Hey I got a quick question if I should use INT+ rings or two astrals.

I just got back to FFXI and I got the astrals as a gift when I was a lvl 30 pld,
and when the rings weren't a rip off.

I'm an Elvaan blm and I lack MP.

You could use the Astrals when you rest to 100% MP and when you use 50 MP, swap in your INT rings. Your HP won't recover, but it'll be like 50 free MP every time you rest to 100%.

If you're having MP issues, you might want to change your style of play to conserve MP, or maybe craft juices in the field.

hmmmm elvaan have teh shit mp and int.....i say.......QUIT BLM AND GO MELEE!!
honestly, this was my first thought, if you wanna be another guy on the bandwagon though do what Crookedmidget suggested.

Jokes on all of you. lol Argenin has high level melee jobs, he just doesn't have a high post count. You know how those PLD types are... "I've been hit so many times, I just wanna blow sh*t up!"

Crookedmidget had good advice, and since you already must know how to gear swap, that would work out really well. I guess you'd likely already be using a hairpin as well, so other places to add +mp gear would be... well, rings, I guess. I guess it's down to preference, but you may also consider +mp food, like an Orange Kuchen, or something in that vein. Of course, it's down to play style, I ration my mp like it's gold, while I know some BLMs like to really go balls out every time they can.

And to make a tidy profit, assuming you won't level another low level mage job, sell the Astrals once you hit 40 and go Electrum.

I have an elvaan Blm Friend that is the same level as me and had almost 400 less MP than me when we were at lvl 68.

If you are going to be a Blm mage, don't do that as your Main job. Don't Merit it. Don't try to beat maat with Blm.

you should also plan on investing in a serket ring.

Elvaans are good plds. A Serket ring wouldn't suck for a pld either.

Please don't be a Blm.

If you must,

That'll help you level Dark Magic too, as you can Drain everytime you change Rings.

That's pretty rotten advice, dude. I suppose I shouldn't be a warrior as a taru, either?

As an elvaan blm, I'd recommend investing heavily in INT and also get as much MP equip as you can within reason. Once you use whatever MP bonuses you have, switch to the INT gear as Crookedmidget and Daryus suggested.

It also changes as you level up. In the 50's I find more value in how fast I can rest MP rather than what my max MP is. I seldom have time to rest to 100%, so I just try to get a tick here and a tick there and every extra point rested helps.

crookedmidget has a good idea, but I'd say if you could only get on kind of rings go INT, as a taru I almost never use all my mp, I'll die from taking hate long before that happens. oh and don't listen to these people who say elvaan blm should never be done, I've seen it done and it can be very awsome

Who the hell are you guys to tell somone what they can and can't level? Just because hes elvaan hes "Joining the bandwagon?" Jeese, talk about arrogant. And where and alvaan might suffer in mp, which shouldnt be really that much, he will have more hp and vit to take the hits. Just because your taru doesn't mean your better than anyone. People used to bash galka whms, but guess what? They have 1k+ hp and 1k mp, and can take hits like no other. Race isn't what makes the job.

And yea, crooked had the right idea, just swap gear out, but if thats a hassle I'd say go with Int, get more bang for your buck.

Now for some advice from someone who's been down that road, Elvaan BLM lv 75.

I've always had both MP and INT rings, and yes I macro them in and out. Rest to full with the +MP rings. When you get up, start off with debuffs like poison, burn, shock... whatever is appropriate for the mob and party. The elemental debuffs in particular aren't based upon INT, so not having the INT rings on won't matter. After you use up the extra 50 MP, switch to the +INT rings.

As a rule, I looked for +INT gear more than +MP. Then I would use foods that give good MP and MP recovery bonuses. There isn't much good equipment for +MP except the very high end gear, but some foods (like marron glace) give excellent mp bonuses. For a number of levels I was using crimson jelly regularly, but I had a static xp and I knew it wouldn't go to waste. MP really isn't a big issue, instead of having 300 unused MP after chain #5 as a taru, I would have 0-100 left.

