Elvaan BLM.. 2x Astrals Vs. 2 INT+ rings

I expected a quite much longer reply to this thread than the one my elvaan blm friend posted.

However, all I want to say is that that exact elvaan blm is the best blm I've played with.
It's not about your characters race as much as your IRL intelligence most of the times.

As for what rings to use, I would say INT rings.
50 more MP is half a nuke, which if resisted is worthless.
Make your spells count, and learn that Conserve MP is not only an ability you get, it's also how you play.

That's pretty rotten advice, dude. I suppose I shouldn't be a warrior as a taru, either?

Not as your main job, no. And you shouldn't try to merit it.
Maybe Ninja or thief or Ranger, but not Warrior.

this post is ridiculous.

one of the highest damaging blms i know is elvaan, believe it or not.

yeah, they face a lower INT initially and lower mp pool, but just because you are taru, does not make you the end all at blm. the end.

and yes, he does outdamage most taru at camps.

Sure, but he has to sit 2x as much therefore doing less DoT. And If I get outdamaged my an Elvaan, it's because he's wearin 50 million in gear or because I was Silenced.

I'm not the end all be all blm as a taru, no. But if you give a taru and an elvaan the same gear, The taru will do much more damage and have much more MP left.
In the same respect that Elvaan Sam > Taru Sam...
Taru Blm> Elvaan Blm. I'm not insulting anyone, I'm just sayingthat as an Elvaan, you will never be the best Blm possible no matter what you do.

I beat maat first try as Elvaan blm.
As did most other Elvaan blms i know.
I dont know a single taru blm that didnt die
atleast 5 times.

I beat him 2nd try.

Kinda.

First try I was lvl 67 and had a bunch of my gear loaned out and just wanted to see what the fight was like, I got whipped. 2nd try lvl 70, used 1 yag drink, no hi-pots, no ethers. So in my mind the 1st try doesn't count, but alas, I did go through 2 Blm tests.

A well equipped and well played Taru blm will always outdamage you based upon their naturally high INT.

Exactly.
Osse knows what he is talking about.
If you care for more advice from other Elvaan Blms that know what they are talking about, Talk to Heelfirebrimstn or Gabrielhellfire. Both Elvaan Blms. Both very good friends of mine.

How good a blm does isn't reliant entirly on the Blm. If you have melees that want to start the SC when a mob is half dead, that Keeps you from doing a lot of damage. If you have a ninja and no TA, then you can't cast your strongest attack spells ever. If you have a Galka tryin to be a whm with no RSE or MP gear, you haev to make up for that. The worth of your Blm rests partly on the shoulders of everyone in the party.

Say what you will, Tarus make better Blms than elvaans.
I'm not saying elvaans suck at Blm. I'm just saying that they are more suitable for just about any other job, cept maybe Smn.

That's my opinion, if you don't like it, let me know about it, I like to argue.
Especially when I know I'm right.

go with INT rings, a BLM doesn't need MP.

And trippy, you are wrong. Yes, a taru with the exact same gear as an elvaan will outdamage the elvaan, but part of the fun in being an elvaan BLM is the challange. During my career as a BLM 1 > 75, I outdamaged every other BLM except for 1, and that was a tarutaru with better gear then me.

However, the part you are wrong with, is that your theory doesn't always hold true. Yes, a tarutaru might be able to nuke for more in a exp party, but in a HNM fight or god fight, if you nuke that much at one time without healing, you will most likely die anyway, which means that you have a 5-min period where you can't nuke much. And if you die again while still weakened, you will suddenly do agrand total of 0 damage with each and every spell, even MB'ed. And suddenly Elvaan starts to shine again, as they have higher survivability with higher VIT and HP.

Part of the BLM job is knowing not to overnuke, and almost every taru BLM I know overnukes.

Ok...
So how am I wrong?
What part?

Any blm that knows he's gonna over nuke (and you will know before hand) knows to cast Stoneskin and/or Blink (hell, maybe even phalanx if they are /rdm)first depending on how much life the mob has left.

As far as tarus over nuking and grabing hate... Only if you have a Nin tank and no TA. I make my own parties most of the time, and I won't have a Nin tank with no TA in the party. I was in a party earlier tonight and I cast Blizzaga III for 1475damage (new record for me  ). I still didn't take hate. Why? Cause I had a badassed Pld and a Drk/thf.

