I've been a hardcore Doom fan since the first came out; played the games, played the expansions, made the levels, played the DEHackEd's, read the books (which is actually the origin of my name), so on and so forth. I just f_cking love the series, and everything involved with it. Haven't stopped playing it since actually, we regularly have LAN games of Doom Legacy and undoubtedly will for years to come.

After I watched the movie, I damn near cried my emo self to sleep. That movie was absolute crap; it had nothing to do with Doom at all, undoubtedly because the director they chose was the same guy responsible for the Resident Evil movies.

1. Mutated scientists & UAC employees are the antagonists.
What the hell is this crap? I went to that movie with full expectations of seeing at least one demon. I mean, these games were made around this very simple storyline: scientists discover a dimensional portal on Mars, they activate it, demons come pouring out. Humans in the immediate vicinity are either instantly ripped into itty bits of goo, or have their souls devoured and become zombies.

Then the movie steps in. Nope, scientists are mucking around with some dumbass DNA hooplah. Experiment goes wrong, their test subject freaks out and starts infecting people. Domino effect begins, and now there's an entire complex full of them. Dubya tee eff, mate? No demons, no portals, none of that stuff.

2. The Rock is Doomguy.

Talk about a shitty choice. They could have picked a lot of people, Kurt Russell probably being the best choice, but they had to grab the biggest bag of meat they could find and hope he ropes in some extra ratings. However, considering their choice of director, I can understand why these choices were made - the person responsible for hiring actors was a crack-smoking braindead piece of havarti who eats wood chips and shits thumbtacks.

3. Oh my dear bloody lord, Pinky the scientist.

For those who didn't read the books, there were two main protagonists who would name all the demons they encountered. Clydes, steam demons, raspberries, etc. The little pink demon with the erotically oversized mouth in-game was called a 'pinky'. Unfortunately enough, the developers of the movie decided to include a scientist who's last name was Pinky. Big gold star to the first person who figures out what he mutated into in the movie.

4. Destroyer.

The Rock leads an elite S.W.A.T.-like team into the complex to save the precious little scientists. Of course with a clique of gun-toting cigar-smoking badasses, everyone has to have a cool nickname. The Matrix did a good job of picking these. Doom sucked gonads. What do they call the black dude with no hair, a single facial expression regardless of his mood, and the gatling gun? Destroyer. Think about that. If you were leading a team of asskickers, would you ever want to call your buddy Destroyer? Say it out loud before you answer that. Hey Destroyer, wanna grab a beer later?

I'm one of those fanboys that was pissed off when they announced what they were doing with the script for this movie. As an action film, it did satisfactory at best. Special effects were pretty stellar, especially the BFG. But as a Doom movie? They totally f_cked that up.

They should have called it something else, like Spayce Warzzz Xtreme. Not only would it be fitting, but there'd be a lot less disappointed Doomers like myself.

edit: yes this movie came out a long-ass time ago. I was over it until recently, but now my fire's burning again. MUST SMASH BARTKOWIAK

Doom scared me when I was little.

I saw Doom when me and my girl went to my hometown... couple weeks ago.. we borrowed the movie from my mom..

like.. the only part of Doom that I actually saw in the movie.. was when it was in First Person view at the end..

otherwise... it didn't come up to my expectations just like you were saying..

The first-person scene was a nice touch, but now even that coudl save the movie from being complete crap. That was one of the worst movie adaptations I'd ever seen; although it was far better than the adaptations of the Bourne Identity, the Bourne Supremacy, and whenever the hell they make it, the Bourne Ultimatum.

I refused to go watch it based on the translation of Resident Evil to film.

OkOkOkOk, worth watching for Mila Jovavich (SP?) but very little else.

ADAPTATIONS DON'T WORK.

Yea I didn't really like how they made it the Bio research gone wrong deal. That is practically the theme to most horror movies with an inhuman creature. Either that or an alien. I can't even think of any movies that actually have demons in them aside from like Legend (which isn't even a horror movie). I guess maybe the American film industry shys away from stuff like that for some reason. When I first heard about Doom the movie coming out I thought it would be a really dark, atmopheric, scary kind of deal. But no...it was the bland biofreak and l33t team of guys with guns sent after one creature.

