FFXIwiki sells out to Wikia, tries to pocket donation money

What those people did is terrible, but I'm going to be the anti-protagonist here.

Taj is a total asshole. He hacked the paypal of a few guys on BGLS and posted a bunch of their personal information, bought a bunch of stuff, had stuff mailed to them (dildos etc) and got them in some legal trouble.

"for the lulz" if I may.

I find that sickening, how people get their kicks by ruining other peoples--who they don't even know, lives, if only in the short term.

Also take into account that he's commiting several felonies just posting this stuff, and would probably do the same thing to any of you, just for standing out.

I know this personally, I posted something to this extent on another forum where these people were quite rampant (no, not 4chan) and had police coming to my house several times a day, for about 4 or 5 days.

It's not really that horrible, but it certainly is annoying to have the police check your house over every few hours, every day.

Just because of a comment you made on the internet.

I could go on further, but this post is already a tl;dr. so cheers.
Boo hoo.
It's especially people like that who deserve anything they've got coming toward them. They kept taking donations, denying a deal with wikia which would cover all their costs and then some. They're still taking donations. They've lied about everything along the way, and cheated an entire community.

I can look past the fact that they're selling information published under a non-profit license, pretty much anyone in their right mind would, but the other stuff is downright dishonest.

Especially in a situation like this, I seriously hope to see a lot more stuff done "for the lulz". It's at least some justice, since there will be no other.

Well, that's ugly. Greed laid bare to the masses.

I can't, however, believe it really comes as a much of a surprise to anyone. Who honestly believed, once you really think about it, that FFXIwiki was being provided to anyone out of the sheer goodness of the human heart? The moment they started begging for money, or ANY website gets the bright idea to put up that Paypal button, my alarm bells start to go off. It isn't the same for the rest of you?

Being confronted with the reality of things face to face might make the coldness of it seem a bit more harsh, but ... well, I used to make my living off of providing traffic to websites, some sort of like FFXIwiki. The fact that I know just how interested any person would become in providing a luxurious financial situation for themselves is exactly why I never "donate" to places like that.

Hosting costs are high, yes, but always exaggerated, and overflow form the "donations" are almost ALWAYS going to line the webmaster's pocket. What's more, in the worst of situations (like this one), the so-called "donations" aren't really needed at all. Ads more than pay for hosting ... the disinterested webmaster(s) are only after more, more, more.

Yes, it's two-faced ... but we all really knew how it was, for any huge-ass community website. Right?

The thing that makes this PARTICULARLY bad is the fact that a sheer minimum of work went into creating FFXIwiki as a resource. It's a wiki, so 99% of the content came from other people, donating their own time, experience, and research, and taking the time to put them to words. It's rather like setting up a building to be a library, letting all the townspeople come and donate a few books each, then turning around and demanding that they pay through the nose for "library admission."

If anything should ever be about striking a financial balance, and strive only to cover its own operational costs, it's a wiki. Unfortunately, as the more cynical among us might have already guessed, that just ain't the way it is. The moment Ganiman had the option to satisfactorily "sell out," he snapped at it, and was left trying to conveniently "disappear" the "keep us afloat" money he had just gotten done begging for. Meh.

This sort of thing is more rampant than most would believe. QCDN itself, for example, once provided some sort of monetary gain to Sculli, well beyond his hosting costs. This was brought up in the past, and there were those who resisted the idea ... Sculli himself, however, wisely remained silent about the exact amount he was pulling in. Rest assured, if it wasn't significantly MORE than it costed to keep the site going, he was desperately trying to get it to that point. Any who still fights against this idea is just being naive, at this point. If you don't believe it, do some digging for some posts he's made at a semi-popular "admin community." I can only assume the same is true for Reeve now. It must be ... he doesn't give two shits about us, and some short of sugar in his bank would be the ONLY reason for him to pay any sort of attention towards keeping us up at all.

About Taj -- he's done a lot for the FFXI player base, perhaps at least as much as any other person. As has been pointed out, however, he's got a massive ego. He'll jealously send anyone he views as competition for the spotlight toppling to the Earth. He could get in huuuuge trouble for the sort of vigilante "Internet wars" he's pulling, much as it does come across as a Robin Hood vs. Greed sort of story. The community does owe him for revealing the nasty truth of this situation, surely ... but for his own sake, I wish he'd stop just short of hacking into Paypal accounts. I'd like to keep him out of jail.

Yes, Knightblade ... it would be helpful to the thread if you could change the title to something along the lines of "FFXIwiki tried to steal $9,000 in donation money." Something very descriptive, and that will garner more clicks.

"Wow, rofl" just doesn't cut it; most will skip over something titled so vaguely. It could be anything from goatse to an inane screenshot, as far as they know. It is, however, your thread, and you can do what you like with it. You've done a nice job getting the story over to QCDN. ^_^

I agree, this thread doesn't have nearly enough posts as it should be. Moar lolwiki please.

Makes you wonder how much Reeve offered Sculli for this site, I'm sure it's worth a bit of cash.

Sorry guys. I totally forgot about this thread, I was going to change it earlier today, but like I said I totally forgot, till Winklewil gave me a tell in game. (thanks, also gave me the title lol.)

Wow.... I am definetly glad that I never donated to them. Now this is some epic stuff.

FFXIWiki is down lawl

What a shame...

Taj is awesome... hes one of the guys who counterhax gms and does stuff to test SE by hacking, he even unbanned him self from the game once, hes pro :)

and sweet lord taj saved us ^^

I wonder just how puckered those founders are about now... I didn't see that they had tried to pocket the fundraiser cash.

(The real reason I post is because my taru is the same as Blackmagik's and this is right after his post... =p j/k)

I'm trying fairly hard, straining the hell outta my eyes, but i cant do it. Could someone sum up what the F happened?

Someone should tell taj that the only next logical step is for him to log onto ganiman's ffxi account and do an "/em bows to the greatness of Taj." and post the screenshot of that on the correct server and everything lol.

I'm not saying he should do anything while hes there like get him jailed or drop all of his items but just a SS to drive this to a whole new level of win.

http://ffxi.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
wiki back up but they went ahead and moved it over to its new home a bit early it appears

Taj, this apperent master hacker, hacked FFXIwikis admins gmail and such and found out the real reason and story behind FFXIwikis sellout to wikia(wikipedia). Turns out they made a BUNCH of money, like 25k cash and 180k in stock, and kept the 9k in donations from the site users for their own expense. Thus is the scandal.

i guess the 9k is bad, but >.>; if your poor like me, 25k and almost 200k(stock i guess) is a lot o.o;;

Someone needs to make a "Stay away from Wiki" in that oh so famous Chris Crocker way. And while crying, saying the FFXIwiki just want "More, more, more".

Either that or "Leave Wiki alone"

What I do is ask someone to buy a game for me. They give me the verification code that I register with in-game, then download the game through torrentspy, then wire some money to the person that bought the game for me.

Hopefully now, I'll just be able to buy a code from PlayOnline directly, then download the game and install.

And no, the first one isn't illegal since technically I own a copy, as for the second one, I'll buy the game once it reaches Sweden 2 weeks past release date ~.~ But I refuse to sit and wait through the 2-week shipping time to play it =/