Elvaan Blm, no matter how you do it, are not as effective as taru blms.

Oh, trust me. They are.

And I know NIN's that can hold hate just fine in exp parties without TA... so don't give me that bullshit =/

lvl 66, no meds.
And obviously you havent been at to many hnm's.
If you try to spend your fancy mp in a pace i cant
keep up with, you are gonna die anyway, while i'll
keep doing my damage. And for that, should i get hate
i dont get oneshotted, like most tarus.

Trippyhippy said:
yeah, with an elvaan Blm....

no, with taru BLMes too. Seriously, do you think a difference of maybe 10 damage at the most will be the difference between pulling hate or not with a NIN tank?

The whole Taru thing is very much overstated. I know some great blm who are Taru, Hume and Elvaan (not saying that no other race)

... A friend of mine called favre is a 74 Elvaan blm and I know he takes it very seriously and uses -hp equip to get latent on sorcerer's. I know for a fact that he outdamages the majority of blm he plays with (inc Taru) and still has 700+ hp compared to a taru on latent with 540 or so. The mp thing is not a big issue with good equip and the fact is that we rarely go below 200-300 mp anyway.

...Jinshorty and Uliwelia (can't spell) are two Taru blm I know who both do crazy dmg. Shorty does more dmg than any other blm I have seen, and is the only blm I have came across that outdamages me, out of about 60 or so I've been with in manaburn.

... Radiator kicks ass as a hume blm. Me and him kinda compete a bit, but he and the ones I mention above are buddies and it all friendly.

I actually think that the latent on the sorcerer's is easier to get on Taru, but leaves you very low on hp. You have to be a brave bish like Jinshorty to pull it off ^^. BUT I know i sit on 703 on yellow and that is plenty enough. If an Elvaan can somehow pull off latent he's be higher. Just costs a lot.

Not sure what end results would be on max damage Taru v Elvaan, but a taru on same equip as hume can outdamage by about 20 on top tier spells, which is not much.

Some great Elvaan blm out there. go for it!

(Didn't mean for this to be a mention all your blm buddies type post, as there are loads I know that are worthy of further mention)

I can't even believe this is an issue.

How can you possible say that elvaans are better Blm than Tarus?

The race makes almost no difference except for the fact that I can go for longer without resting, my nukes deal more damage, you can take more damage, and I have more agility than you.

Admittidly, the skill of the player is what makes a Blm. Knowing when to nuke, when to hold yer fire, wether it's better to use Shock/Burn/choke, rasp/Frost/Drown, Shock/frost, Burn/Rasp, Choke/drown, when you need to back off and help heal, what mobs are weak vs. what element, Being able to stun AoE, having a full spellbook, etc...

So if your saying the fact that you start out with 1 more Vit than a taru, that helps your survivability? I say the fact that I start with 2 more Agi trumps that. As well as the fact I have 1/3 more MP than you.

I'm gonna have to tell lots of people about this thread. Maybe someone else can talk some sense into you.

I consider this spewing a bunch of crap. I will lvl whatever job I damn well please and set what job I damn well please to be my main. After reading this thread it makes me want to lvl SMN as galka just to piss people like you off.

In the larger scheme of things it dont matter what race you are. Think of it in end game terms. A galka BLM > then anything melee. By your logic nobody on the whole damn server should be a mage or tank. If BLM>melee (such as taru>elvaan blm) then nobody should lvl a melee job.

Im sorry to point this out, but a Elvaan BLM with 100mill in gear is greater then a Taru with crap gear. Its really gear that makes you good, not your race.

This is the way i look at it, and always look at it, taru can cast 5 spells and do as much dmg as an Elvaan that casts 5.5 spells. whoopty freaking do.

In end-game it doesnt freaking matter, you can take that extra 100 dmg (over an elvaan) you do on a burst in your exp party and it doesnt matter, most melee can do do that in 1 round of attking as a melee.

I had a Tarutaru in my exp static for a long time. He very rarely even came close to using all his MP, so the extra MP is a non issue for exping situations imo. Its the sheer INT+ that a taru gets. Which isnt that much more then any other race to make a shits worth of difference in the larger scheme of things.

There are soo many holes in this argument everyone can see through it.

