Elemental Resists?

After dealing with the excessive bullshit resist gear collections in WoW, I remembered that items in FFXI actually do have elemental resist themselves. Is there a website or research to show how much resist you need to mitigate damage?

I forgot which element Meteor was associated with but picture swapping into +resist gear instead of taking a few thousand HP of damage... you take 100 or so... it would be an interesting idea if it applies from WoW into this game.

Meteor would most likely be fire or earth.

It's definantly not a 1 for 1 mitigation, so even 1 Resist in an element will show signs of damage prevention. I know I take far less damage from Water IV with my Kabuto on than just 50.

I would assume you need a lot of resist, enough to effectively nerf your stats/def.

I more practical idea would be when fighting a goblin you swap into a fire resist set right before a bomb toss and quickly switch back. I started thinking about this while leveling whm to 37 and noticing that I was doing the same thing in WoW with casting elemental resist spells... barfira for example.

Well, it's not like you need to fight the entire battle with resist gear on. So it nerfing your stats isn't exactly that detrimental.

I only say that because in WoW it's either elemental resists or stats, and you can't change gear during fights. This game actually makes swapping gear practical... that and those windower macros :p

Yeah, but for example, BarElement spells, unenhanced only put up like, 80 resist. This means the difference in multiple hundreds of damage.

Then again, this game is too random. If I have my STR Rings and Suzaku Sune-Ate on, thats a base of 68 Resist for me. And once against a Volcanic Bomb, helping someone get Wyvern Skull for Opo-Opo Crown, I was one-shot by Self Destruct, compared to everyone else only taking 500~ without resists.

I dunno is a base of 68 low in this game? Many things are still a mystery.

Here's the chart from WoW for example. From my actual experience you needed 200 FR to actually make you think it was an investment. For comparison most items that offered just 10FR were expensive as hell.

It's moderate. It's a good amount from gear, but can't touch barfira and fire carol.

Well right before I fight gobs in Kazham on my WAR, I will pick up a lot of +Fire (100-150 before barFira) and see if anything good comes out of it.

Meteor is fire. I think its been proven with plds with bomb queen ring ^^

You probably can't get that much at that level. Probably not even 30.

Yeah it's not looking so good, I'm looking at armor and such on MT and other places. Oh well, just a thought since I've never seen a real discussion about this other then... it really sucks. hehe

Dunno, I've seen people take full damage from a Prime even with the bar- spell up and Stoneskin. I hate that you can't have guarantees in this game -_-;

There is. Guaranteed that random dice roll is gonna f__k you hard one day.

Barspells (and Carol) are unique, they don't just boost your elemental resistance, they boost the chance of that resist happening.

So say that you've got +68 fire resistance, from Suzaku's + Ruby Rings, or whatnot. You'll be at the base resist chance, though your resist will be stronger than the next guy with +18 fire resistance. Still that 5% chance for a critical failure on your resist roll for maximum damage possible (becuase FFXI is based off the D20 system, like so many other RPGs), and say, a 25% chance to resist. So that means if you both do a 50% resist (since most resists seem to follow a 10% 25% 50% 75% 90% system), the one with +68 will take less damage. But you've both got the same chance of resisting.

Now factor in barspells. We'll say they add another 25% chance to resist, for 50% total, in additon to the +80 or whatever resist boost from the spell. So not only is the chance of resist higher, but the resist will be stronger.

Blessed Blargh or whatever the WHM JSE is called boosts barspells even further, we'll say yet another 25%, for a 75% chance to resist. And of course the higher the chance of resist in the first place, the higher the chance of a stronger resist.

Now if that made any sense at all, then I guess my boredom in class paid off. If not, just ignore my rambling.

Blessed Briault. I'm leery of that too - I had my static whm do a bar-spell with no body piece on, and then with the Briault on. Both ended up giving the same resist amount, so I'm guessing the Blessed Briault increases chance of resist rather than damage mitigated (I think this is what you said... coffee affecting brain cells).
