FFXIV 4.2 out of 10

The game in its current form is not great but I knew that from the beta. I see the potential and am hopeful but I am not overly inspired to grind at the moment. I will keep playing but this will certainly be a game I play casually until I see some of this potential come into reality.

There's potential at the moment, but I'm like you I have no inspiration to grind. Although, I think much of this is because of school work taking priority.

Cataclysm is what they were hoping to get ahead. If they waited a month or two, to finish the game, they'd be releasing too close to the expansion for WOW which wouldn't be a good thing, imo.

My opinion is that if the game wasn't close to being finished and had all these major issues, it shouldn't be released no matter what time frame they wanted to achieve. Meaning, rushing to try to beat the Cata launch is fine, but not managing and still launching is dumb. Remember, rupture or whatever the codename was has been in development for years on end. Waiting another year for a proper game shouldn't be that impossible.

It's like when your in school and need to write a long paper on whatever, and instead hand in a napkin with some notes written in crayon.

Yeah, this game is far from finished. I wonder what went on during the beta phase (although I didn't play it) since many things could easily have been changed. My thoughts are that I am almost shocked at so many things that seems to be so easy to implement aren't in the game from start. Regardless, SE dropped the ball long-term for this game to be highly successful I think. Like many others I see a big potential in game, but...why on earth not fix the easy things like have a decent user interface, be able to sort and filter your inventory etc, too many menus/clicks to get stuff done. Stole too much from Age of Conan, a very unsuccessful morpg - not a good idea. One other thing I really hate at the moment is the the damage model on gear...getting gears fixed, either way, is very laborious. I understand it can be a good idea as part of an economy though, but not working atm.
I agree it is silly to review a morpgs at this stage, but FFXIV deserves all the bad reviews it is getting. Needless to say FFXI atm is a far superior game in current state.

Even XI got significantly better reviews on launch (IGN gave it what an 8.5?).

I actually hope SE takes note in the case that XIV fails... it'd be pretty chill if they overhaul FFXI as a result to make it more modern... even if it's at the expense of the console clients.

Or just give the PC (and maybe 360) client a more robust and detailed front end while still using a watered-down client for the PS2. It'd work, in theory. It's not like the game doesn't REQUIRE having a hard drive for updates or anything like that. <_<

Not that I hope XIV fails, mind.

The FFXI we got at launch wasn't the FFXI the Japanese got at launch.
Just thought I'd put that out there. Early FFXI was a horribly broken piece of shit that didn't even have an auction house for a month.

So SE figured it worked back then it should work now? xD

Exactly my point, I could have lived with ff11 for another year tbh

FFXIV Review

I agree with some elements that it does feel unfinished and the interface and controls don't really do the game well, but I think they kinda ignored one element I did like playing this game, the fact it does allow you to do things your way. Being able to level up if you like fighting or like crafting or gathering resources is nice :D oh well. I don't play currently, but I'll prolly play if the game does get to that "finished feeling" point.
*sigh*

When will it get through those reviewers thick skulls that they shouldn't review an MMO within the first two weeks of release?

General rule is that absolutely no MMO is perfect on release, it will take time for both the release version players and the developers to get a sense of balance when it comes to post release bug fixes and content patches.

Because the first few levels are KEY to getting people to play the game and if it feels so broken and bad they'll quit? I mean, something like 80% of WoW users quit by level 10 because they get so bored with the leveling and very little to do and whatnot. That's why WoW is doing so much fixing to the leveling and questing come Cataclysm. They want to keep people interested in the game by level 10 :P

And this whole "let's forgive developers for releasing an unfinished MMO on release" crap needs to end. Screw that. Developers should have a game that'll last until the end with decent user interface and controls. I'm ok with no or maybe little end game content on release, but I'd expect that to be done within a month or two after release. Oh well.

I'm with the reviewer. I'm a huge FF fan and I'm so disappointed with the lack of content and basic functions that should be there. That's why I decided to come back at the March release and play then when more content is added and bugs are fixed. Maybe it's because Fallout is next week, black ops and donkey kong next month and then zelda to follow in the new year, but right now I just no longer have a desire to log on and play.

