English class?

Grammar is a necessity. Spelling, not so much. 55 out of every 100 people can read this no problem.

I read this (Above) flawlessly fast and was laughing for about 2 mins about it. Does that say how crap my english is?
Puntuation on the other hand is a much more important thing to get right in written english. A full stop here and comma there completley changes the way a person reads and interperates written text.
But if you can understand the point the writer is trying to get accross then starting out by flaming that persons text instead of conversing about the point is not smart or funny, it's just plain rude.
We are here to brainstorm about a game in our spare time. So lets not waste this spare time and web space trying to be a smart ass, bashing other peoples threads for the way they are written.
English is not a measure of ones inteligence, so by replying with hes a retard, morron ect only makes you look a prat.
I'm sure if a person doesn't excell in one thing probablly means they have skill and smart ideas in another subject.
So i say save your own time bullying others on english and lets start using the boards for the intention they are there for, HELPING EACH OTHER.

LOL you think they only bully over spelling and grammar? Any weak spot a person reveals here, they all jump on it like a bunch of starving coyotes on a bunny rabbit. Anything they can do to boost their own egos by stomping on someone else's, they'll do. If you want to hang out here, grow a very thick skin, quickly. There are people here worth knowing, I've met people here I will never forget, even when this forum is dead and gone. You just have to separate the wheat from the chaff.

Maybe you need to work a bit on your literacy too, the entire thread has been nothing but people saying they don't agree with giving someone a hard time over the way they type, impressions and exceptional cases aside. You're just butthurt because you acted like a drama queen and people called you on it.

Oh, and Mr. Dynamis Superstar over there, yes, one's ability to speak the language of the country they are from is part of a measure of their intelligence.

One more important thing for the "lulz dis isent english class" folk:
Some of you have said how you wouldn't write like that on a job application, or something of that nature. Why wouldn't you? Answer that and you'll see why it gives some people a bad impression.

How is English being a second language an excuse for people typing "ppl" and other retarded variations of words. Honestly? English is not a difficult language to grasp, in terms of basic grammar and spelling patterns. I agree that some of the harder grammatic structures can be forgotten on the internet. I have no problem with that. I hate when people type like this:

i lik u ppl ufunny englash is my 3 langage haw many do u spak?

Seriously, learn the damn language. It's not that hard. The inability to communicate shows laziness. I believe that if a person cannot grasp simple concepts of writing (nothing major, just the basics), they do not have the capacity to grasp anything else. As such, I will call them retarded and skip their posts (like I do when Hellstorm posts).

I do not expect people to be perfect. However, an effort is required. Oh, also, if a person with English as their second or third language is improving, than that's okay. I understand that it takes time to learn another language.

They could be the smartest person on the planet; they could have single handed cured every disease, but if they can't communicate it's all worthless. Being able to communicate well is a sign of intelligence, and it's equally as important as any other form of intelligence, because you have to be able to communicate to put that intelligence to use or even to show it.

Yes. This is entirely true. We are just mean people and no one but us is ever at fault, ever.

I think a lie detector exploded somewhere.

Sooooo people that use a spell checker is more intelligent than people who dont?
People who reread their text and correct it are more intelligent than people who dont want to waste the time doing it?
Ones ability to understand the history or geography of the country they're from... is this also a measure of ability?
I've meet people who can speak several languages then asked them a simple maths question and got a really dumb answer. Which part makes them intelligent?
Oh and have you ever taken a IQ test. Is there a section where you have to write passages flawlessly?
What im trying to say is the way a person speaks and writes INFORMALLY is a echo of their personallity.
In interviews you act as FORMALLY and respectful to the person as you can? #To try to put a unrealistic impression of yourself, on this webstie WHO GIVES A CRAP. Are you going to give me a job gavin and pay my bills?
And you've proven the above right by jumping on another post and using against me. My, do you feel big now? Make you feel better did it?

If averyone wrote and spoke the same it would be a very boring world as far as im concerned.

Also: Simple fact, 98% of people on this site/server, will by far respect the person whom, at first blush, simply says "I know that." Instead of "i no dat."

