Fallout 3

There is gonna be DLC but 360 and PC only. I don't know who to hate more M$ for throwing its money around to annoy PS3 gamers, or developers for accepting it and pissing off a good chunk of their custmers.

Really? That's bullshit. Sorry I missed that, I know it must have been mentioned earlier in the thread.

But 360 and PC onry .... sorry that's just bullshit. Don't release the friggin game .. yeah no.. PB you're right.. they're just scrounging what nickles and dimes they can from every angle. Fucktards the lot!

C'mon now, are you gonna turn this into 2008's Orange Box? The game plays fine on PS3. Actually pretty much all the bugs I've checked out were not version specific... except maybe the key jingle bug, where that damn jingling sound doesn't fucking stop.

I've just been going off of what's been posted in this thread. Quite a few PS3 players have reported freezing, whereas i haven't seen a person with a 360 say they have freezing.

At any rate, the 360 version's DLC was announced before the game even launched... it's most likely a timed DLC like everything else this gen, and probably has something to do with all the Fallout 3 ads I ever saw only having a 360 logo at the end of them.

This i can agree with. Its too hard to believe anything developers say is "exclusive" anymore. I wouldn't base it on something like ads that long ago though. They've been spouting exclusive DLC since E3. But the thing you have to think about is that Bethesda has never really been a console developer until recently. Its pretty hard to say other than they have no reason to lie, because they are a PC game developer more than anything, and have stated several times its difficult for them to develop for the PS3.

I know I mentioned my game freezes. It freezes quite often and I'm on the 360. I've heard of friends while playing online complain for the same reason.

:(

What I'm talkin about is I assume Microsoft paid for a lot of advertisement of Fallout 3, with the conditions that...

1) They'd get the DLC.. at least, first, before PS3 gets it.
2) They can slap the "Xbox Jump in" logo after and make it look like sort of an exclusive.

As opposed to them just straight buying exclusivity. I mean seriously, what are the odds that Bethseda put out ads with their own money, and don't advertise that it's for PS3 as well? I think that's how Microsoft is doing business lately. They do a lot of advertising for the game in exchange for getting some DLC bonus.

Well scratch that then. I guess bethesda just can't make console games, peroid.

Naw it's not a bad console game. I'd just say that the gun-play isn't really up to par on console controls. You have to understand that...

1) The precise aiming button kinda sucks.
2) Aiming off the hip requires a lot of double movement, in that you have to line your shot up as close as you can, and then move your character to actually get the crosshair to connect. There's no autolock, no matter how close you are to the target, it doesn't slide in that direction in the slightest. The aiming stick doesn't have a great breadth of movement, at it's slowest it doesn't go exactly slow enough. So compared to trying to score hits with like... Resistance 2, it's pretty much a crapshoot.

Which leads me to believe that this game is really played best aiming with a mouse.

I can and will on my next attempt through the game, make it all the way through without using VATS. Too bad its not an achievement;;;;;;;;

It's best played using a mouse if you're trying to play it like an FPS game. You're supposed to use VATS for the most part, that's why it's in the game.

You're comparing it to a FPS, when it's a first-person RPG.

Exactly.

I've played mostly with VATS when i can. I only use normal shooting when I run out of points for VATS, which barely happens anymore now that I have Grim Reaper's Sprint and Action Boy ;D

The normal aiming isn't that great with a mouse either.

Yea this has been answered before, but even with a mouse, aiming outside of VATS is a waste of bullets unless you are at close range. There's bullet deviation, and your skill in said weapons is affected by the guns condition and your skill with it. Get Ol' Painless if you want a 0 deviation gun, it's one of the only guns in the game that will land a shot exactly where you place it.

Also, come-on, we're all spoiled by FPS games that have unrealistic gun dynamics. Auto-lock? give me a break, aim the weapon yourself. Pop out, use VATS to make some clean shots, wait for the dumb-as-bricks AI to walk into your cross-hair and fill them with lead. Make a Dart-Gun (or a Railway Rifle, but beware the chance it can crash your game), cripple their legs, then walk up and waste them. Combat Shotgun is a godsend for tight areas, although I've been using the Burnmaster more. Muaahaha burn you Talon Mercenary fuckers.

The only things I use free-aim for are Combat Shotgun, Xuanlong Assault Rifle and heavy weapon fire. Everything else uses VATS. Unless I get spooked, which happens occasionally when my perception checks fail (which is not often), to which I react by unloading the clip of whatever weapon I'm holding while pounding the tab key to get my weapon selection screen.

And the Victory Rifle has been my godsend for precision shots, as is the Blackhawk (55 dmg for a Pistol, *and* a scope? awesome). I've made so many 20% head-shots with the Victory Rifle, but it's still great every time. There are some really hilarious moments when you crit-attack kill something. My only problem is finding .44 and .308 ammo, and the guns to repair them.