FFXIV is going to be great, I'm just going to wait for that greatness.

I just want everyone to comment on one thing. Does the grind of levels bug anyone? I know we're all XI players and are used to it but there's others who seem they should have quests with skill point rewards. I'd be very welcome to that.

I love grinding. Not that it couldn't be done with some quests etc, but to feel rewarding I think it is necessary to put in a fair amount of "work" to develop your char that doesn't come too easily. FFXIV already have levequests to get us started, which is actually one of the good things about this game for me.
Gamespot also gave this game 4 out of 10. Pretty much the same complaints as this review.

I may be biased because I loved FFXI so much. What I don't understand is how can a game 8-9 years old be so much better than the "next generation" of basically the same game? FFXI search, macro system, speed of UI, and so many other things were pretty much the best an MMO could offer and amazingly FFXI still is the best operating MMO on the market even after the release of its successor. Really? You can't give us a sort function or search function. It really is annoying. However, I found ways to really have fun with this game with a few of my LS mates going to Coerthas and killing shit, go Udak and Pul!. I despise crafting but love the best gear so I do it, and have been making good gil. I would prefer to hunt NMs to make money which kept my pockets full in FFXI.
I still have become addicted with the hope of the smoothness of FFXI not far down the road.

I'm one of those folks that goes:
"They better be adding some real content soon or they will lose another subscriber."
I like crafting and gathering in this game, I really do, but not for the sake of having something to do after I am done with my daily levequests.
Which right now is pretty much all the game has to offer me aside from a glorified chatroom.

Where are the regular quests?
Quests not related to job/class/level, just a NPC citizen sending me to the deepest part of a mine full of agroing level 100+ mobs to change a freaking lightbulb or something.
I care not for rewards, just something else to do apart from the endless grind.

Oh, and as a crafter and gatherer:
Please either increase the rate of Anime regain or make it fully reset every week.
I for one travel to multiple camps per day to hand in levequests, which include camps that are quite distant and dangerous to reach and for gathering goods only available in a specific region.

They should have just held it back and released both PC/PS3 version same day like they were originally going to, 6 months can make a big difference in development.
Hell, they could have delayed it until September next year.

This game has problems that no patch will fix. It will take a full blown expansion. The core of the game is completely messed up (UI, functions). On top of that, it's an empty world...the most empty world I've ever seen on release. SE arrogance will hurt them this time. Beta testers warned them the game was a complete mess, and they didn't listen.

Just so that you all know. I played in Japanese beta and was around during launch... FF11 was WORSE than how FF14 is now. It wasn't comparable it was worse... I remember the auto attack just completely stopping a few times leaving me without TP and an attack while the mob starts plunking me.

There was so much more worse than how 14 is running in 11, but that is my opinion.

I still enjoy chopping down the trees and talking to people :3

I agree honestly, I enjoy the game. ALTHOUGH I promised myself that if I got the game I would not compare it to ffxi at all.

I went in pretending I was there to enjoy it and honestly I couldn't enjoy the game much more than I do right now. I'm not going in with the mentality that this is SE's second chance at an MMO or anything of the sort, it is fun... and I am even playing on lindblum where it is overpopulated.

I like it, but I'm canceling my subscription for now. I'll probably hop back on when the PS3 version comes out and see how I like the changes.

its hard to not compare it to ffxi since this is its successor. however, you cant really expect this and ffxi to be in comparison at all. yes, they do need to rethink a few things. but, if they do too much revamping, it turns into an better graphical version of ffxi which would just be stupid.
as for the fact of not having an AH...i can deal with it personally. i used to play ultima online. they have exactly what ffxiv has. i do get frustrated because finding anything to buy is near impossible. so, me personally, i would love to see an AH.
all in all, i think its OK. definately nothing to rave about or to recommend to friends. however, its really how it was when ffxi came about. as for right now, it kinda bores me.
im giving this until a month or so after launch of ps3. if it doesnt re-spark my interest by then. ill probably drop it.
