I know some people think this is true. I have had numerous conversations with them. People think marijuana leads to heroin addiction. People think LSD will cause you to see your mother turn to blood and melt 20 years after you take 1 hit. Hell, my drug "education" teacher in high school told me that one.

If no one thought that, it wouldn't still be illegal, now would it?

I would like to see the source for that as well as the method for data collection. I think the two can only be linked if the guy you buy pot from also happens to sell heroin and really likes the hard sell.
 
Well the video clearly established that dating a seller can lead to heroin use. It did a poor job of correlating marijuana use to heroin use, although it is firmly established that one mechanism of marijuana gateway is that your seller often has access to harder drugs.

PURPOSE: The main purposes of this study are to examine whether and to what extent ecstasy use serves as a gateway to the use of such hard drugs as cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine and compare ages of onset of alcohol and marijuana use and subsequent use of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine among young adult ecstasy users. METHODS: Face-to-face surveys were conducted with 268 young adult ecstasy users in Atlanta, GA. Subjects were solicited by using the community identification process, including targeted sampling and guided recruitment. Data analysis involved discrete-time event-history analysis. RESULTS: Results suggest that age of onset of ecstasy use influences the initiation of cocaine and methamphetamine use for our sample of active ecstasy users. In addition, alcohol and marijuana use precedes the initiation of cocaine and methamphetamine use, but only marijuana use influences the initiation of heroin use. CONCLUSIONS: The sequential progression of drug use proposed in the gateway literature is not immutable. Researchers must take into account the changing popularity of drugs over time, such as the emergence of ecstasy use, when identifying patterns of drug-use onset.

No, marijuana use was a different arm. They weren't ecstasy users. The article's specific focus was on ecstasy as a gateway. The mj users were more controls than new findings. Only downside would probably be that they didn't have as high a N in their mj arm as ecstasy.

He makes a good point regarding lessened drive and ambition. Im sure many of us can recal instances when we were high where we actually wanted to get up and do something productive, esp things requireing creativity.

Lol I drive high all the time, but seriously if im high on weed im not so debilitated that I cant function properly in society.. I love going out when im high the world seems more interesting.

I really dont know if I believe in 'gateway' drugs. Sounds like people making excuses for poor life choices. I've used E.. more than I care to admit, lol. Never touched Meth or Coke. Oddball propaganda bullshyte.

Finally! I've been trying to find the Pete's couch commercial for awhile now. That's the ONE DP video I've ever seen that I actually liked. I don't think that specific commercial spews any bullshit other than the '11 hour high', unless they were smoking BC bud, you're not gonna be high for that long. That and the sitting on the couch till they were 86 part, that was an exageration too...but all in all, it's the most truthful DP video I've ever seen. I know I'm definately a lazy bastard when I'm high, the couch is my best friend. If I have things to do on a paticular day, yard work, house work - work, I don't get high until after it's done, because I know there's no way anything will get done if I don't.
Now, that isn't to say that I don't gain my mobility and motivation back when I'm sober. There's no motivation loss the next day when I wake up or anything like that. Saying that smoking pot affects sobriety is complete bullshit.
