I'm making this thread because I want some intelligent discussion into the thought of an endgame PLD who's a Tarutaru. I'm thinking of leveling the job over the winter break but it's not a job I'd like to level and leave sitting in my Mog House *ALL* the time. I'd imagine that +hp gear would be crucial. Is there a list of the best +hp gear to max HP and keep from getting one-shotted by a mob? Inevitably what I'm saying is:
1) Is it possible for a taru to tank stuff like wyrms/kings/jailers at all?
2) Exactly what type of gear/merits would be the best benefit?

Yea its possibly, its a little bit of a hinderance, but they can still pwn.

Prolly some notable HP items you would need/want

Intruder Earring (40 mp > HP)
Cassie Earring (50 mp > HP)
Bomb Queen Ring (+75 HP)
Bloodbead ring (+50 and -10 mp iirc)
Gigant Mantle (+80 HP)
Homan Hands (+20) Legs(+26) and Feet(+31)
Creek M Mitts (+65 HP)
Gallant Surcoat/+1 (+20)

Food like carbonara is nice for HP ( +175)
Steppe Sash (+60 HP)

Of course, stuff like Homan has other benefits like haste and enmity on hands, as well as +mp. Little harder to obtain of course. Really would depend on the situation as to how much HP you want to throw on. PLD/NIN popularity has really decreased the need for rediculous amounts of HP for PLDs as far as end game tanking goes.

It's perfectly doable. And if you're low on people, the nice MP pool would help out.
For most stuff you wont need much HP gear really, since most fights are pld/nin.
Around 1400 is plenty, so as a taru you might need a gigant mantle or two :P.
If you go pld/war you might want some more.
But then again, getting one set of gear and wearing that 100% wont get you to far as with any job.

its possible, but with equal playing ability, there are better races for pld.

sure, you will have alot of mp. but if you are taking hits, you have to make sure your WHMs are on point since you have a lower hp base total and will die quicker and require faster mp usage.

the god LS i run with has a taru pld. he's pretty good but his HP and low natural VIT seems apparent when i think about pld's of other races. but when a god does take him out he goes down fighting (so to speak). :P

I could see it making pld/war for taru's harder on HNMs, but who uses /war anymore for anything other than really weak HNMs anyways? As Reko said, 1400 HP is more than enough, hell im at around 1250 on nin most of the time. Race really shouldn't mean much in this game, sure it might lower the ceiling some, but for nearly every single player, they wont reach that ceiling anyways. Just look at Elvaan BLMs, or hell even Galka BLMs. Zenosu kicks ass. And Galka WHMs rock, they have a ton of HP and a ton of MP.

psy typically when i run around i have around 1400-1500HP. I usually dont concern myself a whole lot w/ Vit unless it is from Sattva or M head. Cassie/Intruder/BQR/RSE2 hands help alot. However there are times i swap out my RSE2 hands for valor for the hate boost.

When my shell is short on blms i main tank and kite quite a bit on PLD.

SE needs to stop pumping DD's full of drugs and pass some of that shit to PLD's.

Intruder Earring (40 mp > HP) -- Hades (+1)
Cassie Earring (50 mp > HP) -- Hades (+1)
Bomb Queen Ring (+75 HP) -- Sattva
Bloodbead ring (+50 and -10 mp iirc) -- Hercules' Ring
Gigant Mantle (+80 HP) -- Resentment Cape
Homan Hands (+20) -- good choice
Legs(+26) -- Good choice
and Feet(+31) -- Good choice, Relic feet also an option. If straight tanking, Glt Feet+1 > all
Creek M Mitts (+65 HP) -- Relic / Homan both better
Gallant Surcoat/+1 (+20) -- Fine

Food like carbonara is nice for HP ( +175)
Steppe Sash (+60 HP) -- Warwolf Belt (among others)

Edited in what someone who isn't worried about HP could use /nin. Enmity > all while /nin. I realize High Breath Mantle can be used for back, but in wyrm fights if you're keeping hate, roar will be killing the effect of that repeatedly, so its not a viable option.

Remember for each piece of HP gear you throw on to match the HP of another raced PLD, you're giving up Enmity+ in return. All the HP in the world doesn't mean a thing if the HNM is feasting on your mages. Full HP+ gear is only useful for one thing, and that's spirit's within. In the same respect though, if you do 15 points more damage on spirit's while I have 20 more Enmity than you, which of the Spirit's is more useful?

Well I've had PLD 75 for quite a while and its not to bad, since as stated before most things are pld/nin. I would not recommend using a taru if your going to be doing pld/war because of HP issues. And as Jamal said the more HP you stack on the less emnity which is what a PLD is all about. But a taru pld with aegis would pretty much be invincible since we have such a high MP pool :)!!

