'Final Fantasy should come to Xbox 360', says Sakaguchi

And the HD-DVD addon does nothing at all for playing games, just like the blu-ray player.

Except that the games are encoded onto Blu-Ray discs, thus having more storage space.

I've been in dozens of discussions about this and the most consistent conclusion drawn by most is that blu-ray's extra space is nice, but a little excessive.

And before you quote Hideo Kojima on the blu-ray's capacity, keep in mind Kojima wants uncompressed audio which is a colossal waste of space.

I think Blue Dragon is a good way to analyze how close DVDs are to outdated. If for example... 40% of each of their DVDs is the engine and world, and each 60% contains prerendered movies and plot.. then in theory you can keep a game going at that level for as long as you want, as switching a disc every 13 hours isn't bad.

However, that's a high def RPG in 2006, what about in 2008? What if the engine, world, visuals, monsters, ext that would have to be on every disc took up 80% of a DVD? Then you'd need to triple the amount of discs and a 40 hour RPG takes 9 DVDs... which isn't happening. What if you wanted a 80 hour RPG at Blue Dragon Level, 6 DVDs alright?

So the advantage to a blu-ray in terms of storage capacity is that all the things that would need to be on every disc... which is quite a bit... only needs to be stored once, cause you'll never need 2 discs.

So to be able to say clearly if Blue Ray is going to become an advantage eventually... we'd have to know how much space would need to be on every FF13 disc if it was put onto a DVD... we'd need to know how much information there is that needs to be put on individual discs and go from there.

I must say though... an often looked over feature that PS3 has is that even the cheap version has an hard drive so games can be built with a harddrive in mind and Xbox 360 games can't because you need to make every game playable for the cheapest version.

The question becomes... will there be games this gen that DVDs couldn't support? Games that a console with no hard drive cannot support? In early 2007 do you want to say definetly with DVD space limitations there will be no problems for developers that will cause them to scale down their games? Remove content? Tone down visuals? Tone down quality? Shrink worlds? Simplify engine mechanics as opposed to developers working with a HD and blu-ray in mind?

Considering MSG4 already, I doubt that. Sure he could compress the game without too much quality loss, but uncompressed he's hitting a wall with blu-ray capability. Likely there will be some compression already to fit there. Maybe it could even be compressed further, but I am doubting it could be a multiple disc game considering it doesn't even use pre-rendered movies... so its actual gameplay is what's filling the disc up.

Even if you could somehow barely force it on a DVD, what if FF13 is even bigger? What if White Knight Story is bigger? What if littlebigplanet has thousands of objects you need instant access to that all take up a lot of space with their HD resolution? Would that fit on a DVD? Would people be willing to switch discs constantly depending on which objects they wanted to add?

I can't really say Blu-ray is for sure needed... but defintly believe it's an advantage for storage space needs that are already starting to show their teeth on the DVD medium.

mass effect will have to show how much 360s dvds can hold. looks great, sounds very long. we will see, these fights only time can tell.

No, you aren't getting it. Kojima wants uncompressed audio - that's why he complains about the size of BRD not being large enough.

Uncompressed audio is a COLOSSAL waste of space. Even lossless compression algorithms can shave off more than half the space used with no quality lost whatsoever, yet Kojima still wants uncompressed. That's what's padding out the MGS4 bluray, NOT game data.

Also, relating to your Blue Dragon example, we really ought to be moving away from prerendered video at this point. Prerendered video at lower resolutions required the move from cartridge to optical disc (though with clever enough compression, anything's possible - see also RE2 N64, which retained ALL video from the PS1 version), at higher resolutions it's going to waste a LOT of space on the disc when realtime scripted videos can look just as good (see also MGS2, MGS3). I'd rather not see another FF8 where 60% of the game is frigging FMV.

Honestly, I've always enjoyed those prerendered videos like in FF10 and Kingdom Hearts. Of course is they can get PS3 gameplay to look like PS2 prerenders there's nothing to complain about since it's basically photorealism(in its own artistic style). Yet again, if you make the engine more complex and focus less on pre-renders, you can't split the discs anymore because all the data needs to be on every disc.

First off, just because someone likes Grand Theft Auto, doesn't mean they give a shit about, or ever heard about Crackdown. Second off, not everyone wants to play Crackdown... just like not everyone wants to play Godfather, Payback, The Getaway, Mafia, The Simpsons Hit and Run(more interesting to me than Halo 3 beta... errr I mean Crackdown), True Crime, 50 cent, or Saints row.

The only GTA clone that interests me even in the slightest is Saints Row, and that's coming to PS3.

>>>NEWS FLASH<<<

GTAs are topselling video games on... THE PLAYSTATION BRAND. That doesn't mean everyone is automatically going to buy a PS3, it means SOME PEOPLE WILL... meaning... all... those... people... who... don't... spend... their... life... arguing... on... message... boards... who... don't... care... about... market... share... exclusives... foreign... launches...

A lot of people are going to just buy the PS3 and GTA4. A lot of people are going to buy Xbox 360 and GTA4 too. In the US, GTA is bigger than anything...