I understand it's a RPG but it's also a shooter... and intentional or not, the shooting mechanics feel flimsy. Overall still a great game, but the first time I played it, I hadn't played any shooting games for a little while. I played Resistance 2 and came back... very different feeling. I think the way they connected real time combat with RPG stats was admirable, done better than any game before it... just saying the combat mechanics could have used another coat of paint is all.

Everyone else seems to be getting the combat mechanics just fine, you seem to be the only one trying to play it as an FPS. If you play mainly using VATS, playing as you are intended to play, then the mechanics are fine. It definitely is a sub-par shooter, but that's because it's NOT a shooter.

It's not a FPS. It's Fallout, without the turn based combat(thank god,) and a first person perspective thrown in. If you don't like the combat mechanics, then you don't like Fallout. That's not a problem with a game, it just doesn't fit your tastes. Because guess what? They're the same fucking mechanics as the TRPG Fallouts. Using weapons your characters had shit skill values with in those resulted in three things wasted: Ammo, Inventory, and a shit load of Time(due to the turn based combat.)

Anyone else get the Experimental MIRV?

Its a Fatman that shoots 8 Mini nukes at once. Obviously its not for practical use. But save your game, enable god mode(includes unlimited ammo) and its fun as hell to mess around with.

Edit: Rofl, I managed to knock the Mysterious Stranger unconscious in VATS with it

Actually I'd say it's about somewhere halfway in between where you think it is and where I'd like it to be. To say that playing it like a shooter is incorrect isn't really true. You can, it's just not smooth. It has all the same mechanics as every other shooter, with accuracy and aiming grinded down. You still use the same basic skillset in combat - with positioning yourself, and certain ways to move around, keeping your gun pointed where danger might lurk for the greatest amount of time, trying to keep yourself out of your enemy's line of fire for the greatest amount of time, ext. It's just that when you fire, you need longer to aim. To say this effectively makes it completely an RPG and not at all a shooter is just not true. Rather it's a poor shooter melded into an RPG. You still need to "play it right" and pay attention to stats, equipment, ammo, ext, but in the actual fight, you're shooting them and avoiding getting shot by them.

I'd have much preferred to be able to aim well and have my bullets just go off course thanks to bad stats. TO ME, that's less frusterating. And I never, ever said I didn't like this game. I love this game, just saying what can be improved for Fallout 4.

See, the problem is that you're trying to equate it to an arcadey First Person Shooter where everybody has pinpoint accuracy or knows how to deal with recoil to limit how much it affects where your bullets are being peppered, instead of taking it as a game thats has a first person perspective, where firearms make up your weapons, yet you need to develop the know how to effectively use them.

Try playing in Third Person and see if you feel different. It's the way the game is designed to be played as far as I'm concerned. The first person perspective is for immersion and looking around. They just gave you a reticle and a weapon model so that you're not completely screwed if you need to shoot something.

Bottom line is that it isn't a FPS with RPG elements, it's a RPG with firearms and a completely optional First Person perspective. So yes, playing it as a FPS is doing it wrong. That doesn't mean you can't succeed or have fun with it though.

Thanks for the freeze and ammo tips. I don't see why she couldn't just use the ammo in the gun at that moment, but I'm over it.

Just felt like throwing this out there, but your Skills in guns on this game (Small Guns, Big Guns, Energy Weapons) does -not- at all affect your accuracy in shooting when in or out of VATS. It actually determines the amount of damage you deal with said weapons, which is kind of dumb if you ask me. It'd make more sense if it affected accuracy, but I'm not sure what Beth was thinking. Kind of makes it frustrating when you have 100(maxed out) in a skill level but your accuracy is the same as it was when when you had it at 10. (Which kind of kills the Role Playing Game aspect in a way)

Not sure why they made it this way in Fallout3, since in Fallout 1 and 2 your skill level affected your accuracy and the amount of damage you dealt (hey, kind of like in Final Fantasy XI!), but I guess it makes sense if they wanted to put the emphasis on using VATS. Cuz, I mean, the only way to actually raise your accuracy with weapons is if you take perks (Commando, Sniper, Targeted Shot), and these only raise your accuracy when using VATS.

Meh, I guess what I'm trying to say is that Fallout 3 is a very weird game when it comes to Role Playing game mechanics (Stats wise) and First Person shooter mechanics, because it seems to fall short on both aspects, but who am I kidding. The environment is great, the story is a huge improvement over Oblivion, and they generally succeeded in capturing the spirit of the original Fallouts.

It does effect your accuracy; your VATS %'s will go up a bit as you level your skill. I missed significantly less often once I maxed out my small guns skill on my first playthrough. Also, as you get your skill higher, there's less wobble in the crosshairs for scoped weapons; at 90+ skill, it's perfectly steady.
