So, I beat this today for the first time in 8 years. Wanna go back and get missed gf's and sub-quests and such, but all the citys are blocked by some shield thing. Is that permanant or can I fix it? I did a half-assed search for the answer in some guides but I don't wanna read a whole damn guide to find the answer, so I'm hoping one of you will tell me. I know you guys know...
Also, where's the Elnoyle stash I keep hearing about near Esthar? I need energy crystals...well, I need pulse ammo.

It's permanent, kinda like those fucking roots of the Iifa Tree in FFIX on disc 4 to stop you from doing sidequests that late, which GFs did you miss? If it's the drawn ones you can still draw them from the bosses in Ultimecia's Castle, but it sounds like you have a save after them.

I think you can still get Doom Train, Tonberry King and Cactuar still though via the usual methods, just gotta find the Ragnarok, go around the world to get to it.

As for fixed Elnoyle encounter inside Esthar:

Not sure if still available on disc 4 though, been forever since I've played that far.

Well son of a bitch, just another reason for me to hate this game. Well I guess since now I'm done with that game I can finally write something about how much I hated it.

I have all but the Brothers and Doomtrain. I could get both of them still, but I can't figure out that stupid puzzle in the King's Tomb and I hate fighting malboro's, just not worth it for VIII. There's a bunch of stuff I was gonna do that I can't now though. Stupid fucking game.

Oh, and I can't get into Esthar anymore and I don't remember anything about IX.

Just look up somewhere how to get brothers.

As for Marlboros. They are easy, just junction someone (squall) to be immune to all their stats, aura it up and Renzokuken away

Yeah, FFVIII really was just total ass almost all the way from start to finish. A few shining moments like Gilgamesh's appearance but other than that a total suckfest.

yuuupp... VIII was an inferior game. they fucked up on so many base mechanics. also, as for malboro hunting... the best time to do this is when you have odin. aquire 100 dead spirits (can do this quickly by refining his card) and he'll proc at an alarming rate. every other fight was an auto-win

FFVIII was fun. =P

The system wasn't as good as 7's, but the story in 8 really draws you in... I thought so at least.

Def. among my top 10 fav games of all time.

I've looked in online guides for the answer to the Brother's puzzle and all I ever see is "figure out the puzzle in the King's Tomb to get the Brother's".
And yeah I can beat Malboro's just fine I just don't feel like wasting the time on such a retarded game.

We're not saying the storyline sucked, but the magic system and how to obtain summons was just... bad.

The battle system in VIII was god awful. The story line was great, but not enough to completely override the horrible game mechanics.

If SE ever puts Junction-system in another game I will kill Japan.

just go right in the brothers stuff i believe, if its not all rights then its all lefts. Sorry its been a while

I think what I hated about it the most was the way that it seems to be against the law to keep the same party for more than 5 minutes. Fucking every few minutes they'd make me change my party when I was doing story stuff. Drives me bat shit fucking insane.
When I play an rpg I use my main party and my sub-party gets completely ignored.

The story drew you in? Damn, you guys must be easy to captivate.

Aside from having the worst single plot device in the history of storytelling (that horrific "revelation" about the orphanage) and some of the most horrid and unlikable characters in the history of console RPGs (lookin at you, squall)... it was just overall an average plot and used the stupid "Surprise! THIS is the real last boss!"-at-the-last-moment thing (similar to FFIV and FFIX but at least those two games had depth) to cap it all off.

And how bout that disc 4 where basically everything in the entire fucking game is locked out?

edit: and did I mention this is all compounded by one of the worst, most ill-conceived character building systems in cRPG history too?

While I agree with pretty much everything you said, I think the characters were one of the better qualitys of this game. I liked Squall, he's cool. Zell is kind of annoying at first, but he grew on me. And Irvine wasn't too annoying either, he said a few things that made me lol. Now I'm not saying the characters in this game were awesome, but as far as rpg characters go, they were ok. RPG's are ALWAYS made up mostly of really lame ass characters, VII - however great it was - was no exception. It's just a fact of life that most rpg characters are faggy little wimps and whiners.

Squall, cool? He was an asshole. His de facto response to just about everything thrown at him throughout the entire course of the game was "...whatever." He was completely cold to everything around him almost the entire course of the game.

I completely fail to understand why anyone thinks of him as a "badass" or "cool" in any way... he was a dumb fuck.

The same reason people find Sephiroth an awesome villian. Sorry fanboys, he sucked. Seriously, what kind of motivation is "Waaah, I don't like what people made me" for hijacking the planet after destroying it and using it as a cosmic taxi. Never the less what kind of retarded plan that was.

And if you think the orphanage device was awful, surely you agree that the same basic device used in FF7 was awful as well. YOU MEANS I WASNT AN AWESOME SOLDIER AND IT WAS ZACK WHO WAS DATING AERIS WHO I LIKE AND MY HOME TOWN WASN'T BURNED DOWN AND I DIDN'T REALLY HAVE AN EPIC SHOW DOWN AGAINST SEPHIROTH CAUSE HE RAN MY GAY ASS THROUGH BUT I GOT LUCKY AND PUSHED HIM OVER A LEDGE IN TO MAKO AND TIFA DOESN'T REMEMBER THE WAY IT HAPPENED TOO?!

Any plot device regarding memory alteration/loss as an epic character development point is pretty shitty.

Squall didn't want to deal with people. And after you run into dumbfucks like Zell, I can totally respect that:biggrin:

Seriously though, He wasn't an asshole. He just didn't want to get involved with other people and their problems. What made Squall a great character for me was that deep down, he was just very insecure. You don't often see a real life weakness in video game main characters. The story line (i'm thinking the love angle and not the retarded sorceress one) for me was how he overcame his weakness with the help of someone he loved.

I <3 it.

If you didn't, thats cool. Just quit trying to force your opinions on others. That goes to you as well Skaw =P

Finally someone with the same viewpoint as me. Sephiroth is a mama's boy who fails to destroy the world.

And I still believe that in FFVIII, the final boss wasn't someone they threw in last minute. My theory that Tyrath might still remember from a long time ago is that Ultimecia is Rinoa. It fits in so many ways, with her summoning Griever, the symbol on Squall's ring. Also, I believe the compression of time is just to see Squall again. That along with other things Ultimecia says just makes me believe she is Sorceress Rinoa from the future.

FFVIII is one of my favorite FF games, all except for the whole "GF stole my brain" shit. That was a bit lame...