Yes, if they need one.

Yes.

Yes.

There is more than one type of intelligence, I don't see why this is so hard to understand.

IQ tests only test your ability to solve problems to determine one type of intelligence. Again, there are multiple types of intelligence.

Depends on the person and the situation, but in a public setting, I'm generally more formal than in private.

Him giving you a job or not is the point, the point is why would you not write like an idiot on a job interview?

He used your own poor logic against you, it's not that hard since you seem to think only math skill is a sign of intelligence.

No one is saying to write and speak the same, just don't sound like an idiot when you do it and at least TRY to be coherent.

There was a study a few years back about the positioning of letters inside a word... As long as the first and last letter were in place, you could read the word no matter how jumbled it was.

So I rlealy dnot konw why polepe cnat rsie aobve tiehr bsaic lveel of eglnish and dphecier the psot on thier own... It inst taht hrad.... Istnaed of tllineg ohetr popele tyehre lzay, why dnot you put yuor bairn weher yuor muoth is, and fugrie the psot out on yuor own.

Point the finger at yourself before you point at someone else. Sure, some people could use with typing better, but unless it is in a language you dont understand, or the words dont even slightly resemble words at all, you should be smart enough to read it, and without difficulty.

One thing you fail to consider about your jumbled paragraph is that it is grammatically correct and the words are in their proper tenses and voices. Just goes to show how important grammar is to comprehension. How about you try screwing up that grammar horribly and using jumbled letters and see if you get the same results.

The problems most people have with grammar are usually issues with past and present tense, possessive, singular, and plural adjectives, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions.

When you don't quite understand the functions of these words, they can be unforgiving.

Sadly, most of you learned a brief amount of grammar in primary and advanced functions throughout high school.

I went through Montessori until the seventh grade, which isn't really a private school but more of a private program. Between the second and fourth grades, grammar was a huge subject. It covered the majority of our English curriculum, while short stories, journal entries, novel reports, and stand up presentations were in the shadow.

Between grade ten and twelve, it was quite a big joke to me. I had learned -everything- in primary school. Although I was rusty, most of what they were 'teaching' in high school was second nature to me. More or less, it was a reminder of what I had already learned. It really contributed to how well I was able to understand the literature in Macbeth, as a lot of people have a hard time comprehending what the characters are trying to convey.

By the fifth grade I was learning Greek and Latin roots. They didn't teach us ANY Greek and or Latin roots in high school. Such a sad, cruel joke.

I would try to give a break to people who constantly misspell, write run on sentences, and display the same grammatical errors time and time again. (Hi, Blazn!) By giving a break, I mean to help them instead of saying "YOU'RE WRONG, YOU'RE WRONG."

For some of us it's just hard to let go of, the smallest of errors will stand out. (Such as the comma missing after saying in the sentence above this one.)

My biggest pet peeve is the relation between their, there, and they're. Also mixing with tenses in the middle of a sentence. It was so hot today, the dog is napping in the shade. Even though there is an error, I can still analyze what the person is trying to say. It still peeves me.

Remember the good old days of translating for Blazn? Sure it was nice of you to do that for us, but I'm sure the majority of people had a slight clue of the messages he was giving.

My English is no where near perfect, I do make a lot of errors still. Er wait, is that supposed to be; Still I do make a lot of errors...I still do make a lot of errors...A lot of errors I still do make?

The language can be very challenging, it's better to help each other understand these problems instead of shunning them away. Ignoring the problem won't make things better.

People should call out issues others have with the language. However, make an effort to help them. If you're going to call them out; tell them the problem and how to fix it. When they continue making the problem, then I can see the Grammar Nazi being necessary.

Not all of you were educated like me, nor I like you. With a little common sense, we can share our experiences about the subjects our teachers thought to be important.

I'm so stoned right now.

QFT

Too many people associate spelling as being grammar.

Grammar is sentence structure, proper punctuation, use of commas, quotations, etc. and all that jazz.

Spelling is...spelling correctly.

That said, mixing letters (as someone earlier pointed out) is not the same thing as missing letters entirely, or replacing them with incorrect letters.

