well he could have just AFK melee'd (like many popular DD jobs do) and leeched off the efforts of others. but he didnt he contributed like a party member should. he wasnt trying to outshine anyone or trying to prove any huge point to make the world a better place for puppetmasters. he knew his limits and worked within them to the best of his ability. and the party was outstanding.
so i'll say it again: its not the job, its the player controlling them.
I seriously get a chill down my Spine when I see that statement Bolded. Either people that say that are fuckign morons, or they have never been in an EXP party ever in their fucking life...
How, in all your glorious ignorance does one just "AFK and leech in an exp party" What the fuck would a melee such as my self do in that case? Enguage the mob, get up out of my chair for 5 seconds come back weaponskill, maybe reposition to catch the mob if it's moving, then get up again for another 2 seconds to "AFK" just to come back and start in on the next mob? Seriously, gtfo with that shit.
To the topic on hand: Patience.
You took a job knowing the stigma attached to it. You are going to have to addapt to that job and play it based on the public's conception of that job, not yours. Because while you may thing the job is awesome, Others do not, and you are but 1 person amongst the 6 in a party. It's shitty, but it's true.
I have leveled Sam before the Patches, Drk before the Patches, and Thief before their Dagger boost. None of those jobs are really sought after. It's tough, and yes I complained a lot. But you get through it. Thief especially had a horribel stigma attached to it, and still does. No one takes the job serioiusly, except for people that Play thief. That's the point; people are ignorant; but they are also your greatest asset. Sure you can say you're the best Pup, Thf, Drg, etc... But does it matter when there's a particular job that needs to be done that can be filled in by a more qualified applicant? DO you want some kind of Affirmative action for Drgs and Pups? I mean c'mon, let's be realistic here. If you want to merit your jobs, you level a merit job, and exp on that to better suit your needs on other jobs. One of my biggest regrests was being so bull headed about trying to get my thief into merit parties. It's just not a merit job. Neither is Pup.
So one must ask: "What is a PuppetMaster?"
How does your friend like to play? Is he abotu blindly killing shit in a monotonous drone of death that is a merit party? Or does he prefere a more tactical approach to the game and want to be a little more active/experimental? These are the things you got to ask. because at the moment you're friend sounds like he's trying to pound a square peg into a round hole.
So now you ask: "What do I need to play the job how I like?"
For me, I love thief, and after the anguish of going through to 75 and trying to merit it, I realized, I hate meriting it. I would rather get the 20k - 30k an hour on my war and not wait 5 days for invites, merit my thief, and be happier playing thief how I would like to.
Thief is a much better job solo, and the best job duo. I found myself a close friend and all we do 90% of the time is duo shit. It's the way the job is, and that game dynamic works for us.
Samurai is the ultimate melee for stuff involving alliances. You are nearly 0 liability, you garner little to no TP to the mobs fought, and open the gates to damage for others in the group. the playstyle is not all too complex, and trust me I have tried everythign to make it so and failed. It's a moderately armored Black Mage that uses TP as a MP pool... Sure I can solo with it, but my options are limited. In a party, I am liability. The job doesn't do well in mixed company, if I want to play it in a merit party, I pretty much either have to gimp my self, or be a tampon and soak up the blood...
Dark Knight is easily the funnest job in the game. It's versatile, and easy to solo, you can farm for hours, if not days at a time. You can regenerate yourself on command, and you got an arsonal of abilities and equiptment at your disposal. It however is also not conducive to the merit/exp environment... And it sucks to duo. I like to think of Drk as my "Vacation job" it's where I go to just see the random shit that it does. No two mobs fought on Drk are ever the same. However, the option to Merit IS there, it's just not the best option.
Warrior is useless to me... I hate the job for most things and the stuff I like to use it for I don't like doing lol... I Hate meriting as a whole. It bores the shit out of me, but that's what I use my war for. Either that or I use it for missions and LS farming, when not on thief or Sam. It's and AMAZING job, it just doesn't match how I like to play.
Puppet Master is one of my hobby jobs. I level it when I got a day or two and I dont' want to deal with people. It's hard. It's a Tough job, but it's worth it. The Issue is that it's always stuck in that limbo of "Oh it would be cool if I could do _______." But it never cuts the mustard... The only way I truely had fun with pup, was with other pups.
And that TLDR ends with that:
Find your tribe.
As said before in other, and fewer words: Your solution lay in the hands of others. You either need to become one with society, lead society, or find those whom share your interests and ignore society.
