Halo 3 had the most innovative addition to a FPS in years. Save film function... End of discussion lol... Every game i have played since Halo 3 i have wished i could use that very same function. Ninja Gaiden 2 is the only game i am aware of that has tried something similar but it was not close to as special.

Bungie looks even more genius because of the timeing... I mean Youtube at this point has blown up world wide... Great time for a save film feature in one of the most popular games ever eh?

I dont have time to read the article at the moment... But is this innovations from last year or are they just comparing these 2 games? And i wanted to add, I loved Portal but the actual "Portals" in the game felt a whole lot like a game not a lot of people played... Prey...

but Halo 3 more innovative than Portal? I think not >.> the story's nothing new, the setting's nothing new, the gameplay is nothing new. Not bad, awesome fun and good, but not innovative.

People consider Halo 3 innovative because it has a lot of online functions that wasn't before it on console shooter all in one package. I guess some people feel the need to take PCs out of the running in order to give console games an advantage. Don't agree with them obviously, but some people think interesting new game design is less innovative than bringing decade old PC features to a console that's essentially a PC. Not a knock at Halo 3 though, it's not a huge jump over Halo 2 but it's still got a really great campaign.

To be fair, Portal was basically First Person Mario with placeable warp pipes. That didn't make it any less fun though.

There was nothing innovative about Portal s story.

Nothing innovative about its setting.

So why even mention those aspects of Halo 3?

Portals game play was cool and somewhat innovative but the upside down shit has been done before also...

Save film feature > Portal upside down shit.

EDIT: Fire i dont think its all about the online functions of matchmaking, which still are incredible. They would have compared it to Halo 2 then no? Which game did you save a film feature, edit camera angles and what not... Add it to your file share box, share it with your friends and use live to watch the videos together with friends like its a feature film with on PC? Hmmm...

Lol any game on the PC since FRAPS came out.

the save film feature is is not better than Portal's gameplay fun >.> god that's just silly.. it isn't even innovative. Pretty sure it was done in PC gaming before Halo 3. Though I'm not sure, so if not, good for them.. but that's hardly innovative to the point they should beat out a more innovative game :|

Quick, someone check outside for signs of the apocalypse: I agree with Firestreak.

Save Film Feature, you mean where you could replay a match? Pfft, who cares. I'd rather play another match than just watch one I'd already played; and I wouldn't care to watch anyone else's matches either. Pretty much the only people who use that feature are the ones obsessed with Halo.

The warping was similar to Prey, but in portal, you could actually create them yourselves, that's where the innovation came in. The game actually had something worthwhile that was new, not just 3rd person fraps.

I believe you're forgetting the old saying, "speedy thing go in, speedy thing go out."

And oh yeah, if we're ignoring PC gaming, which we'd have to for Halo 3, then we're ignoring mods, and have to consider Unreal Tournament 3 bringing mods for the first time ever to consoles. I gotta say that really trumps Halo 3's video making in terms of innovation, even if there's only 1 mod for every 50,000 Halo 3 videos on youtube.

I think the word innovation is being taken out of context. The only real addition Portal added to the mainstream is what Skaw said. Places warp pipes around the map.

Halo 3 added a lot of things.

It doesnt necessarily mean the story, or the FPS, its what things were ADDED that are innovative.

For instance, Halo 3's recording method is nothing like Fraps. The method in which games are saved is really innovative. What you can do with Fraps:
Watch recordings, Speed up and Slow Down.

Halo 3's recording method?:
You can pan around players along with being able to view the map from any direction, angle or height. Thats pretty innovative if you ask me. Just one thing on the big list.

I'd say it's more like Demos. Remember those? Doom had them. Quake had them. Only they could only be ran in their respective game, just like Halo films. The difference is, Halo 3 is a console game that allows you to share them. Thats never been done before. Halo also came with the Forge, which is quite robust for a console map editor. Bungies party system for matchmaking was also pretty amazing.

While Portal did bring a new concept to puzzle solving in a first person environment, it simply didn't bring as much to the party as Halo 3 did. Which is why it was more innovative than Portal. Elemmire's just fangasming, probably translated the opinion as saying Portal wasn't innovative at all.

Fuck you Ruffy, getting my point out faster and in less words.

The Forge offered mods for Halo 3. Rocket Race and Griffball even have official map playlists, and they were very much fan made - The guys at Red Vs. Blue made(or atleast, had a very huge hand in making) Grifball.

UT3 still has potential to offer Total Conversions to consoles though. But TCs are basically just super elaborate mods.

You are taking 3rd party programs and calling them the solution...

Halo 3 adds all this shit on one disk, on one system. For the average gamer that is the important part.

Hell if you want to say fraps plus a FPS on pc is equal to Halo 3s save film then i may as well say Modded 360s can do any mod and run any third party program your pc can... See dumb ass arguments are just that, dumb ass arguments.

Halo 3s film feature is far far far more of an advancement in technology and innovative then making a portal appear on a wall and walking through it.

Baj has played Prey lol... Man prey and Portal are similar to me lol...

Please believe devs would be copying Bungies style of save film if they could get it to work for them selves on a console. The fact bungie succeded there is truely amazing..

Absolutely disagree. Portal is probably the finest example of game development in years. The use of physics to propel YOURSELF across the level through the use of portals was sheer genius. Halo 3 is just... well, just an ok shooter, no real innovation to speak of.

Or better yet, Get a dazzle TV recorder and do almost the exact same thing as Halo 3 does but with ALL your games.

I think I'm more looking at the most innovative single feature, and Halo 3 is a bit hard to qualify since a lot of the rare features it has have aren't new, either to PC or in some cases other console games. Like the level editor has been in Timesplitters, various matchmaking features have been in other shooters. I'm trying to look at a single feature that adds something completely new as deserving of an innovation award.

But seriously... Eye of Judgement. You don't have to like it, but it's completely innovative, more than anything else that's come out in this period.

Seriously tho... I'll repeat, Eye of Judgment, it makes this whole argument fairly pointless. I've never even played a full game of it, completely not my thing, but it's pretty obviously more innovative than anything else out this generation in terms of distancing itself from any previously made video game.

Absolutely agreed, that is truly innovative with the use of barcode recognition to summon card models onto the screen.

I'm also in agreement about the level editor in Timesplitters being more innovative than Forge.

In all honesty Forge is JUST FOR MACHINIMA.

Theres a difference, a very large one mind you, between a recording and a reenactment. Halo 3 does the latter.

In all honesty Forge is JUST FOR MACHINIMA.

Like I said. Forge brought Rocket Race and Grifball. Game types that were popular enough to warrant official playlists in matchmaking. It's not just for Machinama.

I wouldn't expect a tried and true Wapanese to understand though.
