Where are you getting Racism from? I don't really remember saying anything about race

That's what Shaun was banned for, I think that's what he's talking about.

Shaun was banned for lots of things. Last I remember that two month ban was for telling the OP that it was a good thing that his friend killed himself.

Good of you to repeat my point. It does go both ways, so it shouldn't adhere to just one of them.

If someone “Kind or timid” posts on the FB and gets reamed, do they deserve it? That’s kind of what the FB is about. I hate the flameboard and think very little of people who think they are justified to belittle another human being. But it is what the flamboard allows and is a QCDN allows.

This rule is adhered to and this rule is backed up.

Now rethink your rationale. What lines have been crossed on both sides?

Maybe everyone should be banned because they all gave bad advice.

The kid tried to kill himself. He should be be an institution for his own protection. For all we know his parents will try and solve the problem on their own and he'll finish himself off, while the OP could have gone right to the authorities and been like, "My friend tried to kill himself, please help him."

That's what I'd do if a friend of mine tried to kill themself. Maybe they'd hate me for it but they'd live.

Which is why all this internet group help think is total bullshit. It's all about support not about decent advice and now we have to worry that even if we do give some decent advice we'll just get banned for it.

"This forums is for real life related posts. If you don't care about the real life of others, don't read it."

That's what disclaimers are for, if you want to be a dick then you are subject to the punishment for being a dick. You have no one to blame but yourself when you get smacked for it.

He got perma banned for something else, not for the suicide topic. Sorry, you lose. But yes you can undo the 2 month ban, but it won't do much, now will it? Don't be a smart-ass.
he got two weeks for what he said. It was changed to permanent for him comming back during the ban, and for a couple other things. The initial two weeks was indeed for what he said regarding the suicide.

This sorta nullifies the thread a little. Perma-ban aside, posting RL issues on any forum, even the actual forum for RL stuff, is still puts the OP at risk of hearing things they don't want to hear. Roadkill posted what ended up being interpreted by the mods as "insensative", but isn't that an opinion?

It's not really that difficult to figure out what's insensitive or not...

I don't doubt that it was insensative. But he at least explained his position in his post, rather then just being a prick and leaving it that way. I didn't mean things that are obviously offensive or insensitive, but rather things that aren't as obvious as that. Roadkill's post was an extreme, and a good example can be made of it as to how far someone can go before mod action is taken.

Right, but the reason he got banned was from the temp ban from that.../circle?

Yeah, it's indirectly related. But it's not the exact reason. And in that regard that's what Artem is saying.

Think the big question here is if he deserved to be temp. banned...he aknowledged what he did was wrong and apologized for it (something that's actually quite rare to see).

I don't see why you keep comparing what happened with shaun and here. The extent was completely different. And in that case OP was upset, here he wasn't.

And I'm sorry, if you cut yourself run out into -30 temperature and still type on msn the next day. It's far from suicide attempt. Sure they guy needs some medical attention and psychiatrist, I agree. I don't agree with what OP did, cause like firestreak said, that won't help anything. I don't really think the guy tried to suicide cut himself, because if you cut your wrist veins, you'll be unable to move in 10 minutes, and you will be dead soon after.

It sounds more like a plea of attention which is what roadkill was referring with his emo comment. Maybe the kid thought, the girl would come back to him out of pity, I don't know. What I know is he didn't try to kill himself, because you can't really mess up killing yourself by cutting your veins, only medical attention can stop that once its done.

That is not even important, the point is that mods take every little issue and blow it out of proportion and ban/remove everything that even slightly like the precedent.

No, I don't agree with what road posted or how he went about his opinion, but he did nothing wrong in doing so.

Let's ban everyone for being a carebear and agreeing with the wrong decision (read firestreak's explanation, he already explained), they contributed about as much to that post as did road.

Care Bear Countdown, 4, 3, 2, 1
Who's that comin' from somewhere up in the sky?
Moving fast and bright as a firefly
Just when you think the trouble's gonna pounce
Who's gonna be there when it really counts?
Do the Care Bear Countdown
And send a wish out through the air
Just do the Care Bear Countdown
When you need them they'll be there
Don't be afraid when trouble's brewin' in your heart
If you can dream just send a wish out in the dark
And do the Care Bear's Countdown 5, 4, 3, 2, 1

I don't really think you should use insensativity as ground for temp-banning on the RL forums. Its not like the FB, where (as BoF will tell you) flaming someones RL is grounds for mod action. The RL forums are just that; forums for real life stuff. Suicide is a very touchy issue in itself, but it goes back to no matter what, posting ANYTHING in the RL forums is opening yourself up for peoples opinions, no matter what they are.

So, was what Roadkill said insensitive? Sure.
Was it grounds for banning? I don't think so.

Real life, sure. But there's more to real life than people cutting themselves and serious situations that need professional help as opposed to advice on a mmorpg message board.

If the board is going to turn into a hotbed where everyone gets offended because nobody is mature enough to take different(and often completely wrong) opinions in stride, just get rid of it. We should be focused on FFXI and should view anything else as a side-venue for the community.

Sure it's nice to see what people look like, hear what kind of things they have in common, hear their interests... being that they're the people we play with on the server. However we should never forget it's a secondary function to a FFXI board.

Next off, people who are easily offended are people who have issues of their own. For example I'll laugh at racist jokes even directed at me and not think a second over it. Why? Because I honestly don't believe the jokes have any truth to them, so i can laugh at the stereotype because to me it's all just bullshit.

Just like so many homophobes are so afraid of their own sexuality, so many overly sensitive people are afraid of their own demons.

That's just my take on the whole thing.

Actually, most completed suicides are preceded by failed attempts at suicide, which is why he should take it more seriously than simply a cry for attention - even if it possibly is that.

Also surprising how many families try to help a family member by covering up for them, especially if it's a potentional embarrassment. It's not really selfishness, rather they assume the person would prefer people not know about their suicide attempt because it could create a downward spiral.

Like for example at universities, you try and kill yourself and they will boot your ass out because they don't want that potential embarrassment, it's really disgusting. Which is why if you know someone tries to kill themselves, go straight to authority even if your friend wouldn't want you to.

As guilty as you might feel for betraying your friend's trust, you'll feel worse attending their funeral when you could have stopped it.

I didn't really mean that it isn't serious, but I didn't really say that. I do agree that proper actions should be taken. Telling on him to his parents wasn't exactly the right thing to do. Of course, I'm not sure taking it straight to the authorities is good, either. I think you should go to him as his best friend and talk to him and ask him to go see a doctor, and tell him you'll go with him. Tell him you'll be there every step of the way. You'd be amazed how willing people are to fix their problems when someone they trust is with them. If that doesn't work, take it to the authorities.
