Alrighty, Dragoon is really the first melee job I've seriously leveled. I'm 64 right now, and I'm just really not sure what to be subbing. So I'm wondering and asking fellow Dragoons SAM or WAR? I've been mostly subbing SAM, because my WAR is only 31 (gimp sub ohnoez! yeah I just hate leveling WAR ;-; ). But I'm wondering if Berserk, Double Attack, and eventually Warcry is better then Hasso, Zanshin, Meditate, Saigon etc? Or if it would depend on the situation like exp parties vs eventual NM's/Sky/Sea etc.

Thank in advance for the advice.

Cap WAR and then level SAM and NIN.

when i played i subbed war majority of the time really depends on what your doing i guess.

SAM WAR NIN for offense

WHM BLU for defense/solo

have NIN and SAM at 37. WAR is really the only gimped up sub i have.

War sub gives you berserk, double-attack's and at 70 Warcry. I think War overall has a higher damage rate too than Sam sub. And meditate as a sub only gives you 60 tp I believe.

I'm subbing war all the way on my Drg. :)

I Sub sam on my drg but only because it's suicidal enough fighting something without zerk atm for me. having zerk is just inviting massive amounts of pain. I's still amke sure i had war leveled for the bigger fights if i could attack the monster for an extended period of time.

/WAR was always the powerhouse in my day, but with the 2H bonuses that /SAM gives might be pretty decent nowadays. Not sure though. I would still assume /WAR

QFT.

I went /sam 60+. You'll tank full time as /war, and still pull hate decently as /sam. With mediocre tanks you'll definately want /nin if your DRG is geared decently.

yes /war still wins pretty easily but /sam provides a ton more survivability well still providing very strong offensive bonuses rather than /nin which is purely defensive.

drg/blu is awsome for soloing

Yeah, I kind of figured that /SAM would be pretty good now with its offensive bonuses like Hasso, and its defensive bonuses from Seigan or whatever it is called. The things ya miss when you don't play anymore lol

I'd say you can probably still get away with /WAR until 70 or so. At that point it will really depend on the party setup and the camp, but after 70, /WAR is pretty much guaranteed suicide.

70-74 /SAM is a better bet for general use because you get Hasso to improve your DPS and boost WS damage a little.

Personally I swear by /NIN for parties at 75, but I'm also pretty much fully merited on DRG and my DPS gear is pretty well optimized, so /SAM pretty much means full time Seigan for me at Colibri. Pre merits /SAM is probably still better.

I guess in general I'd say it's still really important to have /WAR available to have that maximum output available to you but /SAM will do fine for the most part.

Also of course it depends on the party layouts etc but well that's going into more detail than I care to atm.

I thought this was a new food item ;; /disappointed.

Everyone is sayin /war over /sam, how different is drg from drk? Full time hasso, /sam > /war if your talking what does more damage. All /war gives is spike damage.

Double attack and Berserk every 3 out of 5 minutes, can prove better DoT.

Spike dmg is /THF.

And /SAM is preferred over /WAR for the same reason why MNK/NIN is preferred over MNK/WAR, survivability. That is once you get to 70+ and get Seigan. /NIN is the best once you hit 74+ in terms of survivability but offers nothing whatsover for a 2handers dmg. If you are willing to have Seigan up nearly full time over Hasso, /SAM offers the best mix of survivablity and offensive capabilities.

And it's debatable which puts out the most damage with /WAR and /SAM (full-time Hasso) but I would lean towards /WAR.

Was reading the thread out of curiosity. Seems with enmity merits, tanking will be inevitable for me on DRG.

Like everyone says, NIN offers nothing except survivability and cheap sneak/invis. SAM and WAR both offer damage increases, but SAM offers more damage mitigation than WAR by far. In the end, it comes down to which will offer the best exp/hr. As for sea, sky, etc. I think it comes down to what you'll be doing exactly. I recommend NIN for anything involving farming, it's usually safer that way in my opinion and farming is usually structured like meripos anyways. For anything else, I would imagine it depends entirely on the exact circumstances such as mob being fought, whether there is a SC, etc.

If you're DRG is equipped anything like your PLD, I don't think you'll have to worry.

Work up Scholar for a sub for Dragoon. I duo'd with hollie and he could drain for 220 HP against the fish peoples in SSG then his wyvern would cure him for another 350. Plus, Spirit taker to restore his MP w/ kirins pole equipped. Plus, I was whm/nin and wheeling thrust + black halo = lvl2 dark SC = Magic Burst aspir or drain so as to make yourself even nastier XD

Honestly, Hollie and I have duo'd the fucking world as Drg/(mage [whm, blu, rdm, or sch]) and whm/nin or blm. We were just shy of duo'in charby x.x lol if it wasn't 3AM and I was sucking we probably would have got em'.

As for melee jobs, everyone touched on the big three. Sam, war, and nin. I'd say go with Sam w/ a haste build. Hasso + other shit. If you get hate, jump and get it off of you plus you get seigen just in case you don't have jumps back. It's the best all around for case scenarios and damage combined. For straight high damage, obviously warrior is best due to attack bonuses/Job Abilities. Though, meditate only gives 60 TP keep in mind using that after landing penta thrust. XD