They arent. Theyre saying that the differences between the two are all but negligible, which they are. Tarus can be great melees and galkas/elvaan can be great mages. The base stat differences between races has no more than a negligible impact on your job performance. Sure, there will always be a slight difference, so you can rest safe that as a taru you will be the BEST race for BLM, but dont think youre miles ahead of the other races. The elvaans that play BLM because its fun, and dont want to have PLD or DRK, or whatever other melee job you think they should play, as their main. This is an RPG, people choose their race because they want to play as a member of that race, not because itl giive them an extra 10 int over another race when theyre 75.

Actually the Int Difference is like 27 at 75. Not the point though. Taru's have more potential, but it is RARELY realized. Most taru blms Ive met are pretty gimp and have just coasted by. "I'm taru, I need nothing!!" Hell, the best Blm on the server is a Hume if that tells you anything...

Who you speaking to?

: )

If your HNM LS will go and say "No, I won't let an elvaan in the main alliance because the tarus deal 20 more damage per nuke!!" something is seriously wrong with it...

Also, we never said that Elvaan BLMes are better then taru BLMes, what we're saying is that there is a difference, BUT THE DIFFERENCE DOESN'T MATTER, as both can be great BLMes.

If you start a new char every time you want to lvl a different job because "that's the best race for that job", that's good for you. Me and the majority of the FFXI players will take our "gimp" race and lvl that job because we enjoy it.

On another note, every time I see you I will have to /point and /laugh over your stupidity.

At level 40 I've out DMG any other BLM that I've partied with. Granted it was maybe 1 or 2 DMG but it was still higher and I'm a hume male. The only way I know that I can be out DMG is when I play my mule. He is a little taru BLM/RDM and he has all of my gear that is so good. Now if I could get some Ermite's +1 and some Morion Earings Hmmm Bio would do 100 DMG a cast.

More MP means staying up longer but staying down longer when the "uptime" is burnt out.

And so what if a Taru BLM might grab hate better than a Elvaan BLM? A Taru NIN isn't gonna hold hate vs an Elvaan WAR, and a Galka WHM is gonna have trouble keeping a Mithra PLD alive.

Every race has an upside and downside, for every thing you can brag about there's some big flaw that can be pointed it. Who cares if (x) race isn't the best possible at their job? Unless someone of a different race has the exact same gear and exact same skill as you, the difference won't show, and even then there's a chance it won't really show at all.

Don't play the "Better Than You" game, you'll always win just as many times as you lose, and you'll be sore/aggrivated in the end over something that doesn't even matter..

I think I'm gonna go level my PLD when I get home.

That's my opinion, if you don't like it, let me know about it, I like to argue.
Especially when I know I'm right.

Again, the player makes the difference-- not the race. Elvaans shouldn't play SMN? O.O Sorry to disappoint you, one've the best SMNs that I know is *drum roll*... and elvaan. I won't disagree with you that the Taru SMN has the best MP pool to work with-- but the Elvaan along with any other race with a smaller MP pool has already adjusted to this and will more than likely know when and where to conserve their mana pool to be able to make each and every BP count. Tarutarus make awesome mages-- There is no disagreement this statement. The disagreement is that other races can perform the tasks just as well if not better depending on skill, gear, and hands-on experience with the job.

As far as arguing your opinions when you know you're right-- There is no cut and dry right or wrong in this debate to be right about. You are only right due to the fact that they are your opinions, but Galaika said it best. It's an RPG. You'll never win a prize for being a Tarutaru BLM. You'll never "beat" the game because you were a Tarutaru BLM. You can build respect as being good at your job, but in the end, your character race is trivial in comparison. Being that it is a RPG-- you do have the choice not to play with/party with an Elvaan BLM, a Galka WHM, a Tarutaru NIN, etc-- but you don't have the right to tell anyone that they should not do it if they want to.

***

This poor thread has been completely derailed. :(

I am of the opinion that any race can be any job if they want to. That's the beauty of this game, being able to be a little bit of everything.

The only thing that race really effects (with the exception of how you appear in game) is play style. An elvaan blm is gonna play differently then a taru. Neither is better then the other, just played differently. A galka or elvaan will be a little more conservative and picky as to what spells to use. A mithra bst is gonna be a little more cautious with there chr gear. All that race will effect is how one plays, not the end result.

And now I'm off my soapbox and I'm done.
