So i come home today after volunteering all day at a day camp for kids in wheelchairs (was alotta fun, but thats another story) to find out my dad did "electrical work" and shut down the power in our house, while my comp was on.

That's what i think caused it, anyways. the Power button on my computer got lolbroken, wouldnt turn on my comp ; ;. So i take my comp into best buy, where my family got a warranty on it when they bought it for me. The techies there looked at it. and after like a minute said it was a bad power supply.

No biggy they said. could fix it in like 5 min. just had to replace something. So i ask how much it will be. 50-100$ they say. Im like meh... could be worse i guess. But. my mom says that:

'HAY WE HAV WARRANTY LOL. I DUN WANNA PAY'

So they simply say that for the warranty, and for us not to pay. they have to "send it out" to get w/e it is replaced.

I'll get my comp back in 1-3weeks for a job that coulda taken less time for me to run to the videogame section and pick up Dirge of Ceberus.

Fuck you BestBuy. Now im stuck on my Pop-up infested, soundless family computer probably until School starts again.

I remember when ToAU was comming out, I went to Best Buy, and they said the release wasn't for another 2 months, and that no store would be able to sell it until then, and no one would have it. I was like WTF? After I got my copy from another game store, I wanted to go smack the guy in the face with it. But I've always had problems with Best buy, false advertising and bad customer service, but that could just be because the one in my area sucks.

Nah, it isn't just you. Best Buy sucks hardcore. At least in my area also. I refuse to shop there. The times I've gone in there, I've gone in for merchandise they have advertised on sale in Sunday's paper on that Sunday or Monday only to have them tell me they don't have any in stock or that they don't know when they'll be getting any. And no, I don't mean once in a while this happens. I mean it happens every time with this place. I've had that experience with a DVD player they advertised (went in and the guy tells me "the warehouse only sent us three and there's a big demand so we're not taking rain checks") to smaller things like DVD releases and the like. Not to mention forget asking to speak to a manager. Just as unhelpful and oblivious as the rest of their employees. It's been years since I've shopped there. I won't even go in. Why bother when you can spend your money someplace that actually has what they advertise and knows something about what they're selling? Circuit City and EB Games ftw!

More importantly, why are you buying prebuilt machines?

QFTT.

My god dude prebuilt machines (barring laptops for lack of options) is like shooting yourself in the god damn leg.

Regardless, replacing a faulty power supply would probaly be fitted in the category of things that are just not worth the effort of the warranty if you have to send it away. 50-60 bucks compared to PC being gone for weeks... Not worth it IMO.

lol the same thing happened to me with ToAU. The guy was trying to tell me it wouldn't be out for a month, and sure enough, I found it ten min later at GameStop.

Sometimes their stupidity is beneficial, though. I was buying Gun for the ps2 and a cd and i got charged $13. The guy didn't swipe the game and somehow didn't notice. It was awesome. Its a shame Gun sucked.

they are good for a base then build ontop of them.

At least you guys actually get stuff in the US.

We hardly get crap in Brazil, as far as games go. Not to mention the hardware we do get costs an arm and a leg. Dvd players for 500+Dollars, yeah we find that fair.

Anyways Demon, i feel for ya T.T You'll have it back in no time!

Cheers

Um... stick a couple anti-adware programs on it, install firefox / adblock / noscript, and do them a favor by cleaning up the computer? >_>

not my choice. I live with my parents (am still 17 =\) and when they got the computer like 2 years ago or so. i told em to get a custom computer, but of course they dont listen to me. they wanted to buy it from a store so we could take it in to get fixed if it broke, hence the warranty

I have actually done that... installed and introduced my dad to Firefox, and downloaded Adaware for him.

He deleted them because he thinks downloaded, free stuff = viruses and other junk.

Yet he plays that free online poker stuff. Go figure.

how is the best buys fault?
um... by having an item that still under warranty have to be 'sent out' for 1-3 weeks for a job easily done in 5 minutes by a guy standing right in front of me?

And yes. i also think paying the 50-60$ is better than lsoing a comp for that long. but i got overruled. Ever hear of the Golden Rule?

He who has the gold, rules. And my moms money paid for the comp =\

See, it's easy to keep a program like Adaware or Spybot on the computer... Install it, and remove the shortcuts. If he's ignorant to the point that he thinks free = virus, he isn't gonna find it installed to C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\SIGNUP (btw, that's the most secure place on the hard drive to install things you don't want deleted... nobody goes there, ever). The only trick is removing any trace of the installation ("New program installed" popup on start menu, shortcuts and computer startup processes, etc)

I reccomend Spybot, mostly because it stays out of the way until you ask for it: http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html

Well, as horrifying as it sounds, ordering a custom PC from Dell is a pretty good option in that case, as they will warranty it as well, and you'll get a decent machine, and usually a free flat panel monitor.

If it was that easy, you should be yelling at your mom for being a cheap ass. You seem to know where to put the blame, but you aren't. Best Buy isn't a hole in the wall company that can just bend their rules whenever they want. They have rules that are set up by their leaders that translate to you paying less for your merchandise.

It gets annoying hearing people complain about not getting customer servicse, but they still want the lower price. How do you think they (any major retailer) can afford to give such saving? By paying top notch well educated people to serve you? No, by trolling the bottom of the barrel and plugging people where needed.

Most companies warranties are dealt by a third party, or a seperate division of the company. This is mainly for accting purposes. I have bought many warranties on high end stuff, and must say I've enjoyed best buy's the best. They cover normal wear and tear, plus flat out replace equip towards the end of the warranty.

The reason people buy warranties is to save money on repairs, I am sure the warranty info gives their procedures, maybe you should have read them before showing up to Best Buy throwing a fit.

I have to go with Meeze really. Best Buy is a great company, if you're talking strictly warranties.

Your PC is most likely covered by whoever made it, not best buy.

Jesus Christ! I got a crappy little DVD player for $20, not used, not on sale, just always $20.

Also, I'm sorry to hear about your father's crappy electrical skills. But, for the future, just build a new machine insted of buying a pre-built one if you have the money. Its a little bit more expensive, but, its WELL worth it.

I know there are a lot of MS haters here, but I have to say from personal experience that Defender > Spybot

at least they're replacing it...i bought an ipod form best buy not to long ago and the thing just stopped working....they didn't replace it even tho the warrently was still good for like 9 months

So what the hell did they do?

I only go to BestBuy if they have the cheapest price, but I usually do on anything higher than 100 bucks is I use the website to see which locations have the item in stock, and I follow it up with a phone call and see if they can hold the item for me at customer service to insure that the item I want will be there as humanly possible before going to the actual store. Best Buy is a great place to buy things, as long as you've done the research beforehand. Those prices are low for a reason (I know it's been stated before), the people that work there are working for peanuts. Some of them have great knowledge of the products they sell others don't. Well there's my 2 cents.
