Does this mean the end of FFXI?

"These things too shall pass", Wak.

People can't seriously be naive enough to think that a game can (or will) actually go on forever. For SE to continue generating (new) revenue, they have to continue innovating new games.

But as is the norm in SE's case, it'll just be a rehash of another game; probably an FFXI remake.

Nah, the'll just re-use the code from FFXI in Rapture.

Coming Soon To Rapture: Bynamis!

Coming Soon To Rapture: Schmalvage!

Oh shit hang on we gotta fix that dupe bug...

I lol'd at this guys post on BG about it. XD

fyi, from wikipedia.

In August 2005, Square Enix announced they had begun working on a new MMORPG, but neither confirmed nor denied that it is a sequel to Final Fantasy XI, or that it is Final Fantasy-related.[1] Hiromichi Tanaka, producer of the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI, stated in April 2006 that developers are working to make Rapture a worldwide release.[2] He announced in February 2007 that the game was being developed for the Xbox 360 and for personal computers running the Microsoft Windows Vista operating system. He also stated that it might also be brought to the PlayStation 3.[3] Square Enix announced at GDC 2008 that the new MMO will indeed target the Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and Windows operating system, and hinted that Mac and Linux clients are not out of question. [4] The game will utilize the Square Enix created graphics engine called Crystal Tools.

Also, I think this is old news?

FFXI won't die for atleast 2-3 more years. They still have to finish WoTG and they're adding those mini storyline things.

Why is is that every single time SE says or does anything..at all, people freak out and start getting worried that "ffxi is dying"? We already knew it's not as profitable as it used to be, but SE said a few months back that as long as we still play, the game will exist.. So in a financial report, we should look at the word "replace" from a financial stand point.. FFXI isn't making them the money it used to.. so they're putting a game in it's place.. to make them MORE money.. FFXI still makes them money..

It would be extremely stupid of them to just turn off the servers. The people who were pissed off about it wouldn't go to their other game. They'd just stop playing SE mmo's, because no other companies randomly turn off the servers when the game is going strong(decently strong). I feel like these days people are just looking for a reason to shout "omg ffxi iz dying" from the roof tops.

It won't end FFXI just like that, all the player hard earn item/gear/gil just gone in 1day? i doubt it, FFXI will continue to lived on, just maybe there will be very little new feature to be add on each couple of months

I hope it replaces FFXI. I'm getting tired of being addicted to this game and I don't have the patience to start up another MMORPG.

only time they will turn off the game is when there no money to be made. They will just stop upgrading the game if profitability becomes an issue and redirect thier resources. Why wouldnt they want to continue taking money off people when nothing is going into it except hardware(which wont get upgraded) and bandwidth.

That is whats awesome from a business perspective about these types of "services". One of the old companies I worked for would do just that, create a website app, charge a monthly fee, put zero resources towards it and collect. Besides the cost of initial creation the company really isnt out anything. I would assume SE would do something like that.

One thing is for certain, I will never play another MMORPG again. I'm sure others can agree with this.

That's what I've been telling everyone lol
Spent too much time on FFXI to play another MMORPG ~_~.

End of regular expansions and semi-regular updates probably, but they still have the downloadable mini-expansions coming among other updates.

EQ2 came out in 2004 and EQ is still played 10 years since it's release in 1999.
Rapture may not even be FF related, I doubt FFXI will be going anywhere anytime soon.

I wouldn't be surprised if SE made an all inclusive "POL Pass" that would save you a few bucks and allow you to play both FFXI and the new MMO. There are still 32 servers, not counting test. I am sure there will need to be at least 2, probably more, server merges before the game is in risk of shutting down.

Its designed to replace as their flagship MMO. As in, they`re not canning XI for Rapture, but more work will likely go into it.

I'm curious about it. Want to know if SE learned their lessons from XI and apply them to this new one.

Haha, SE learning.

Or SE will release Rapture and shut down FFXI and only say "Thanks for playing!"

Why do people think because SE is creating a new MMO, that they will shut down FFXI? lol. There are still plenty of people who play Everquest, long after the release of Everquest II. Put the inhaler away, and cancle the ambulance, your game is safe :P

Heck, if PSO for Dreamcast is still being run on private servers, I have no doubt that we still have a good 5-8 years to go.

I'll definetly play it. The most fun I've had with FF was my first job 1-75. It would be worth reliving that with a new game, and if it's good, even better.

If it is the end, I'll play their new MMO. Assuming of course, that they don't implement a mouse movement onry system... thats the major thing I hate about all these other MMOs. That and the interface, I think they practically all look the same. Maybe I just got too used to FFXI's UI :P
