February Contest! Submit by March 15th.

I don't know why I even bother... do what you want.

Kelyon, I find your 'high-and-mighty' remarks incredibly annoying. I think it would be best for you to step back, look at this contest, and see that I have nothing to gain or lose in doing this.

There are pictures I have seen, taken by standard 35 MM pictures, that knock the shit off of 'professional' pictures I have seen. Not cropped/lightened/contrasted/silhouetted or any of those buzzwords 'real artists' use to describe themselves. This is not an artistic contest, this is a photography contest. Take a look at any of Tristam's pictures, or pictures from Yellowstone on a cold winter evening. Take a look at pictures shot in Alaska. Those are incredible, breathtaking, and absolutely perfect without edits or artistic touches.

(EDIT: Please read Stine's post. It captures my exact meaning there.)

Thats all i want to see, because photography is not necessarily something you should want, or even need to edit. There should be some empathy to the picture itself, and the only justification I can directly offer is watching on NatGeo "Winter in Yellowstone." That is where I got this competition idea from.

I apologize for my novice mastery of photography.

Soo...which is it dude? Can we edit or not? I think we need a better definition of "edit" first.

EDIT: Can we submit more than one entry?

So photography isn't art? What the hell is it doing in the fan works section, then? Is there even a point to this contest? You've completely lost me with that statement.

Hardly think he meant photography isn't art. Now you are just splitting fucking hairs.

I believe that if one is going to speak, their meaning should be clear. If I read a statement differently than you, then it is obvious that his sentence needs some refinement. From what I gather from his statement, he either means he doesn't believe photography is a serious art, or he means he doesn't want artists to apply for this contest. Either way, I am mildly offended.

Whatever man, I'm not going to continue this argument. If it hasn't been made completely obvious what he meant then maybe it isn't the construction of the sentence, but some people around here may want to work on their reading comprehension.

I disagree, it takes talent as well to be able to take a picture w/o photocropping it.

It takes alot of talent to find that perfect picture that doesn't need the editing.

This is very true, trying to coordinate yourself at the right position to capture an image at the right time is not always easy, using other tools to enhance the experience can also help.

There are moments ingame when I try to take pictures for my gallery that are just off slightly and I just don't like because they're that much off, I sometimes use lighting when I'm in dungeons or try to catch WS animations and coordinate it to the backgrounds. I'm not saying the pics I take are as good or anywhere near it but I understand both sides and think there should be two categories.

I'd think it'd be better to make 2 sections for the photography contest

One that is unedited and the other is with any changes to enhance the experience or life inside the pic

it isnt your contest, it isn't your site, it isn't your decision to change things. You don't like the contest, then don't enter. Its real easy.

If Arc wants to do a non edited photo contest so be it. Maybe we'll do an edited photo contest later. Like Jya said, if you don't like the guidelines don't enter. Wait for a contest you like.

Would you go to an employer and tell them the position they are looking to hire doesn't fit and you want them change it because you think it's right? No. You don't fit the position, so you don't apply. :2cents:

I want to so bad make incredibly harsh comments, but no -- I will restrain myself and just stick to a defense.

What the hell? Really, seriously, go back and read my post... My meaning is clear as day with that statement. You people bitch about mods taking posts out of contexts, read the rest of my post and you'll understand what I meant by artistic.

Does the phrase 'artistic license' work better? God this is really getting so aggravatingly stupid.

---

The only thing I want submitted to this contest are pictures taken from a camera that have not been subjected to photoshop-like editing environments. The ONLY freedom I will allow is lightening a dark picture.

You are taking all the fun out of just an afternoon with the camera, what is supposed to be peace and quiet, and just snapping shots of things that speak to you.

---

If ya wanna split hairs, fine. I'll just say fuck it and move on. Not like I'm not overwhelmed with schoolwork anyways.

These are all photos done by my cousin using a DSLR and no editing, besides cropping on some...

-These obviously aren't submission, but this is my last post on the "to edit or not to edit"

This discussion is over. If you would like to enter the contest with the current guidelines please submit your piece.

Well, perhaps I am being too defensive, then. The innitial thing that bothered me was when you said you would adjust brightness yourself. If it's necessary to go in-depth on why, feel free to PM me about it. Perhaps I am just nit-picking, though.

Also, I have never said anything negative about the mods, so I hope this statement isn't directed at me. I am sorry that you are angry about me being in disagreement with you to the point where you wish to insult me. I suggest if you still feel that way, you may PM that to me as well.

So, just so we're clear, the only thing that is allowed to be editted about a picture is its exposure? I'll see if I can find something interesting to photograph, in that case, since I generally underexpose my photos so that I don't lose light information from overexposure. That's the problem with using a camera that can only shoot in jpeg. =/

I am done arguing. One final statement.
I am not saying people who do not edit pictures are no less artist than people who do. I was just expressing my personal opinion on what photography is.

back to what i was saying, Iso did you ever get that Big Black Concrete hammer for Myrrh yet? Or do i need to fed ex it to you D:
