Do Mind Altering Drugs Make You Cool?

I think what bugs me the most is when people comment on the effects of something they have never personally experienced. I think that's stupidity.... IMO.

I got into an argument with someone ingame who had never tried a mere toke of pot once but had the audacity to pretty much say I and every other person who had ever inhaled pot had done more damage to themselves than an alcoholic would inflict to themselves drinking... lmao. K...ugh..

People can argue whether or not smoking pot is good, bad, or indifferent all day, since both sides have good and bad points.

The aim of this discussion was about the "brotherhood" you seemingly join while you are a smoker, and where the hell it comes from.

There's a brotherhood? Lmao. More or less you become part of the more educated population. Those that do in fact know more based on experience than just book knowledge which is limited unfortunately.

Simple as, being street smart is someone who's been around longer to endure more, observe more, experience more.

Responsible use at the appropriate time is about as 'smart' are you're going to get while smoking that shit. Reality check there Excalibur.

As for being cool?...Seriously? Trippyhippy said it best.

This really sounds more like a bash really than an answer, are the people that you personally know that do drugs that are smarter than sober people based on a environmental, national, or global scale?

"...Anyone with an open mind that does drugs."

I could interpret that as one person thinking that everyone does drugs or one person is the world and what they do is representative of it. Giving benefit of the doubt and saying that it's not what you meant.

National, because I don't know many people from other countries. Don't take it as a bash, I've got more respect for you in this thread than anyone else here.

Are we stupid because we don't agree with you? Should we just say drugs are awesome and excal rocks in order for you not consider us stupid anymore or in the first place? Maybe we should all bown down and kiss your ass. Sorry, lol, but a different view on things isn't always that bad, maybe it's your close-mindedness that feeds that self-righteous attitude and keeps you from listening to others that follow their own beat.

I think Trippy has had better posts in the past on his own philosophy, which was much more intelligent and wise than your own, that I rated up for because I was ignorant of the fact that so many other possibilities exist for the drug. I do not agree, but it was an educated response. Another thing I learned that just because you use X does not mean you use Y and Z because of personal experiences, I admit that I lumped them together, which was wrong. Your posts just sound like you're talking out of your ass and you're spewing names in case we think otherwise.

Try giving the other side a bit of respect before you call us idiots and then try to preach your view; if you don't it just turns them off at the sight of the insult and consider you, ignorant. I don't think the drugs were resposnible for that(maybe they furthered it?), I think that's just your personality. I say this because my friends who were druggies did not doubt me for my view and respected it as I did the same to them. Hell, maybe you 'need' more pot to reach that conclusion or true meditation.

I'm not calling anyone stupid other than Baja and Arc. The reason I started in with the name calling with them is because they can't read. They started making accusastions and presenting arguments that have no basis in anywhere. They started saying things I had already said, things I agree with. How am I supposed to argue with that?

After weighing I think it's somewhat believable because I knew a friend in FFXI that was pot and graduated with a 3.5 GPA. Parrallels of the same circumstance, no?
I smoked pot for the last two years of highschool and I graduated with a 3.8. It would have been a 4.0 but I dicked around way too much my freshman year. Did buckling down have anything to do with the pot? Hell no, it had absolutely nothing to do with it. Pot is a seperate entity from almost all other aspect of my life.

Who writes the books on drugs? Is it too far-fetched to say that people that may have used them in the past but cleaned up or a psycologist(sp?) taking care of multiple clients with some sort of drug usuage background couldn't apply? You make it seem like there's a distinction of race or some sort.
I have no idea where you're coming from or what you're talking about. ...I think books on drugs are better written by people who have done them...does that answer your question?

Excal, when you become 'smart', wise, or gain intelligence...where is it stored? You're sacrificing potential storage, important faculties, etc. for a quicker insight that may or may not happen when you can go without and think by yourself or with others of the likes that will happen without detriment.
Eh, I don't use all my braincells anyway, I can afford to sacrifice a few.

Finally religion, I personally believe that morals are relatively easy to achieve without either it or drugs, although the basic morals are derived from religion regardless, so it's just a loop. Why are drugs capable of becoming moral? What was your thought process that led you to the conclusion? It is very easy to take a part of a book and memorize it instead of reading a whole book(parrallel to morals and religous text). It's not that hard to sit back and think, if it is possible to reach a deep understanding then what use is there for drugs?

