I'm sticking with Final Fantasy all the way. Never got into EQ and I don't plan on doing it either. I'll be playing FFXI for quite some time and I think it will be doing good for a long time. The fact that it had already been thriving in Japan for a few years before the NA release proves they're doing something right.

uhh... I HATED EQ when I played it, so I beleive FFXI is the better game.

But EQ has a more established reputation and following, so it has a better chance of lasting longer.

Seeing that EQ has been around since 1999, and you are asking a biased crowd, this poll is really not very informative. ;)

Well Sculli, you have to aslo consider that although Final Fantasy 11 hasn't been around for as long as EverQuest, Final Fantasy has been around a lot longer than EQ. I'd venture a guess that nearly 90-85% of the people that play FFXI have also played atleast one or more Final Fantasy rpgs.

EQ. FFXI is a great game, dont get me wrong, but Square is still undergoing their own process of learning how to better make and upkeep an MMORPG. The game is very uniform right now in terms of equipment, style, battle, and lvling areas. Granted, EQ was fairly boring like this in its early days too. FFXI also has a lot of first-time MMORPGers; most were single player rpg players on the PS2. This makes for a lot of nasty and selfish players out there, the same applied to EQOA. The game was full of n00b consolers and had no idea how a community worked.
There is an actual guild system, unlike FFXI, where very few ppl actually hold allegiance to one linkshell. In turn, raids are also weaker. Yea, there are BCNMs, but you lost the experience of holding camp with tons of guildmates, go searching for a name, killing a god or dragon, etc etc.
Also, the matter of soloing. Its insanely hard in this game and only BSTs can properly do so. Why this is, im not entirely sure. Character movement is kind of sluggish just because of the game engine, well, lack of spells and abilities as well.

and most importantly, TRAVELLING IN THIS GAME SUCKS!!!! Im a dr00d in EQ, all this running...its...its...its.... ITS BENEATH ME!!! Need more crags, or a new monument as a teleport point, and give another job the ability. Between raising and porting....a lot of whms are either too irritable or busy to help outside a town.

Yeah what's with the EQ being around forever because it's been around longer than FF?

We'll see what sticks around longer, but generally speaking, I would say the game that holds a person's interest will stick around longer.
Many people complain that FF makes things too hard and that this drives them away. FF is not for them. This is not a shallow game. There are more ways to get from point A to B than just one or two. This game holds my attention and although I feel like I have done quite a few things in the game so far, I know that I haven't scratched the surface. This keeps me interested. Releases like COP will keep things fresh and exciting as well.

FF was around when I was friggin' 10, so that's about 20 years.

Doesn't really matter since we are talking about online games.

EQ has survived a bunch of others that have since been unplugged or were once hailed as "The EQ Killer" (a.k.a. Shadowbane), yet still EQ is there, people continue to pay for the service, developers continute to develop content for EQ1, life is good.

I have found that FFXI isn't for me, it's just not want I want out of my entertainment time, I obviously have enough complaints about it that made me stop playing the game after I had tried it for a while.

To each their own, to some it's EQ, to others it's FFXI, as long as one likes the game it doesn't really matter so much what others think of it.

Since that's the road you chose to take...
Why then are you on a forum devoted to FFXI if you have found that it isn't for you? I think you even have one of the highest post counts here.

As for my comment being relevant or not, people can decide for themselves. However, I'll make one other comment.
Being relevant isn't about being online or not. The legacy of FF will carry it well into the online era as well. They are just getting started.

yeah, Sculli not to diss you or anything, but why do you continue to maintain this site if FFXI isn't for you? I do appreciate it that you do don't get me wrong or anything, but that just doesn't make sense to me.

SHHHHH, if you convince to take down these boards, we'll lose this community, don't want that do you?!?

Definately not! Look guys, just cause Sculli doesn't like the game and stopped playing isn't a reason to bash on him. Go to the flameboard for that. :D

Really though, It's great of him to keep this site up and running, that takes dedication. Obviously he doesnt keep it running because he likes FFXI. Think.. It's because he likes the people who use his board. Us.

And as Pususa said.. Do you really want to lose this community? I know I dont. Im happy to be a part of it regardless of whether Sculli plays FFXI or not.

Guys, I didn't mean to bash on Sculli at all...I'm sometimes too curious for my own good. I def. don't want this site/community to be taken down. Sculli is, as you said, a very dedicated person too keep this site up and running. He/She must really like the people of QCDN, and for that I am gratefull. :D

Sorry Sculli, didn't mean to bash on ya

Of course not.
I'd be the first to step in line to donate for the cause too.

I didn't mean to start anything either, but I just felt that it is a discussion forum, and an argument against my post was made, so I just expressed the flipside.

My tone was merely a reverberation of what I felt I had received. My post was seemingly exploited at it's weakest point and casually dismissed. I didn't feel that was exactly appropriate either.

But...
We're talking EQ and FF. Two games people are very passionate about.
I heard about the guy who killed himself because he lost his EQ character. I also heard about the people that neglected their children because of EQ. I wouldn't go that far myself, but I am sure the same things could happen or have happend with FF.

Sculli, sorry bud, nothing towards you at all, but I just felt like expressing the flipside. If I have to be concerned about having open discussions with anyone here, especially yourself, I need not be here. Lead by example is what they say...

I think you are a good guy and I am glad you invest time into providig this site for us. However, I've never been one to just go along with something for the sake of going along with something. Or hiding my feelings.

Never had a problem talking to the CEO of my company and telling hi what I think. It's not anything personal in any way.

I just saw some people's replies and concerns after I posted and I wanted to make sure things were at least smoothed out and understood. The way I see it, we all have more in common in that we share a love for gaming and role playing, than we do differences that actually mean anything at all. It's just chatter on a discussion forum.

Peace, bruddah man.
:)

I go away on business for a few days and this thread goes rampart!
Where is my ban stick ...

Just kidding ..., as to why I am on this board? Because I own it.
Why do I continue to run it? Because I feel that Quetzalcoatl benefits from it, and even if I don't personally play FFXI anymore (Java still owes me gil!!!), I feel that it would be wrong to just shut it down and leave you (as in the users of this board) with the alternatives.

For those who really want to know, it's $9.99/month to host this board, and whatever time I choose to spend on it to try and keep things in order.
I am happy with my host, I am hosting a bunch of domains with them, and I am really not interested in "I know someone who will do it for $4.99/month and unlimited bandwidth" offers.

While I don't activly play FFXI anymore, I feel that I have enough MMO and life experience to every now and then contribute something useful to the discussion, which is why I am still posting.

Hope that clears things up - and yes, I am activly playing EQ on Mithaniel Marr.

:D