Huh? They buffed the hell out of PLDs the last year or so.

And yea Jamal, I was mainly just trying to list possible HP options to him. Idk what his situation is like as far as his end game activities atm, or funds. Enmity is definitely priority for pld/nin, I'd imagine it goes Enmity > Haste > HP for typical pld/nins? Shield skill items really rock for /war, if you are busting that out at all.

Oh, and if you really want to be a pimp pld for end game stuff, get a fire resist set ^^ -mgc dmg for ultima/JoL is nice too. Lots of armor sets for lots of situations, such is the life of end game tanks.

Enmity > Shield > Haste > HP = VIT is what I went off of. When PLD got the no-spell interuption when you shield block, that made shield skill godly. You can take two critical hits while casting ichi, and as long as shield procked you still can cast. That's pretty intense.

Haste is all well and good, but the small amounts of haste gear you'd be using won't effect recasts dramatically. With a heavy enmity+ set standardized, you can also reduce blinking yourself (where Mages lose target). For this reason I rarely gear swap on PLD.

Oh yea, forgot about that update...been gone from the game too long ><

And...fuck you PLDs...

-1 to that. DD <3 their lolDrugs

I'm not at endgame yet, but I had the same question when I was making a character. I see it as MP for healing would be nice and get hate. All races are in a sense balanced. Taru have less HP but more HP to heal, Galka have less MP but more HP to not need a heal. I've seen a couple Taru PLD but I don't know if they made it just to do it or what. I agree with everyone though. I see things not in a "I need +gear" but more of a "does it really even fit the job" way. Galka are the PLD ~ Elvaan are the DRK. Elvaan as dark is great for STR and their decent DEX. Taru of course mages, yada yada. I feel that if you really want to do it. It's worth it and you should do it. Good luck!

I've tanked JoL and fafnir a few times as a taru pld, no real disadvantage I've run into as a taru pld, I don't even bother with full hp gear for stuff I usually focus more on enmity and haste gear, 1400 or so hp is pretty easy to get as a taru pld without hp food and rarely will you need anymore than that.

I find in many fights taru mp can be amazing both for keeping other plds alive and in getting hate even when the other plds your working with have a lot better gear with a lot more +enmity.

If you need 2k hp to stay alive you're probably using a bad strat that is waisting all your whm's mp, unless you're like trying to survive ultima's citadel buster or something, which can also be done with -% magic damage gear I suppose, i dunno I always had to go blm.

on a further note, don't let anyone tell you, you can't play a job because of your race, any race can play any job effectively.

By decent DEX you mean lowest of any race?

Was really gonna question this too. If you want "Best of stat blocks" for most DD, Galka is where its at. Fairly high str, normal dex, highest vit, low or lowest agi, normal to high mnd, and low int/chr.

As far as PLD goes, all the races are basically even.
STR: Fun for being able to merit in DD gear and do decent vorpals.
DEX: Increases your accuracy for tp for ws and chivalry, moderately useless otherwise.
VIT: Vitality is every PLD's friend. With enough of it, you get hit like Nidhogg was an exp mob. Doubtful you'll get to that point without a lot of work, but it's attainable.
AGI: Shield Blocks, Parrying, Vs. Critical rate, dare I say evasion? And this is a stat Taru and Mithra (least common PLD) have the most of.
MND: Helps your cures, great benefit on /RDM for stoneskin power.
INT: From what I can tell, INT has little use for a PLD other than the small change in magic damage taken (witnessed the trend personally, but unsure of the exact validity)
CHR: HAS NO EFFECT ON HATE, but increases killer effects, so that's cool.

If you look at any race, they have a balanced set of the important stats given there. And since we agreed that with /NIN you can get away with lower HP and even lower MP, all races are even in that respect.

some of the stuff you said is kinda obvious. you dont NEED 2000hp to survive. correct. you only need 1hp to survive, technically. but, the more HP the better, i don't see how you can say otherwise. it has nothing to do with wasting WHM mp, it is actually just a better buffer.

any job can play any race effectively, yes. but for example, a taru monk is not going to outdd an elvaan monk on average with equal playing skill, for example. its just the way it works.

Ummm no. Anything you're fighting thats difficult at all you'll in all likelihood be using BRD/RDM/WHM/TANK/TANK/??? for the tank party. Double Ballad (Works for NIN/DRK and PLD/NIN) + Refresh + Auto-refresh + Parade is more than enough MP to recast Cure IV's as needed. Add to that Chivalry, and the MP discrepancy is null and void. Pre-Auto Refresh and Pre-Parade Gorget this 'could' be a true statement, but MP is never an issue anymore.
