Dissidia: Final Fantasy

You have a hard time reading full contects and like to read only the things to which you think you can give witty answers.
Don't you, skaw?

That's old though, they don't fuck up like that, btw, THOSE WERE JAPANESE translations into English, that wasn't, at least as I understand it, the english translating from japanese but the japanese translating into english. But I could be wrong :P I'm too lazy to care and check :P

But ya, that video was horrible, couldn't hear the voices well at all and meh music XD

Dubs are fine now, they've been good for awhile, and so many japanophiles don't like to admit it :P or they ignore that it wasn't just anime with poor voice acting but almost all cartoons pre-2000 or even late 1990s.

Oh no! They changed a Japanese joke that only 2% of the english speaking viewers will catch! DUBS ARE THE DEVIL!
This game has jokes?
Honestly, if people have such a big problem with this, they can go ahead and undub/fan translate. Nothing more exciting than MAGUS-SAMA.

How are you too lazy to remember Ted Woolsey?
Best translator of the 16-bit generation.

How about you learn to actually write what you've meant to. I'm guessing what I said is what you really meant, and since Marajade mentioned that it's possibly not what you meant, you're falling back on him to keep yourself from looking like a stereotypical weeaboo. Literal translations cannot be done all the time(or even most of the time,) or things start sounding awkward as hell. Get over your dub rage. They're never going to release a game scripted specifically for you and the rest of the GLORIOUS NIPPON minority, when writing for a general audience is the only way to be a success. You're just going to keep getting angry over words that don't alter the story in any significant way.

I'm pretty sure the discussion going on is dubbing in general. And yeah, there are games with references to Japanese pop culture that only Japanese players would get that get nixed when released outside of Japan.

I have trouble understanding this obsession of yours to label people by only reading the lines you want to read.

Seriously.

Now I am fully aware that a lot of things, especially references to culture and jokes can't be litterally translated from any language to english without the risk losing it's meaning or clue but with dubs a lot of the studios aren't even trying to find another way to say it in a way which does make sense.

So you know, I am just as critical about dubs done in my own language from whatever other language which is not limited to anime and games alone, so stick that GLORIOUS NIPPON comment of yours some place where no sun will ever shine.
I am not sorry for having a more critical view then you.
Maybe that view comes when you actually speak and understand more then one language and have actually translated on a professional basis yourself.

I really can't think of any anime/games that have jokes that are only references to their native land's culture atm, care to share one? And even if they did, pretty sure they are rewritten for translations cause it'd be stupid to leave em in anyways.

You must not watch a lot of Anime. There are a lot of puns, jokes, and cultural references in a decent amount of Animes. Not that I can tell you one specific joke off hand, but Gintama, just to name one, is a series littered with them. From time to time you'll see them in Naruto as well. One Piece, though I don't watch it that often, sneaks them in pretty often as well, especially puns.

And even if they did, pretty sure they are rewritten for translations cause it'd be stupid to leave em in anyways.

We know, it's already been said. Part of that discussion was of the opinion that when translated over OR "fixed" for the world, they often do it wrong. Take Naruto's "Dattebayo" for instance. I know I could do without hearin' the totally irrelevant, to "Dattebayo", "Believe it!" that litters the English language version.

Again, there really isn't a good reason to keep this up. It's an opinion that will differ between all of us. There is also no sense in callin' people names that prefer one side to the other. I'm sure there are a lot of "Japanophiles" out there but just because people prefer subs to dubs isn't enough to make them one.

I watch quite a bit, but most likely I just never notice when I watch subbed cause it's pointless. the times they do make references are during non-canon shit.. like at the end of some animes where the characters are acting outta character and I don't give two shits about that XD

And I personally get tired of hearing "dattebayo" from Naruto's japanese voice :P

btw, I never said Japanophile was an insult, I just meant it as someone who really loves Japan to a completely biased point :P it's fine though, we're all terribly biased in many ways.

That's the problem with words like that. No matter what you mean, it can be interpreted positively or negatively. The roots of which you put the word on display for was not positive, but used to try and pillar an opinion of your own. The main point is this, it wasn't a necessary input to get an opinion, of 100%, across. A proper way to have phrased what you said is this, "I think dubs have come a long way. I am happy with them more so now than ever and I do not get why others don't feel the same way, but hey, whatever floats their boat."

Thanks for the references Strid.

Personally I dispise Naruto though.

Even though they left the dvd versions pretty much uncut, some fun facts about Naruto alone straight from wikipedia.

