See, he failed to subcategorize(or maybe I just failed to assume). Like with the apple one, he should have said "all retarded rich white people", or with the marijuana one, he should have said "all cool white people", or Mos Def - "all trend slave wiggers". Or then again, maybe it is just me. I find that highly unlikely though, my sense of humor is so much better than all of yours.

Hurray, you're a nonconformist!

I'm not really picking on Excaliburs post, because knowing him he wasn't 100% serious anyway. I just think the times where it made you a rebel and gave you rights to call yourself awesome are loooong gone. But there are a lot of people who stand by the fact that since they smoke, get drunk, or shoot up that they are cultural badasses, and I don't get it.

Seriously, how does smoking dope make you cool? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'm glad your self reflection looks so great to you, I just fail to see how a singular action like numbing your brain can make you a badass. My old coworker smoked a lot of dope, like, every day three times a day, until he went home and beat his 8 year old to near death and got thrown in jail. But... he's cool because he smoked pot, amirite? (/gross and unfair exaggeration)

My question is, how does relying on a mind altering drug make you a better, "cooler" person? Assholes are still assholes when they are high, so yeah, I really don't get it.

I would simply argue that having to rely on these drugs to relax and have a good time, kind of makes you weak. I know that sounds like a flame, but I honestly don't mean it to be.

Let me know what you guys think.

All the cool kids are doing, duh.

Unfortunately, thats just the world we live in today.

Jesse Jackson came to my high school last week and spoke to the whole student body, he asked "Anyone who knows of a person, who has tried Marijuana, Alcohol, or any other drug, please stand up."

Nearly everybody got up out of their seats.

Personally I thought it was fucking hilarious, but now that I look at the big picture, it's really kinda sad.

Well, I'm a firm believer that as long as your aren't affecting anyone else, you should be allowed to do whatever makes you happy. Be that smoking a bowl at your house with some friends and eating a whole bag of doritos, or masturbating to pictures of Bea Arthur on the internet, I mean, both of them are victimless activities (aside from the perpetrator). I also believe penalties should be strict and swift when you do begin to adversely affect someone else, no doubt.

I just fail to see how it makes you a generally "cool" person. I'd like to see if someone can rationalise this thought process for me.

or masturbating to pictures of Bea Arthur on the internet

im sorry, but bea gets me so fucking hot i just cant help myself

This is simliar to do tricks on skateboard without protection on, is consider making you "cool" not to have protection to protect your brain or any important parts of your body.

I never get that... damaging your "male area", broken bones, damaging your brain makes you cool and get respect? Is it worth it?

Allow me.

The way I see it is that just the fact that you do drugs doesn't make you cool, I've known some real assholes that did drugs.
The thing is, if you do drugs, it means you're not some right-wing holier-than-though stuck up asshole. It means you're open minded, willing to try new things, and you don't look down on other people for doing the same. I also find that the drug person is most fun to have a serious conversation with, about life, politics, the world. I find that they're smarter than your average American these days, and I don't mean book smarts, or even street smarts. I mean spiritually smarter, smarter about life and the world and their place in it. They know who they are and what they believe and aren't afraid to stand up for it like so many trend slave pussies in this country these days.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that someone who doesn't do drugs can't be all these things, or that someone who does do drugs definately is all these things 100% of the time, it's just much much more likely. I will say that the drug person does have something that the sober person definately does not, I don't know exactly what it is, but I find that quality in people very attractive.

It also kind of depends on the drugs they do. Cracked out inner city Detroit negros aren't exactly the most enlightened. Psychedelic's man, the hippies both old and modern alike, those are some cool people. I've also met alot of meth/heroin junkies that were pretty chill too, in kind of a different way though. I've also met some tweakers I wanted to punch in the face...it just depends on the individual.

You see, this is what I'm talking about. The sober person is so much more ignorant than someone with first hand experience.

Having tried mushrooms, alcohol etc., I can tell you (although I bet you already know), the difference between them and alcohol is huge. And I'm not speaking to you Excal, I'm speaking to everyone that haven't tried them. You can't compare them to alcohol at all.

In no way does it make you smarter at all. You might FEEL smarter and more poetic and philosophic while under influence of it, but you're not. The effect of various substances is different. On mushrooms, for example, it makes the brain sort of speed up, and allows several parts of the brain to work at once independent of each other. This can cause you to feel more philosophic, but really, it doesn't. As the trip comes in waves, the brain almost restarts at the beginning of a new trip, causing the brain to sort of work in circles. Due to the brain working rapidly, it also gives a feeling that time moves more slowly. Everything becomes very interesting temporarily, as the brain have a hard time to focus on any one particular thing due to all parts of the brain working independent of each other.

This is very different from alcohol. I've tried a lot of things due to being open-minded, and trying things out as a kind of experiment to see the effects of it. Yes, stupid, I know. From personal experience, everything past marijuana is just idiotic to take. It does in no way make you cool. I'd say Marijuana also doesn't make you and cool, nor alcohol, but alcohol is so common nowadays that you can't say alcohol makes you uncool, as everyone consumes it. And alcohol is so weak compared to most other mind-altering substances that it doesn't matter.

