh provided. I've been using the Hunting Grounds guide from wiki which does have some inaccuracies. For example, Magic Fruit. It says that the spell can be soloed starting in the low 40's but you can't learn it until at least 53. How can you solo the spell in the low 40's if you can't even learn it until 53?

I guess my shitty luck in real life is spilling over into the game. Pinecone Bomb wasn't too much of a problem for me but looking for the treants in Jugner was. I got the spell after killing about 5-6 of them. The spells I've had the most trouble with so far are Geist Wall, Jet Stream, Blank Gaze, MP Drainkiss, Blood Saber, Sickle Slash and now Self-Destruct. I thought Wild Carrot was going to be the same way but thanks to the Goblin's Rarab in Bibiki Bay I was able to get it with minimal difficulties.

Pre 60 (or was it 50?) you can learn spells roughly 10-15 lvls before you can use, w/o af. I learned Exhuviation (lv75) at lvl 60 when it was released. Magic Fruit is 58 if I remember, so I think 45 or so would be a safe lvl, barring how well you can kill the opo's at that lvl.

Spells are fairly random from what I've seen. It took me 2 trips at ~6hours each to learn Spinal Cleave, which is a "break weapon" spell. Those btw, are the worst to learn. Random chance to break weapons, even if you are good at it, and then random chance to learn. As to Death Ray, I used to MB it at the end of my solo skillchains, think it did roughly 200 dmg on average, bring my solo SCs total dmg to like 400+ at the time.

It may sound twisted, but I enjoyed learning spells, at least when I was able to solo. It was cool to learn the behaviors of different mobs, not to mention seeing what you were capable of soloing on the job. You can sometimes effect what move the mob will use next, or at least the chance at it happening. Bulking up on defense seemed to get taurs to use Frightful Roar more, and using the spell in parties seemed to make the crawlers spam cocoon more. To keep bees from using final sting, you couldn't hit them fast, then give them tp, you had to feed them TP slowly from the start (barehanded, then turn your back and just let them hit you for a while when they got too low).

Maybe try dropping the bombs hp fast, while still allowing it enough hp to feed it TP? That may help to trigger Self-Destruct more. Also, mobs will burn TP more often while below I think 10% hp? Before that it's random, sometimes they will wait til they have 300TP to use.

If I didn't have to go through COP again, I would probably lvl BLU on another character, learning spells was some of the best times I had on the job.

for weapon breaking there's a little knack to it stand about a 45 degree angle to the left side of the mob for qutrub. You'd have to time the ws as they raise the sword or when they lower it(not easy lol, but you learn to anticipate).

Lamia is another ballpark and a bit more awkward since they hold their weapon all the way on their right side then raise it up and swing. Good luck there is all i can really say...

Another thing about blue spells, some spells that don't have much of a use can build up with your stats and be useful overtime. The only example I can think of atm is poison breath, starts out weak, not a bad spell but it hits for about 100ish dd along with 40 damage from poison. It helps when you fight monsters that use that all too annoying PD or invincible(poison breath helped when I did fomors saturday) and of course naturally evasive mobs. Costs about 22mp as well which isn't bad from bludgeon's 16mp for 150-200dd.

Death Ray could follow the same path, 49mp at lower levels is a bit much at higher maybe it gains more usefulness since it's an amorph spell I assume you used this against colibri to get higher end numbers?

Finally got Self-Destruct last Saturday after about another hour or two of killing bombs in Gusgen. Yesterday was a good day. I picked up a total of 8 spells. Hecatomb Wave, Magic Fruit, Light of Penance, Death Scissors, Dimensional Death, Spiral Spin, Maelstrom and Eyes On Me. Magic Fruit gave me a little trouble but it wasn't too bad. I thought Light of Penance would be a bitch but I hadn't killed any Tonberry's yet so I didn't have to do the quest to erase hate in case they used Everyone's Grudge (I took zero damage when it was used...lol). I got the spell on the 2nd kill.

Trying to get the last two spells I need to finish off the list. Any suggestions on Radiant Breath and Asuran Claws?

find someone that hasn't unlocked drg or yourself if you haven't and try the wyvren nm, it's soloable by a 60 job and maybe lower pending job

asuran claws can only be learned from lobisons going by sources on it, vt-it mobs so a bit of manpower needed there

Also Lobisons only use Asuran Claws when upright. Lol, it's the only spell I don't have atm. I learned Radiant Breath in Riverne Site B01 (w/e it's called, the higher capped area).

I'm gonna go bst/blu now that I hit 60 bst and I'll have wild carrot. We'll see how it works.

actually /blu is a pretty good sub for bst I've done it sparaginly 30+ but I preferred /whm or /nin better

it's definitely workable and stacking the chr+ spells and mp+ is always nice then killer effects if you're at the right camp
