Final Fantasy XIV

And for some reason, GameTrailers feels the need to brand FFXIV as the biggest disappointment of E3 JUST BECAUSE it's an MMO... those fuckers >_>

News flash: People who don't want their single player games to go MMO don't like when their single player games go MMO.

Seriously. If Square-Enix decided not to label their MMOs as Final Fantasy entries just to sell it, people wouldn't be so disappointed.

Lucky for them that the names of the main final fantasy series mean absolutely nothing other than the order of release.

Piggybacking a successful name with a new endeavor is an easy way to push sales for something that would otherwise fail or be luke warm. As well as alienate people who would expect something, but are presented with a very different product. Imagine being a fan of the Diablo franchise. Now imagine Diablo 3 not being announced as an Action RPG, but a puzzle platformer. You'd hate that it was called Diablo 3. Or how about had World of WarCraft been called WarCraft 4?

Had these games not been called Final Fantasy 11 or Final Fantasy 14, the amount of disappointed folks would be singificantly smaller. Even if they were just called Final Fantasy Online and Final Fantasy Online 2. Look at Crystal Chronicles games. These aren't called "Final Fantasy <Number>: Crystal Chronicles." The same with Tactics. Though there's still people disappointed with Square-Enix for not just coming up with new franchise names. When someone says "Final Fantasy," most people think single player JRPG. Not MMOs, Action RPGs, or TRPGs.

I think the reason they gave that it was not called Final Fantasy Online was because there were too many other MMO's calling themselves So&So "Online".

What I meant was that calling it 14 instead of another name isn't going to change their schedualing for other "true" Final Fantasy games. Hell it takes them like 4 years to make one of them these days anyway. There will still be a Final Fantasy 15, and it would be the same game had they called it 14. I know this isn't really your point, I get that it will disappoint many people but that's going to happen no matter what you do. I've been disappointed with a lot of things about the last 5 Final Fantasy games, they are all futuristic in some way. I'm an old school guy, I like knights, swords and villages so I can understand the disappointment they feel. I think it sucks that FF13 is set in a futuristic world, but i'm not getting quite as worked up as them.

Yeah, it's not going to ruin scheduling for the single player games. But it alienates the shit out of fans who want more single player final Fantasy games, that see "Final Fantasy 14" pop up, followed shortly after by "Online."

It's getting to the point that they literally can't not use the "Final Fantasy" name, since they know it pulls in the cash. Any old Squaresoft IP that can't be hamfisted in to the Final Fantasy Universe as a sequel has also seemingly dropped off the radar. Chrono Trigger is a dead franchise. Seiken Densetsu is on it's way out it feels like. Parasite Eve has gone belly up aside from the cell phone game. I doubt we'll see a Last Remnant 2. The only thing not being slapped with a Final Fantasy monicker and still keep on trucking are old Enix IPs that sell great as well.

Plot and Setting differences aren't even comparable to Genre differences.

I believe the 3rd Birthday is going to PSP no in addition to the cell phones. Of course it's comparable, disappointment is disappointment.

I haven't seen a single crab yet... AWESOME! Hopefully the trailer showing a group fighting multiple enemies means more group fighting during normal exp instead of pull one, kill, pull another, kill, pull and link, sleep one while killing the other, etc.

I hope there aren't any killer bunnies. lol

FFXIV new wiki is www.eorzeapedia.org. Also found this info www.rapture.gamercrisis.com.

I'll admit something here. Reading "Final Fantasy 14" is a lot more exciting and heart pumping then reading "Final Fantasy Online" or an different game name. I'll buy Final Fantasy 14 faster then I would buy Final Fantasy Online 2 and I think Square Enix realizes this. It's a problem for me because it makes me think of my favourite developers just concerned about the sales they bring rather then to stick with a little originality.

I'm hypnotized though. FFXIV is the #1 game I'm looking forward to right now sadly... maybe even more then XIII.

How would you have felt about "Final Fantasy XI-2" though?

Would've preferred it. Then I could just pretend it wasn't a number FF and didn't exist ;(

Been looking for all related news and information on the FFXIV, am pretty sure I read something related to non-npc'ing items ingame.

Anyone read this? or have I lost it and didn't know I did? lol

I'm playing this as soon as it gets released. I will complete my goal this time around, since I couldn't in this one. Which is: releasing Uroboros into the atmosphere ensuring complete global saturation.

If there's a new version of Ifrit's Cauldron in 14, I'll be sure to stop that plan.

Be sure to level Monk in case some boulders get in your way.

i've been eagerly waiting for this game. all my friends will likely be playing The Old Republic.. and i may as well.. but FFXIV is what has really gotten my attention.

Pretty weird that they'll be featuring it outside of Japan.
By "bringing" does that mean "playable"? Or will it just be the trailer we saw?
