Elemental Compass? Ever heard of it?

I was looking at the Koolaid Linkshell constellation graphic and they have East and West reversed. Is this actually correct?

Basically their compass looks like this:

........N
........|
E-----------W
........|
........S

I could be way off, but I once heard that the star charts were reversed because you were looking down on the stars, rather than looking up like you would be from the ground.

Something like that anyway.
If I get a chance, I'll go find one of the star chart NPCs and check it out.

Hummmm... not so sure about that... wether I am on the ground or in a plane, if a look at a bird east of me, it is always east no matter what my point of view is.

I think this was either a mistake or a translation error. But then again, I think chocolate milk comes from brown cows! :lol:

Well, I say that because I don't think the cardinal directions are printed on the Star Charts (though I could be very wrong).

For instance, look at the keyboard on your desk. For a standard keyboard, the NUM pad would be on your right. Now, pretend you're looking at the bottem of the keyboard from underneath (might take some twisting around). Now the NUM pad is on your left. I think that's basically why it would be reversed.

Either way, it isn't too important. All I'm concerned with is that it works haha

Ok, hate to argue (really do! ), but if I am looking at my keyboard from underneath (without turning around) the NUM is still to my right. Now, If I do a 180, then it will be to my left, but that's why sailors use cardnial directions instead of they're writting hand, those dont turn with you, Nort is always at the same place.

So, I could be looking from any direction, any point in space, there is no way East and West are reveresed while North stay at the same place.

Yeah, I know. I chose a bad example, and thanks to Allakazham's 'you're not cool enough to use our search function unless you pay for it' thing, I can't find where I originally read about it.

I did find this example, though...
LOL! Bushoumono I just realized! The compass directions are flipped on the image you posted! ^w^ If you take that into account, all the compass directions in both versions (grandebob and yours) match up completely!

Is this a Square-Enix flub? XD

This is how constellation maps portray direction because you are supposed to be looking up at the stars, not down (such as road maps)

Road Maps:
============
\\N//
W=E
//S\\

Star Maps:
============
\\N//
E=W -- Pretend to look up and you will see.
//S\\
So SE is correct. ^^
from this thread... http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24&mid=109527546340865398&num=21 (which refers to another compass and another thread which I never found)
that maybe explains it a bit better than I can. If you can kinda' visualize North and South being constant, and East and West flipping over on a 3-d'ish plane as you look up, that's kinda' what it's saying, i think.
Also, I think you can get the same effect as if you took the graph of f(x) and -f(x).

I gave up on finding the original post after going back ten pages, so if it really matters to anyone, there's a place to start. However, I did happen on this post and compass
http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=24&mid=1094778258753764070&num=18
which some people seem to think is a bit better. Do with it what you will ^^

The 'Now, If I do a 180, then it will be to my left, but that's why sailors use cardnial directions instead of they're writting hand, those dont turn with you, Nort is always at the same place. ' makes sense to me, but like I said, I'm only relating what I read a loooonng time ago.

edit: Roommate thought of this.
Say you were a sailor, drawing constellation maps. Do you treat the paper as the sky, or as if you were looking up, like a photograph. Are the FFXI star charts the later?
Try bending over, looking at the ground. Label your right hand east, and left hand west. Rotate up to look at the sky (don't bend up, because then you're changing north and south), and then east and west have changed, like in the above example. The true east and west haven't changed, but your perception has.

Euh.. no thanks, no bending over here! :lol: The way I see it, no matter how I am positioned, twisted or high in mid air, if I am looking towards the North (either real or on a map), East will always be to my right and west to my left. The only possible way for them to be inversed is if I make a 180 (or turn the map around) and look towards the south, then they will be inversed from my perspective, not in reality.

Anyway, I tried Kurgon's theory last night and fisehd for 1 hour facing west (Water) No real change in the amount of fish caught (2, lol I am only 6 in fishing).

Then, for no particular reason, I tried another direction for an hour, south (Earth). Well, I don't know if the direction had anything to do with it (same fishing spot, Bastok Market) but I was getting something on my hook about 80% of the time and caught 8 Giant Catfishs.

Maybe someone can try it out to and see what results you are getting.