Well, you can not do drugs and learn all those things(usually the hard way, through experience), or you can do drugs and learn all those things the easy way(by just realizing them), and have a fucking blast while you're doing it.

The reason I created this thread, was because all too often I have seen this generalization made by people who smoke.

When I made that comment I wasn't serious. I'd say about 60% of everything I say here at qcdn(and irl for that matter) is sarcasim/bullshit I pull straight from my ass. Think of me as qcdn's Colbert, I pretend like I'm serious, but no one in their right mind would truly believe in some of the things we say. People just take me waay too seriously on this forum. I think it's kind of funny actually, that's why I keep comin back. ;)

Yeah, because it's impossible for them to know the effects unless they've undergone it themselves.

I've never been shot, but I'm pretty sure it hurts and you'll go into shock and die if you lose enough blood.

Saying you shouldn't have an opinion until you've tried drugs is pretty stupid and it's just a smoke screen for "I don't really have any defense so I'll try to ignore what they're saying." It's not like the information is hard to get or anything, especially with the really vocal druggies who try to recruit everyone to do drugs with them.

Yeah, because it's impossible for them to know the effects unless they've undergone it themselves.

You've obviously never done drugs because otherwise you would know that yes, it is impossible for you to know the effects without having done it yourself. You can describe drugs with words like "light-bodied feelings, dizzy, confused, etc." but you will never know what one feels like until you feel it for yourself.

He doesn't do pot, he does Cough Syrup. Get it right D:

I've never drank cough syrup to get my dxm in my life, that shit is way too nasty. I swallow pills(which are also really fuckin nasty and have completely ruined mtn dew for me, but not as bad as chuggin syrup).

Answer: No

I think it's funny though, that Excal talks about thinking that pot makes people more open-minded, yet he's the most close-minded person that QCDN has, lol.

And just exactly how did you come to that conclusion?

Is that better than sniffing Sharpies?

Or in Myrrh's case, smokin' some BBC. :spiteful:

Well, I'd assume that if someone who's done it tells you what it's like that they're not lying. =P One could also simply compare it to something the person may have actually done, i.e. Nitrous Oxide or something (I know that's a bad example, but all the same)

I thought so, which is exactly what I also stated in my first post (that you were not being serious). But I quoted you, because it reflected a view I had been seeing a lot recently by people I work with, or go to school with.

This is the view I'm talking about. I fail to see how you automatically become part of a more educated population. Educated on what, exactly? Again, I'm not trying to attack anyone here, but it boggles my mind how this view continues to stand as acceptable... even to pot smokers.

I'll site two examples of what I'm talking about and why it confuses me when I next get a chance.

You can try explaining it to someone, but my point is you can't really just imagine what it feels like based on a description, you can try, but most of the time you'll be wrong. The only way to know what a drug is truly like is to do it for yourself.
Yeah, some drugs feel similiar and are comparable with each other, but there again, you know what it feels like because you've felt it.

I know you knew, it just seems like no one else does.

Because in this thread alone, you're talking down to people who don't approve of drugs, whatever their reasons may be. In the music thread, you scoff at people who listen to different music than you, lol.

If you're "cool," you're "cool." It's not because you do drugs, or don't do drugs. If you define yourself by the drugs you do, then others will define you by the drugs you do, but that neither makes you "cool", nor "uncool". As it is, "cool" is an extremely ambiguous term and has little meaning, at least to me. I believe that those kids that claim they, or anyone else, are "cool" due to the fact that they smoke drugs, are just lacking any better values to define what makes a person "cool."

Thanks, do you have proof that this is on a national scope?

If you wish to prove a point, you must address the opposition with respect, I believe what they said was more or less on target, imo. It just means you rephrase your opinion to better illustrate a point.

I was asking to consider that people of those 'groups' I mentioned could have written those books when you said education can't teach about drugs. Education is something you have to actively strive for, everything in school isn't enough for education; of course by that respect a person can't learn everything, hence different methods of philosophy.