I refuse to ever try Meth/Cocaine/Heroine, though. Those drugs are just retarded to ever use. And I'm not ever trying any drug except alcohol ever again. It in no way makes you smarter or more philosophic. It just makes you THINK you are.

And Excalibur, its not more likely that people that smoke marijuana etc. are more philosophic, smarter and more aware of themselves spiritually. I think its more a case of other people lying to themselves and others in an attempt to fit in, while these people stick to their group of friends and be themselves.

No, no I'm pretty positive it can make you smarter. I'm not talking about smarter while you're under the influence, I'm talking about smarter when you're sober.

Isn't that what I just said?

I wasn't aware that they did...

Assholes are still assholes when they are high, so yeah, I really don't get it.
And cool people are sill cool people when they're high. Just like assholes are still assholes after taking a pain pill. Are you thinking that everyone who gets intoxicated in some way is just trying to be cooler than everyone else? Because that's a grossly inaccurate generalization.

I just smoke because it is fun. I don't do it as an escape. Speaking of smoking i got my new spoon today. It is ever so pretty. I also don't drink. I don't think im a badass because i smoke though. I think i am just a college kid.

No, it doesn't make you smarter. As I said, it only makes an illusion of making you smarter. Since it allows each part of the b rain to work separate of each other, it allows you to think a lot. But you also can't focus on any one specific thing. This gives you a lot of ideas, none which is necessarily true.

No, what you said is that it makes them smarter. What I said is that they become honest.

Not only are they not healthy for you (this goes for alcohol too), it can also completely ruin your life. What if your work finds out, they won't be very happy, for example. My aunt work with these people on a daily basis, she knows just how bad things can get and how unhealthy they are for you. Especially considering she were a drug addict and seller for 10 years. My cousin's father were also a drug addict before he came to Sweden, from the age of 13 to 18. My uncle died from being a drug addict, which was one of the turning points for my aunt.

All three of these people regret ever taking any kind of drugs, and don't even drink alcohol now. Granted, the third one can't, as he's dead. They're illegal, while alcohol isn't, for a reason.

Read my post. It is in reference to those that do believe that it does automatically make you a "cool" person.

Thats not what I said at all. Did you even read my post? I'm talking about some people who automatically think they are hot shit just because they like to smoke up. And other people who say things like "Oh, he smokes pot, so he must be cool."

I understand why people get high, and I'm not against it, nor do I give a shit, really. But I live in a part of the country where, if you sat down ten random people in a room and told the ones who got high to raise thier hands, 8 people would do so, and then snicker to themselves about it.

There was a time in this country, when if you smoked dope it was a lot more about giving the "man" the finger, doing what you wanted and showing people that you are an easy going, enlightened person, and that you just didn't care what other people thought of you. Today, so many people smoke, it's kind of a joke to think it makes you somehow unique and badass.

I'll put it this way: It's like the gay pride people, who always wear rainbow wrist bands, tight mesh shirts and short shorts, with a saying on the shirt with a gay pride saying, and rainbow stickers everywhere.... YEAH, we fucking get it! Your Gay! Who cares!

It's the same thing with the people who walk around with a pot leaf shirt, or something that says 4:20 on it, and always talk about how they can't wait to get home to smoke a blunt. We fucking get it, and don't give a shit! It aint cool anymore! It's just normal!

You've brought up a good point Ex. That people who smoke/do drugs are more open minded and tend to be smarter. But my boyfriend says the same thing about people who smoke cigarettes. Does it make it true? As you stated, no, it doesn't. It just means the people who you smoke with are the people you sit around and talk to and are more likely to have an intellectual conversation with rather than someone who isn't smoking or hasn't done drugs.

Again, I'm not trying to pick out any one person, Ex just brings up good arguments. ^_^ And yes, it does very much depend on the individual.

Which is what I said. However, it does not mean they actually are more intelligent and smarter. It just means they are true to themselves and talk to others about what they think and feel more, as opposed to many others that carefully chose their words to not become an outsider or considered a nerd/geek.

I fail to see the difference. That however is only one aspect of "smarter".

That's just self-expression. It's the exact same thing as wearing a Halo shirt and talking about how much you like it and can't wait to get home and play. For alot of potheads, pot is something they really love, it's something they're interested in and want to know alot about. It's like a hobby, the same as video games or music or football.

It just means the people who you smoke with are the people you sit around and talk to and are more likely to have an intellectual conversation with rather than someone who isn't smoking or hasn't done drugs.

While it is more likely, that's not entirely what I'm talking about. I've known plenty of right-wing Christian conservatives, my parents are two of the biggest I know. I've talked to and listened to many of their friends, and I can honestly say that I've never met one as smart as some of my drug friends. Let me clarify one more time by saying that I'm not saying they aren't out there(a sober smart person), I'm just saying they're much fewer. The ratio is just in favor of someone who does do drugs.

Either that, or the drugs makes you unable to see the difference. Honesty != smarter

If that is even the least bit true, I'd be more worried about the general level of intelligence of the American people, rather then the negative effect of drugs. Personally I think you' don't understand our arguments.