Seriously... Crackdown hasn't even outsold the Simpsons Hit and Run and you're calling it the successor equal to grand theft auto.

Fucking hilarious... lol.

You sir have lost complete control of how to even attempt a decent retort to my questions, speculations, and such. That leaves me thinkin' I've made my point and you got nothin'. If you care to show me otherwise, I'd suggest less pre-teen "news flash" bullshit and more talk from this education you claim to be getting.

Second off, quit arguing against your own fucked up, retarded logic.

I'll bring you to exhibit A:

"I doubt GTA4 sells a lot of them, if any. If anyone wants to go next gen specifically for this game, they'll go 360."

This is you saying that everyone buying a next gen console to play GTA4 is going to buy a Xbox 360...

Let me break this down for you, I'm sure it was a bit much.

"I doubt GTA4 sells a lot of them, if any"

That doesn't say it wont or I know it wont. It means, exactly what it says... not some fucked up, bullshitted Firestreak spinned thought (This is a flaw found in most women, you know?). If it does actually sell PS3's, I'm saying it wont sell many of them. Not even close to meaning everyone who wants GTA4 will buy a 360. I gotta give you credit though, a valiant effort it was but like I told you before, you're not pullin' this shit on me, not goin' to happen. Now, God knows I know you want to open your mouth something fierce but please, this time, get off my sack and give me something good.

I'm not sure what your point is anymore. You call Crackdown the next GTA then you sell people aren't gonna go next-gen for GTA4. The big difference I see here that I don't think you're getting is that between Resistance, Motorstorm, Elder Scrolls: Oblivian, Virtua Fighter 3, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword and then GTA 4, millions of happy PS2 owners are going to be saying to themselves, "Wow time to get a PS3!"

I don't see GTA4 having as big an affect of Xbox 360 since the traditional Xbox fans from last gen have already had an excuse to upgrade since Gears of War came out. PS3 has its brand name, its Grand Theft Auto and its promise of the good games to come, with decent enough games to be patient for them. This will have an affect on PS3 sales, especially with a hundred dollar price drop, which would double the install base in the first place.

dont include oblivion lol.. its nto making anyone buy a ps3, they probably got a 360 a year ago for it;; and VF3 is going to 360 think?

GTA4 is going to the Xbox 360 too. The point isn't that it makes someone want a PS3 over a Xbox 360. The point is it makes a person want a PS3 over a PS2, which is right now beating both 360 and PS3.

It's Virtua Fighter 5, and yes, 360 is getting it and they are also getting a version that is online capable.

i understand you fire, but i think alot of the ps2 players have allready converted to 360s and are not happy with ps3 by the looks of every single unbiased game sites forums. they are all hoping ps3 shapes up, and the games you described are simply not enough. hell i am one of those guys;; i still have ps2, last 2 games were ff12 and GoW. and i have had 360 since it came out because i was not willing to wait for sony. even further when ps3 was released i was excited.. then i saw the games... and i am not happy yet. i hope they do show some blueray storage within next year or so. also here is little thing, what do you guys think. if blueray becomes next must use disk and all games push it to limit. wont there be like 4 80 hour games then per year? instead of like it is now many many 10hour avg ones. for me i am not interested in each game being 40-80 hours lol.

No online versus for 360.

Games are getting bigger budgets, more staff and high definition. To stay on DVD they get smaller not stay the same. Hell look at Gears of War, it's a 6 hour game. Resistance may not be as good as Gears of War is but have you played through it? It's got a long single player game with next gen visuals. When a more polished 2nd gen shooter comes along, I think it'll show what Blu-ray can do that DVD can't... like Killzone.

oh please no killzone;; i just hope its not a 5/10 game again. which it can easliy be even on ps3;; dunno tho fire GeoW feels like a great movie when you play it have not had that from many games. i think the Y button has much to do with it tho, how they let you use Y to focus on whats going on. GeoW was released less then 1 year into 360 release? even if it was little after, its not possible they tapped into all the 360 can do that early lol. both ps3 and 360 have more growing in store for us.

Oh I'm sure games will continue to improve on Xbox 360, I'm just questioning the actual length of the game and propositioning that disc space had something to do with it only being a 6 hour game.

I don't really see Killzone being anything other than a must-have game when it comes out for any PS3 owner, although it probably won't shift too many units with 360 already being the shooter king. I can definitely see it being a whole shitload better than people are expecting. Halo killer? No, but I think Halo 3 is going to deliver big time and sell 6+ million copies... with a surprisingly short campain mode that people will ignore.

No online versus for 360.

When did they take it out? Last I heard, it was going to include online play.

And the first Killzone was horrible. Why play another?

The first Xbox was horrible.

Obviously not, cause people did buy it, lolz.

The length of Gears of War is no indication of the capacity of DVDs... it was meant to be part 1 of a trilogy.

Double checking some info for a sec - Gears of War takes up about 6.5GB. 2/3 of a DVD, it's definitely not pushing the limits of that format! Rofl. Nice try fire...