Eh, I don't use all my braincells anyway, I can afford to sacrifice a few.

Touche' if this doesn't bother you, but it's a big concern and this sheds doubt over the gain of knowledge from pot overtime versus the side-effects

Well, you can not do drugs and learn all those things(usually the hard way, through experience), or you can do drugs and learn all those things the easy way(by just realizing them), and have a fucking blast while you're doing it.

A little family motto "Experience is the greatest and harshest teacher"

It's better to experience things first hand in life to learn better, rather than take the easy way out, the easy way with a lot of similar circumstances leads to a more shallow comprehension and in the case of marijuana can potentially reduce faculties. Assuming marijuana provides that small benifit.

Ie. Reading a book would be better than Sparknoting it, the former provides more information than the latter.

You're the one claiming that drugs make you smarter and that only people with open minds use drugs; but me and arc are the stupid ones? I'm starting to think that you're high when you post; because while to yourself you might seem intelligent and that you make posts make sense, in reality you're not. We're not misreading you, you're misreading yourself if you really think we're not responding.

You say drugs make you smarter, we say bullshit and ask for proof, you call us dumb for disagreeing with an entirely unvalidated assertion that is completely against common sense. The only close-minded idiot here is you.

No, I haven't done drugs, because I've never felt the need to deaden my senses, escape from reality pharmaceutically, see surrealistic nonsensical visions, or just stare at a fucking frisbee for hours on end. Doesn't mean I can't know what the effects are, just like I know what the effects of being shot are without actually going through it. Unless you're saying all drug users are liars, then I'll admit that I'm wrong.

That is a very good way of putting it. I was hesitant to post something as philosophical as depth grammar vs surface grammar, but I think you hit the nail on the head Shyrra.

Edit- I can't rate you up again now. ;_; But I will soon!

Don't be a dickhead. Frisbees are fucking awesome.

Exc got it right there. Just because someone says "drugs feel like this..." doesn't necessarily make it true. I guess you could compare it to sex. You can never really get what the feeling is like until you have it. Sure you can jerk your rod or what not, but it isn't the same. That's kind of like someone telling you what drugs are like but unless you try them for yourself you'll never know.

Also a friend of mine who is a bigger druggie than I am (I've only done weed and a tiny bit of shrooms) finished AP physics with a 97 in the class. By this I'm trying to say that just because you do drugs doesn't mean you are going to lose braincells and become a tard, that is if you aren't a fag-mo and like OD or some shit. Some peoples minds act differently to drugs than others, maybe some people don't lose brain cells like others do.

And as for what I said by weed makes you smarter. Guess I didn't really put that as I had it in my mind. Just because you do drugs doesn't mean you are more knowledgeable. It just broadens your mind, allows you to more easily see things on different view points.

Also if their is someone here who is that much against drugs, I want you to do something for me. Go get all of your CDs, tapes, records, and throw them in the garbage, because chances are more than half of those artists were baked when they wrote those songs.

I could list quotes from this very thread showing excal as being obviously close minded, here is one example

I wouldn't say I immediately label a smoker I just met as cool just because they smoke, but I'm more likely to give them a chance than a non-smoker. If I meet a non-smoker I'm quicker to judge them as lame when they do/say something stupid than I am a smoker. You see what I'm tryin to say?
Judging by how he's using the word smart and what I think he's trying to say, I'm also gonna count him wrong on drugs making you smart as well. (btw look up words like insightful, and creative, and try to find a smarter word to use than smart)

Doing drugs should be a calculated risk (hopefully) for most people, like eating fast food, you're supposed to know it's bad for you, but say the short term good outweighs the bad. When you no longer believe they're bad for you, you're setting yourself up for big time problems in the future.

Also a friend of mine who is a bigger druggie than I am (I've only done weed and a tiny bit of shrooms) finished AP physics with a 97 in the class.
In the past week I've gone to exactly one class, and got drunk twice. I will probably be on the Dean's List again this semester. This in no way means alcohol and skipping classes makes you smart. Just like a druggie doing well in AP Physics means nothing about drugs. (Just the same I did the best out of my AP Physics class and that was before I drank, just to knock out the idea that the "smartest" tend to be druggies)
