Final Fantasy XIV

Tanaka stated that the difference between gear will be much larger in FFXIV than in FFXI. It made me think.

If our characters don't level, but our skills do instead, will that mean that certain equipment will require, say, 1200 Sword skill to equip? As I assume our HP and MP doesn't grow, it opens up a huge possibility for awesome gear unless they fuck it up...

If gear is the only way to get stat increases, it would be pure awesomeness if a body piece gives, say +3000 HP, and requires either 10000 sword skill or 7000 hand-to-hand skill to equip.

One thing that worries me though is that we'll probably see a lot of /shout spam in the main city, especially as Tanaka said there won't really be any official class names and you get to call it what you want...

Player1: Fencer looking for group for Cavern of Extreme-Death! Need a tank, healer, bla, blab and blah!
Player2: What's Fencer? What abilities you got?
Player3: You need a Tinkerer?
Player4: lol, nub, mention your skills and spells instead
Player5: STFU, stop spamming!
Imagine this x10...

It has the potential to be enormously complicated, which has up sides and down sides.

On the up side, more complicated means more room for valid individuality, unless there is the dreaded "best path". On the down side, there's the problem that's been mentioned repeatedly, namely the difficulty in gauging what a person brings to a party at a glance.

Is first person an option again? I can't stand mmorpgs without first person perspective. It doesn't feel like a real mmo without it. I can only think of those lame Korean mmos.
They said they want to keep the third-person and first-person cameras, as well as add an over-the-shoulder camera to address complaints that the character at the center of the screen was obscuring too many things.

We must get together early, and stay together and do everything together all the time to avoid this !

there r actually race classes and job classes but not a name set for ur character it will be the same u can name it as soon as u created it but theres alot of CGI 3D 4D work on the char & the gear. it looks amaizing for those who have seen it theres a tour u can take in the jp site of pol so u can watch whats this ffXIV looks like and how it will be play second link on the left of the screen :P will post the correct link later

Once all the conditions of the player's quest have been fulfilled, a Warp Point will spawn right before you. The Warp Point will transport the player back to the Aetheryte where the Guildleve began. Warping back is instantaneous and allows the player to keep on enjoying the game without having the action broken up with excessive travel time. Considering how expansive the field areas appear to be, this is quite the welcome addition.

That's pretty freaking awesome. Run out and do your shit and your done for the day.

Aye, this was one of the biggest complaints I have heard from some people, the excessive amount of travel time required unless you're a veteran player who has all or most of their warps, op warps, and teles at their disposal. This game is really starting to look damn good.

Dunno if its the wording, but...
Surnames will be introduced to help people make the transition from Final Fantasy XI to this new title: “We’re trying to find a way so people can transfer their names to FFXIV," said Tanaka. "However, for FFXI we had 32 worlds, and each character had to have a unique name in each world, so if they move to XIV there might be a conflict, so what we’re trying to introduce is surnames for the characters so people can keep their original names but add something else to it to make it more unique.”

Makes it sound like there will be either one gigantic server, or a lot less servers than in FFXI. I'm guessing its a mistranslation error or something like that, and its just an explanation of how a popular name used on 32 servers might run in to a name conflict.

I would definitely pickup FFIV if it is a sandbox MMO, but I don't see that happening, unfortunately.

Oh no! All the Sepheroth's and the Cloudxzyxxx's are gonna have to think of a surname now! :shok:

Seriously though, if someone names their character something like "Cloud Sepheroth" they should be immediately banned. Also, anyone with an X- before or after the character name should be banned as well. This is not AOL.

or Xboxlive* (Yes, I'm aware of what my gamertag name is)

Yeah, I'd rank that as simply a way of saying that two people with the same name might choose the same server.

And I can't imagine a single server working in a fantasy MMO.

Sup guys, remember this thread?
New trailer.

Seems like they're gearing people up for the beta, at least. Still projecting for end of 2009?

I doubt we'll see a beta until early 2010, and I doubt we'll see a game until late 2010 personally.

I do like the art direction that I've seen so far though. One of my problems with Aion was just how... overblown everything looked.

End of 2009 might not be unlikely. I'mma venture a guess and say that FFXIII will be shipped with a beta of FFXIV.

When they're saying the game is 50% done (at TGS), I just don't see it happening this year.
