I tired EQ after playing FFXI. I heard how popular EQ was and saw the differnt jobs it had so I was curious. First thing I did after playing five minutes was quit the game. The graphics were horrible. I get sick after stareing at those kind of graphics. It was the same with me playing Doom. I have no clue why. I just start feeling sick and need to get off those kind of games.

As far as which will outlast which. I think FF XI will last a long time. Ever since FF 7 hit NA, people have became more aware of Final Fantasy games. Everquest is coming out with a sequel as you all know so things might get interesting. I might try EQ 2 if the graphics are well improved on. But I doubt it. After playing this (being my first Morg other then TSO), I really do not need to get addicted to another game of this level. So when I get tired of FFXI or Square pulls the plug then thats it for me and Online games. If I was a teenager or in my early twenties then I would be interested in trying more games.
 
yeah I think the same thing about EQ's graphics. They SUCK! My friend's used to play that game all the time and told me how cool it was...one afternoon I went to his house and took a look at it...I was like that looks awfull, but I guess the gameplay made up for it...? :? :shock: I love FFXI it's just a fun game w/ good graphics... :D
 
To some gfx are secondary, and gameplay is prmary. ;)
EQ gfx are outdated, the engine is basically from 1997, the models were updated slightly when Luclin came out, but overall speaking it is a very old gfx engine.

Sony is in the process of upgrading the EQ1 gfx engine, a major part was to require DX9 capable gfx cards at this time. Some say the new gfx engine will be released when the new expansion goes live at the end of August, who knows. For all I care it could be 2D 8bit color and I'd still play it. ;)
 
Well...

What attracted me to FFXI over, say, Everquest (or any other MMORPG) was the lack of playerkilling (Ballista doesn't count.) I've played MUDs where I can't get two steps out of the n00b area without a PK.
 
Yeah, I like that a lot as well. It in a way it forces people to be much more friendly and helpful since they can't kill you and take your money and such. Of course there are those people who are just jerkoffs no matter what. :x
 
Not all MMORPGs have PKing. Just like in Ballista where you choose to participate, you choose to PK in EQ. Certain servers are dedicated to full-blown PKing or racial/good-evil team PKing. FFXI is a great game given the fact that its Sqare's first attempt at an MMORPG, but theyve got A LOT of work to do. IMO EQ is a better game....BUT FFXI still has many a patch and expansion to go. Its too early to compare either of the games. FFXI needs more time. But if you really do want to compare them, then EQ would have to take it. Plz look up why on your own....theres are so many reasons and reasons within reasons, because EQ has much more than just endless leveling.
 
Hmm... Not sure what game your playing Pseulen. There's more to FFXI than "endless leveling". Guess your not much on questing? Not to mention doing missions, which envolve you in the story of Vanadiel and your selected nation. Oh.. and what about exploration, sure, exploration is safer when you have higher levels.. but completely doable at the lower levels, just costly.

I'm not saying EQ doesnt have those too, but ugh.. its such a horrible looking game. Granted gameplay is an important factor to a game, but so are the visuals. EQ's visuals are horribly outdated. No matter how good the gameplay of a game might be, if I cant stand looking at it how the heck am I suppose to enjoy those aspects? EQ is pretty much at the end of its ropes IMO, which is why they feel the need to make a much prettier sequal to keep up with the other mmo's that already not only play well, but look good too.

FFXI wins in my book as its still evolving and IMO can only get better.
 
i dont count questing because its a part of EVERY mmorpg. What i meant was tradeskilling, raids, zone exploration.....FFXI has tradeskills, yes...but eq was a lot different. Tradeskills in EQ serve more purposes than just armor and items...many times its part of questing (8th prayer shawl, anyone?). Armor customization, which involved trades took diverity to a whole new level when ppl with the same gear could look completely different. Raids are hindered in FFXI not only due to a lack of an actual guild tool, but many of them are BCNMs that only allow a certain amount of players. Raiding with some 40 other ppl is a lot different from lvling with 5. Zone exploration....hmmm....vanadiel has some pretty scenery, but like u said, without higher lvls, its costly. I beg to differ about it being extremely doable.....i dont think u can wonder around Ifrit's Cauldron getting a feel for the zone and looking up the sites. Exploration shouldnt be restricted to lower lvls.
Now regarding me...i actually really like questing...IF the story behind it is good....face it, some quests are just flat-out lame. But i do enjoy them, and Im currently rank 4...thats gotta count for something. I really love the rank quests...although completing them is extremely hard im finding. Im not downing FFXI, if thats what it looks like. Im just more of an EQ fan right now, even tho i dont play it as much as i do FFXI. Im prolly one of the bigger Square fanboys out there, and i wouldnt knock any of their games....well...except maybe FFX-2 or The Bouncer.....which actually broke my heart more than anything else. Im kind of responding more to this poll. So biased....im thinking Sculli is the other person who voted EQ because hes one of the few that actually played it and knows what Im talking about. As of right now, EQ takes FFXI...but thats not saying FFXI cant catch up and surpass....EQ has 4 years on FF, give it time, then ill rethink what Im saying.
Now the graphics issue....*sighs*....plz plz plz dont say the old graphics engine bugs u....cuz that just destroys ur credibility with me. Your basically telling me you'll downplay games like FFVII, Illusion of Gaia, BOF1, or any of these other games because the visuals wont make u fall over, convulsing. EQs graphics are not horribly outdated....sure, they arent new either, but theyre fine. The outdated system, imo, is actually preferable because the control response times are faster than FFXI. Losing the ability to solo because character movement is slower due to smoother animations with more frames (and the plain lack of soloability in the game) kills me. Dunno....this was a horrible poll given the site it was posted in, im merely trying to bring to light the great game that EQ really is.