A well equipped and well played Taru blm will always outdamage you based upon their naturally high INT. However, it's not really noticable until higher levels. My Thundaga III is significantly less than some other races, but it still hurts. At mid levels, you'll be doing 10-40 damage less than a well equipped taru, and that's just not worth mentioning... unless you're the kind of guy that breaks his game controller when a friend beats you at Madden Football.

I have outdamaged and outlasted (MP wise) many taru blms in the past who just didn't do a good job. I've also kept up with taru blms who were decent. On top of that, blm's can do more than just cast nukes. Figure out how to fit into your party, and when you have to leave early and be replaced by a taru blm, they'll want you back. Really, the player is more important than the race or even gear. Race and gear set the upper limit of what you can do in this game, but many people never come close to that limit... they just don't know how.

If you're getting hit you aren't doing your job right, are you? i get told i'm over nuking if i ever pull hate ever. T3 pulled hate off the nin tank? over nuking, point blank case, by the statements of everyone who isn't a blm you never ever should take hits ever or you're terrible and suck bad totally.
point blank fact, elvaan have no stat you're looking for in a blm. not to say you can't do it, and can't do it well... but i'm leveling monk on my mule because taru has no stats a monk really needs to do well.
Arrogant? yes, elitist, probably just a little... just this \(^_^)/ much, racially gimped in all the stats of the job i'm leveling on any of my characters? NO

this isn't the flameboard and don't bring that trash on here, into event schedualing or anywhere else but the flameboard anymore.

Lol, Zoolander sounds like those stupid BradyGames guides. Aren't you some high level? And you have still yet to understand that HP and VIT have little to no importance to a BLM at all?

When a BLM pulls hate, it's not gonna last very long, (unless you have a weak tank of course). With buffs like Stoneskin and Blink, HP and VIT really don't mean a thing to a BLM.

But anyways, to answer the post, I also say have both with you. I'm giving a straightforward answer to the question. lol The only question being asked is between rings. As has been mentioned, just simply switch gear when appropriate. And for other possible references, don't worry about MP+ as much, since you won't always be at full MP every battle, unless your party doesn't want exp chains.

additional note, i amend that, i have a taru female war mule, i just don't intend to take that to 75, just high enough for rank 5. i'm well aware of the existnce of RSE and well aware just how long you can wear it, i'm not here to argue this or jack the thread. I fully endorse Crooked's advice and Osse's done it, he knows as well as anyone. i've exp'd with JB's blm and he's as good as anyone else who's gonna set a large amount of gil on the line.

If you wanna argue this i'll go edit my posts down to nothing and pretend i said nothing. If you really care flame me. I'm aware of the int +6 and mp + 88 of the level 30-ish rse. nice stuff. can sell it for a nice bundle too unlike taru rse. I'd love to have the elvaan rse belt and those boots at 62 are nice too. Why make a fight out of this?

HP and VIT mean nothing? This is where you are wrong. I don't know how many times I have had a Galka mage live through an attack simply for the fact that he was a Galka and not a Taru. More than once have I seen an elvaan BLM slightly overnuke and pull hate for a hit, only to find themselves getting a Sickle Slash to the face. Yeah, stoneskin might take the hit for the most part, but not fully. Having more VIT and HP is the difference between finding yourself with 500 HP or 200 HP. Stats are there for a reason and do serve a purpose.

You forgot to mention Blink. And, as you've said:

pull hate for a hit

If you're still alive, and the hate returns to where it should be, then I'd really prefer the extra damage on the nuke than the damage incurred to the nuker.

No one's turning any of this into any sort of flame, settle down...

And waste more MP? The extra INT doesn't really add that much more to damage It's mostly their to not get resisted. And in either case, if the spell did enough to pull hate, it wasn't resisted so your point doesn't really hold and validity.

If you happen to have an RDM in the party to heal that person, you wouldn't be wasting mp.

And I mentioned the extra damage gained. It heightens exponentially on a Magic Burst, and if you're a smart BLM, you'll save your Elemental Seals for those. Not that it can be used every 3 minutes. -_-

And if it did enough to take hate, I hope you're talking about MBs. If not, the tank just ain't so good at holding hate. And since its about MBs, it reverts back to what I said in this post.