To the person who was asking if writing is a forum of intelligence, and brought up the IQ test, which btw... is one of the poorest measures of intelligence out there b/c it is extremely culturally biased. As others have said, your ability in your native language is definitely a measure of intelligence. anything from a diverse vocabulary, to being able to convey complex thoughts concisely through the use of complex grammar. It all has to do with how well you've mastered a skill, which reflects on your intelligence.

As for the guy who knew 3 languages, and not a math problem of some sort... What was his profession? how long had he been out of college? I used to know complex calculus, but I haven't used in it 5 years so I don't remember any of it. Does that make me stupid? Maybe... but I think it more illustrates the point that we lose the knowledge we don't need to use. One thing we never stop using is language, so ones ability in is a very reliable measure of intelligence. If a person can't properly use the language they have been surrounded by since birth, and speak/hear/read/write on a daily basis... there is something wrong with them.

And, it is entirely possible to use generally proper grammar and spelling without sounding stilted... For example, I doubt anyone will jump on a poster if they use "wanna" instead of "want to" or "won't" instead of "will not". Colloquial language still follows basic grammar rules when spoken; while it generally isn't written, it would follow that in the cases one can use colloquial language in the written form, they would follow grammar rules as well.

God are you serious?

The average high school curriculum I know of requires all Freshmen to take a writing course with some literature (so that you have something to write about). After that its primarily literature courses, unless you take AP lang, but even then we had to write at least 1 paper ever month... usually it was more like one every 2-3 weeks. Furthermore, our other classes all required essays, and the teachers would go over grammar points with us if we were doing poorly.

In college the literature classes focused a lot on writing too. However it was limited to persuasive essays rather than Journalism or creative writing. That said, persuasive essays are by far the most useful, and most applicable, type of writing you learn in school when applied to the internet.

As an example... I took a course just about Milton and we had to write at least 4 papers on Paradise lost, and 1 on Paradise regained, and our final was a paper about his poetry... Perhaps it varies a lot from school to school but... idk... I find it hard to believe your not over-exaggerating the lack of writing you were exposed to in your education.

Comprehension is beyond you isn't it? I said in my district. Freshman I wrote 1 paper on Romeo/Juliet, 1 research paper over stuff in the late 30s-mid 40s. I'm trying to remember what else I wrote freshman year. I kind of got a 45 pound bar on my head today in Gym so I can't remember. I think we did something with application for jobs. Sophomore year I wrote the most papers because it focused primarily on the different versions of speeches. I am not exaggerating either of how many papers I have wrote. If it wasn't for advancement in technology I am damn sure I would have all my papers up to 5th grade.

You want to doubt someone who has been in the same school district since Kindergarten(Yes Kindergarten is with a T it's a German word)? I know my own education has been focused on reading. You want to know why? My school district is more focused on reading and comprehension. You don't go to my school nor have you. So don't doubt what I have been apart of since I was 4. I know what I have been taught. The only time serious writing is taught is going over MLA format or when it was a speech Sophomore year. Your education doesn't apply to mine. Every state has different education standards.

I once read (the damn near longest) run-on sentence, until to the point where I was red in the face and feeling light headed. I've avoided walls of text ever since then.

My use of punctuation has fallen substantially since I graduated, but it's still second nature when I focus on it. One of my problems has been the use of the semicolon, among other punctuation issues; mainly due to the lack of using and seeing them.

Thanks for the refreshment, Nasya. XD

I had an English teacher(woman) that got pissed off at me once and called me a BITCH! Then later called and apologized that was funny, however this thread is as boring as her class. LOL

As for the OP who cares 90% of the time. But saying that I could care less about peoples spelling/leet speak/grammer as long as they say it in a manner you can understand their post and they include enough detail in it that you don't have to continue throughout the thread to ask questions like an investigator to figure out the entire story.

Then don't read the thread and don't post pointless crap in it.

Grammar is with an "a" <_<

Edit: Meh, I couldn't help myself. It is a word that is rather pertinent to the discussion after all.