In the American broadcast, references to alcohol, Japanese culture, sexual innuendo, and the appearance of blood and death were sometimes reduced for the broadcast, but left in the DVD editions.[40] Other networks make additional content edits apart from the edits done by Cartoon Network, such as Jetix's stricter censoring of blood, language, smoking and the like.

Then you think:
But it is ok to show naked titties in commercials.

And the cultural references aren't left out of the broadcast dub versions alone.

B: The "international" version bound to come out in Japan should these rumors of new things be true.

They're true. Downloaded the demo and played with it a bit. I noticed differences immediately. They changed one of Sephiroth's basic aerial HP moves, Promised Land (English name "Hell's Gate" for whatever reason.) Before the move went straight downward until he collided with something, you'd be rather lucky to hit anything. Now, however, you have the hold the square button down to plummet. Otherwise he'll do an explodey attack in midair.

My description probably sucks but basically it's a huge improvement to the move. Makes Sephiroth much more handy in his early levels.

They also changed the appearance of his Shadow Flare move. The appearance seems to be all that's different though. However that's hardly a mentionable "upgrade"...unless I'm missing something.

One more thing I observed, although it could just be the effect of equipment carried by the demo characters, if you attack immediately after blocking an attack, you'll enter "crit mode" temporarily and it's easy to Break your opponent.

I don't get why Warrior of Light isn't in the demo though, he's like the most basic one...

Demo's pretty badass. Only thing that bothers me is how damn emo Cloud is. Was he like this in the JP version?
I bet he was. Man, playing as him is depressing.

I like the demo. I'm assuming they only give you like a couple of moves? I dunno I'm trying to figure out how to use all of them, as opposed to just spamming one attack lol.

I don't think Cloud is that emo in the game..I mean some stuff is a lil bleh, but I don't find him to be like how he was in Advent Children

why the fuck does stupid ass shit like this? Fucking Tetsuya Nomura is a TERRIBLE director.. he basically made Cloud emo since KH cause he wanted to fucking appease the fans who wrote shitty fanfiction that made Cloud emo -_- instead of the original character who just didn't give a shit until the end where he started improving... bah.. fucking morons at SE need to send Nomura back to character drawing and leave personalities to others lol.

I nearly cringed when he said something like "No smiles for me." Really, is that necessary?
I enjoyed playing Onion Knight, but his brave damage is so bleh. Took me a good long while to take out the last two fights in the demo.
Am I doing something wrong? I want to like the character, but doesn't seem too useful.

I played the demo, but now I'm not so sure I'll buy it. The idea of playing as a taru and whipping Cloud's ass has appeal... as does playing as Squall and whipping Cloud's ass... or any character whipping Cloud's ass, but the demo felt like a plotless Crisis Core. Fighting games don't usually excite the pleasure centers of my brain, so this isn't a huge disappointment, but I wanted to like it more.

The thing about Onion Knight is he's pretty much the ultimate master of chaining HP attacks from Braves. That is, if you connect one of his swift Brave moves he can immediately chain into an HP attack. Warrior of Light and Tidus also have a great deal of these types of moves. Squall has none.

Also, due to his speed, it's ever so slightly easier to grab the EX Cores. He has a good deal of both long-ranged magic attacks as well as close-range quick combos.

For getting higher damage, there are two ways to enter what I like to call "Crit Mode", where you'll score a succession of critical hits (BRV based) for a certain period of time. One way to do this is to hit an enemy with a BRV attack, right after you've dealt HP damage to them. In the time it takes for your BRV to recover and reach your normal amount, all your hits will be criticals.

The other way is easy, critical hit rate is raised exponentially in EX Mode.

Also, possibly a new addition to the English version which I mentioned before, you might be able to land criticals while an enemy is "staggering", easiest way is right after guarding against their attack.

As for his "emo-ness", there are a few specific things I remember vaguely about Cloud's story in Dissidia.

Spoiler:
It's basically the old cliche of wondering why he has to fight for Cosmos' sake, and his conflicts over inadvertently becoming Sephiroth's puppet and whatnot. He develops a sort of friendship with Frioniel (Firion). The other characters consider him cool headed and well composed, but he doesn't feel that way.

...Something like that.

In other news, Bartz and Exdeath's gameplay exhibitions are out now. I like Exdeath's voice but Bartz sounds a little unconvincing. Oh well.

In the next part of the final fantasy 7 compilation, it would be nice if cloud would take on a more confident attitude. at the end of advent children, he was supposedly over his guilt and doubts so they really should develop him into a confident leader who has seen it all.
