'Final Fantasy should come to Xbox 360', says Sakaguchi

Where do you get that information?

The answer to that question would potentially break the rules of this forum, lol. It's a pretty blatantly obvious source though.

Resistance is 15GB, by the way.

I think the question is, where do you get yours? 80,000 NA launch PS3s, Microsoft inventing HD-DVD..

I'm guessing it's ps3://ps3.ps3.ps3, right?

I think the question is.... where's your blackbelt????

OHhhhhh I went there!!!!

Doesn't seem that obvious to me, to be honest. I guess some warez site? Anyway, 1/3 of the disc left with a 6 hour game seems kind of weak for DVD. I don't see Blu-ray being a terribly big advantage now except for RPGs and games with lots of CG but 18 months down the line when it doesn't make the PS3 cost so damn money and developers run out of space of DVDs I can see it being a huge advantage.

Yeah, there's nothing wrong with having more space to work with. It's just sad when developers with Kojima's pedigree make fucked up decisions like wanting uncompressed audio. PS3 also made a huge sacrifice to push the HUEG format into the arena, which HAS caused problems. Even you can't deny this.

There's also all sorts of ways to become more space-efficient, though, and I'd wager that Gears of War probably didn't go all-out to save as much space as it could. Its development cycle was relatively short. They probably focused a lot more on content, performance, and more importantly QA. I really don't know either way, but I doubt GoW is as compressed as it can be.

One can say the same about Resistance - there's probably potential for it to shave off a few gigs too.

And yes, it's pretty much a warez site lol.

Why wouldn't he want uncompressed audio? Why compress when you have the space?

Because uncompressed audio takes a FUCKTON of space, and you can do lossless (aka IDENTICAL QUALITY) compression and shave off a bare minimum of about half the space you're wasting.

Uncompressed audio is the most utterly retarded space waster you can possibly use.

I learn from the master!

Are you referring to me? I'm not the one flat out lying about things like launch console quantities and Microsoft making HD-DVD, and not posting links backing the source. As well as claiming the PS3 is steamrolling everything else that has ever been made in sales. Sony must give you some nice loving if you to just crap bullshit out like that on a whim. Does Ken take you out to dinner every couple of nights?

I don't see how you and Marajade can just stand there and defend Sony tooth and nail after they've continuously dumped on their customers in the last year.

I agree with firestreak that the blue-ray disc could be a huge advantage if the developers made a game so detailed and large, but that's up to the developers :P (if that's not the argument, forgive me, it seemed like people were arguing that the space is a complete waste when, I'm sure in a year or so time or even now, it won't be).

Length of a game can be overcome with multi-disk. It's a null-arguement to support blu-ray for the duration of gameplay, unless you're extremely lazy.

How have they dumped on me? My only complaint is they need to step it up with more demos from the PSN store. As a PS3 owner I'm extremely happy with the system, happy with the online reliability, the hardware reliability, the features, the blu-ray playback, and the titles, even if half of the ones I have are multiplatform, since I don't have a 360 yet.

Also happy with the backwards compatibility. I like using a harddrive instead of memory cards. I like having 1 console to play PS3 and PS2, watch DVDs and watch Blu-rays.

As for the blu-ray argument... well there's one guy who agrees with me.

"3. 50 GB games
If you ever hear someone say “Blu-Ray isn’t needed for this generation,” rest assured they don’t make games for a living. At Insomniac, we were filling up DVDs on the PS2, as were most of the developers in the industry. We compressed the level data, we compressed the mpeg movies, we compressed the audio, and it was still a struggle to get it to fit in 6 gigs. Now we’ve got 16 times as much system RAM, so the level data is 16 times bigger. And the average disc space of games only gets bigger over a console’s lifespan. As games get bigger, more advanced and more complex, they necessarily take up more space. If developers were filling up DVDs last generation, there are clearly going to be some sacrifices made to fit current generation games in the same amount of space.

Granted, some really great Xbox 360 games have squeezed onto a DVD9. Gears of War is a beautiful game and shows off the highest resolution textures of anything yet released, partly because of the Unreal Engine’s ability to stream textures. This means that you can have much higher resolution textures than you could normally fit in your 512 MB of RAM. It also means that you’re going to chew up more disc space for each level. With streamed textures, streamed geometry and streamed audio, even with compression, you can quickly approach 1 GB of data per level. That inherently limits you to a maximum of about 7 levels, and that’s without multiplayer levels or mpeg cutscenes.

Sometimes people ask us, “If Resistance takes 14 gigabytes, why doesn’t it look better than Gears?” Well, for one, Resistance didn’t support texture streaming, so we had to make choices about where we spent our high-res textures. Resistance also had 30 single-player chapters, six multiplayer maps, uncompressed audio streaming, and high-definition mpegs. That all added up to a lot of space on the disc. Starting with Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction we are supporting texture streaming, which will make the worlds look even better, and will also consume even more space on disc.

There’s no question that you can always cut more levels, compress the audio more, compress the textures more, down-res the mpeg movies, and eventually get any game to fit on a DVD. But you paid for a high-def experience, right? You want the highest resolution, best audio, most cinematic experience a developer can offer, right? That’s why Blu-Ray is important for games, and why it will become more important each year of this hardware cycle. "

A sony 2nd party developer extolling the virtues of a sony-exclusive benefit, who would've expected it?

He tells a blatant lie in that quote anyway. Gears isn't a squeeze. It's 6.5GB. DVD9 supports almost 9 gigs of data. He even mentioned his 'struggle to fit 6GB' in the 9GB format, lol.

What a lame quote.

So the blu-ray is the best because it lets the companies completely forget about efficiency and resource management, got it.

multi-disk = more production cost + more annoyance to switch discs in and out :P there are benefits to larger size disc, or should we go back to the old PS1 format discs so we can start switching between 10 discs a game! XD it isn't really a null-argument. How much exactly did it cost to create and HD-DVD disc and how much for a Blu-ray? O.o I think if you had to make 2-3 HD-DVD where as only one Blu-Ray you'd prolly save money with blu-ray.. maybe.. hmm, do correct me if I'm wrong about that though, I'm not entirely sure how much it costs to make HD-DVD and Blu-Ray X.x

Doesn't seem like he said anywhere GoW was shipped on a standard DVD. He mentioned specifically it was a DVD9 and he said each level may take up 1 gig and cited 7 levels...

Yeah, the higher production cost of 5 cents per disc, they're really going to suffer if they do that. The argument for multi-discs is for just making it on normal DVD's, not making a bunch of HD-DVD's for a single blu-ray.

It's not that annoying to swap discs out unless you have to do it often, so that's not a factor unless the game sucks anyways.

Well Final Fantasy 7 had several CDs and it's considered the best game of all time by many people. That being said, FF7 went to the Playstation in the first place for more disc space. Who the hell knows though, Final Fantasy is always pushing the limit and I really doubt you could fit the same amount of gameplay per disc of FF13 as Blue Dragon. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if White Knight Story ends up needing a 50 gig and ff13 ends up needing a triple layer.

The first Xbox was horrible.

Reasoning? I seem to remember it selling very well. Basing a systems success on a sequel to a shitty game seems like a stretch to me...

Because it didn't do well in Japan. And we all know Japan is the deciding factor for good and awful sales in the entire video game industry.
