I know there have been a few threads on various message boards about this, but I couldn't remember if any were on QCDN, and I didn't find any solutions. I was wondering if anyone had a link to a solution to fix the lag. It's pretty hard to believe that a brand new computer, with an athlon 64 x2 6000 processor with 3 gigs of ram can't handle a five year old game. I know I've read horror stories about Vista, but all new computers seem to come with it - I am trying to avoid downgrading, but I may if that's what it comes down to.

Also, I have a Logitech G15 keyboard. It installed on the computer and works fine in every application EXCEPT ffxi. Of course, that's the only reason I spent the hundred dollars on the keyboard. On XP it works like a charm. I've searched message boards and Logitech for a solution and have yet to find one to this either.

Any help would be EXTREMELY appreciated.

Vista issues are entirely hard to solve. Virtually everyone who plays on PCs either just use XP or have a dual boot with XP so they can play on it and do other things on Vista.

I have a G15 as well, and you are correct in saying that it does NOTHING for FFXI, at least not without windower. The G keys don't really have a feature for FFXI naturally and the LCD has no display either. Both are due to the game coming out years before the keyboard and there being not enough reason to anything about it. The folks over at www.windower.net have made a nice little plug in for the windower called a g15 binder. It allows you to bind windower macros or other ffxi related functions to the G keys. So far I've found it to be a godsend as my macros are now single touch instead of a control/alt key and I can change pallets just by loading a different script.

Are you running in compatability mode? I run FFXI on my laptop with Vista and only 2 gigs of ram pretty easily.

What kind of Graphic card do you have? I know my game is laggy as heck ;/

my new PC + Vista lags out too >.>;

I had the same problem
these drivers worked for me

ftp://download.nvidia.com/downloads/nZone/drivers/

if you have 32bit use the 32bit one..if you have 64...well you know :P

If you don't trust the ftp..then just do a search on the Nvidia site for them
they are international Beta drivers v 169.17

I hope it helps you too ^^

as always...scan ANY file you download with a virus scanner, while I had no problem with this file, I still encourage you to scan.

It seems to work alright for me. Try setting compatibility to XP in the preferences and assuming you run on windower, it may help to right click and "Run as Administrator" when you open the program as well. I honestly, am not sure what it does but to get it to work when I first installed windower I had to do this and it made it work better for some reason...
Also, sadly to run vista well on any machine you need a decently hefty video card and preferably 2GB of Ram. I run on 1GB at the moment on my laptop and it is pushing it pretty hard (upwards of 100% CPU usage with other programs running). Of course there's the obligatory "close down all other programs" to help out. I find closing things like the interactive sidebar and reducing the number of things like AIM/MSN/whatever that's running at the time will help take the load off your machine. All in all, that's probably all you can really do before upgrading components or simply dual-booting XP to play as was noted above. Good luck with your lag, and if I think of anything else I did to reduce the lag, I'll post it.

i also have just bought a new computer and it comes with Vista. I've been hearing people talk about problems that they face with vista and running FFXI. If I get vista off and buy XP and install it on the computer will that work or do i have to get something else? Is it hard to get vista off? thx to whoever responds to this.

srry to derail but i just had to ask while you were talking about computers and vista

Thank you everyone for posting links with driver updates and a fix for the g15 issue. May you all avoid Vista for all days.

Some of us use Vista and have no problems with it :(

Some also survive to a supposedly letal shot, to a fall from a palace or a very bad car accident...

The solution is in the title.. and many told it...

Vista {thanks for the offer but i have to pass}

I've seen too many programs "ready for Vista" not working with Vista, or you are lucky and find a PC with hardware/settings/drivers decently optimized, or you are skilled to optimize them, or you are an average player, and have to wait one of these 3:
1) MS Backstep to engeneering on Vista and release a patch for its kernel (forget it...)
2) SE reengeneer the Vista version of POLviewer and do the optimizations (not impossible but unreliable)
3) Hope in a miracle (far the easier to happen)

ideal soolution, is to buy a copy of xp and reinstall it until a solution for Vista users come out once for all.

I haven't had an issue with Vista in and of itself yet, but then again I've been holding a PC tech support job since the end of last March so I know how to avoid a lot of things people wouldn't expect and know how to set things up right.

My current notebook runs FFXI acceptably up to about 10 characters on screen but that is not just Vista but also a chip issue. GeForce 8400M GS.. pile of trash. Sigh. I have a replacement en route that has the same specs but with an 8600M GS.. from what I've read it should run noticeably better though what it reall boils down to is SE really needs to do a serious Vista update on the entire PC client before it's going to work right.

Either that or Microsoft needs to fix the way Vista runs DX9 and older versions because its pseudo-not-quite-emulation is clearly causing problems.

for the curious.. 2.2GHz Core2 Duo, 2GB RAM, 7200RPM hard drive

I was in dynamis last night using vista and my G15 keyboard, didn't notice any problems at all. My AMD athlon x2, 2 gigs of RAM and geforce 8400GT all work fine; the only settings I have turned off/down is shadows, footsteps and weather; everything else was maxed.

Ok, apparently I spoke too soon. Now, whenever I start up FFXI, the game window loads up, but it's a solid black screen and it just stops there. Even without using windower it does this, anyone have any ideas?

I also have problems with lagging and Vista. I have an Intel Core 2 4300 1.80GHz, 1gig of RAM and an ATI Radeon X1650. It's a brand new PC, bought it cheap, but surely even this could run FFXI?

I'm running FFXI on my laptop

Specs: HP Entertainment Laptop
OS: Windows Vista Home Premium dv9500
CPU: AMD Turion 64 x2 TL-58 1.9ghz (per core)
RAM: 2gb DDR2-Dual Channel
VID: nVidia GeForce Go 7150M (Approx Total Memory: 825mb)

(note: those are pulled from running dxdiag)

It runs FFXI with ease and little to no lag (save for that produced since I'm on a satellite connection). I have all game stats maxed out.

Resolution: 1440x900
Background: 1024x1024

The only things I left turned off was Bump & MIP Mapping. Simply because I don't see a huge improvement from graphics by them.

NOW I do lag when I don't have my laptop plugged in, so on Vista be sure to check your power settings, definitely while on a Laptop!

It has to do with the drivers and compatibility with you Nvidia video card. I posted a thread about this about a month ago and Tag posted the correct answer. After updating your drivers to the proper version for FFXI you will run fine.