Aside from the obvious rape of anything resident evil in the two movies, I didn't think the second one was that bad. I dont know why we had this fancy new story, when anything w/ Leon would have ruled, but meh, hopefully the third will suck less.

And I liked Silent Hill. Don't get me wrong, it was slow as molasses that had been spilled on molasses, that had been nailed to the floor, but visually thought it was really cool.

Ooo... and Bloodrayne. No I'm just kidding, Bloodrayne sucked hard. Also, lolstreetfighter.

As for Doom, I didn't see it because my ass boss (my boss who is an ass, not the boss of my ass) ruined the ending for me.

Boss: You see that The Doom yet?
Our Hero: ::sigh:: Doom? No, I'm gonna wait til the dvd comes out.
Boss: Good flick. Lots of action, killing and such. Coulda used some tits though. (My boss is a classy guy, what can I say?)
Our Hero: Yeah I'm sure I'll see it eventually.
Boss: Man that ending though, where The Rock died... That was cool.
Our Hero: Remember that part when I told you I hadn't seen it?

I'm a fan of really bad movies that are great :) Doom is a running joke in my store, well, since I work in a video game store it's to be expected lol. We get the DVD traded in a lot and when it comes in I always exclaim:

"Whoa! We got Doom?"

I liked the movie for its action. Not so much the tagged on Doom name.

O_o;;; @ The Rock dropping F-bombs

You guys forgot about the Mortal Kombat adaption!!! That sucked too...

I hated this movie with pure hatred. No where in it did it live up to the expectations I had for it. lolz

Keerist, I forgot about that! I have to change my original vote. The FPS scene was, in my eyes, the worst part of the movie. It looked more like Doom3 than any other part of the movie, but they still did a horrible job on rendering that scene. Starship Troopers had better modeling than that, and that movie's like 100 years old.

Side note, I dont know why but I loved all the Resident Evil movies. I played a few of the games religiously, so seeing that big ugly dude that murmurs 'STARRRS............' all the time made me giddy.

Silent Hill, never played the game but that's gotta be one of my favorite horror flicks right now. I was on the edge of my seat for a lot of that.

Super geeks. Every last one of you.

Hey buddy, you're the one that plays an MMO RPG.

...

And what? You don't? Hey, I'll admit to some geekness, but you guys take it to another level.

Just play along smartass. Us nerds have to defend ourselves somehow, we need you to understand these methods will be lame and make no sense at all.

I sobbed the day the Doom movie came out. It's pretty damn sad that he couldn't even get Doom (of all things) right as a movie. The game itself practically hands you a finished movie script. He had a very short list of requirements to capture the plot and he got every damn one of them wrong.

(The following is meant to be read as though comedian, Louis Black were saying it)

1) Teleportation gone wrong.
2) Helspawns from Hell.
3) PINKY IS NOT SOME DOUCHEBAG IN A WHEEL CHAIR!!!

That idiot wasn't even going to have it take place on Mars until the fanbase ripped him a new one.

And wtf is up with the "Virus that makes people turn undead" ?! Yeah right, 'cause when I think of Doom, oh yeah, I think of Resident Evil in Space! >:(

Message to Hollywood: Stop making movies based on games. Knock off the "Well, it's my vision of the story" bullshit when the fans tell you you're wrong. Newsflash, retard: It's not your story OR your vision in the first place! If it was, then it wouldn't already have been thought of by someone else!!! Make it right, or don't make it at all. If it doesn't stand by itself as a movie, then HEY, don't make it a movie!

Doom really could have worked and worked well as a film. It's a damn shame, really. I don't even want to think what atrocity is going to come out of the Metroid movie.

</bitterness>

I'm not gonna cast a vote either way until we see ... well anything I guess. I have high hopes, but we'll see.

Slightly related side note:
You guys hear about Heath Ledger playing the Joker in next Batman?
