I think the disjointedness made it feel much more real. The fact that characters found themselves separated, loosely bound, or thrown together by circumstance more than design was really interesting. Also, there was a lot more you had to figure out for yourself in terms of where to go next . . . learning to trust your instincts (or which instincts to trust) was part of the fun. Kefka really was a true villain, too. Not an unloved pansy like Kuja (although I love IX); someone truly wicked.
I also thought the "job" change from V was a good one; give each character their own abilities as opposed to 25 jobs that anyone can master. Frankly, there are things I couldn't master in life, and it makes sense to me that Sabin isn't going to be out there doing mog dances after training for years to be a monk.
I also liked X. It's been accused of shifting its target to a younger audience with its teen protagonists just trying to live for themselves but caught up in things beyond their control, but the interplay between past and present is done as well as any Ibsen play.
X-2 gets blasted enough without me calling it crap. If you think Yuna should be the girl of any man's dreams, well, that's what you think, and why shouldn't you help her through her silly girlish adventures?
